Zara and her crew head into the mysterious cave in hopes of escaping a deadly sand storm while looking for their missing team leader Hildur. The deeper they go into the cave the stranger it gets. Everyone is on edge and Zara recalls her past, revealing that she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and her motives may not be so noble. Will they survive their trek Into The Unbeing?

Into The Unbeing Cranks up the Horror

So what started as a socio-political, science fiction tale in issue one, Into The Unbeing dives head first into a thrilling tale of horror in issue two. Every panel of this issue lends an uneasy feeling to the reader. Everything from the flesh and bone environment they find themselves within to the long and suspenseful page layouts make you feel a sense of danger and suspision.

What’s fascinating to me is that we can easily pick up on the fact that they are in a living thing, whether it be a giant humanoid or some kind of demonic monster, yet as I read along I’m fascinated by their discoveries and thought processes. Zara is on to it and we are following her POV fro the majority of this issue. The other two can fathom the idea, or are afraid too.

The Characters Help Us Live Into The Unbeing

Zac Thompson shines in his ability to tell this story through the characters eyes and experiences. It feels authentic and because of that, the reader feels the same way the characters do, I even find myself asking the same questions, even though I already have a pretty good idea of the answer.

But that’s what Zac and Hayden also do really well in this book. The micro of this situation feels clear to us and a lot of questions can be easily answered, but it’s the macro that they hide from us. What are they walking inside of? How did it get here? Little crumbs are spread throughout, like the discovery of the body of a missing explorer from the 60’s. His journal recounts a vague description of how he got here and of a terrifying creature that hunts him. It’s the best way to do horror. Make everyone afraid of what they can’t see.

Hayden Sherman’s Artwork Sets the Tone For Into The Unbeing

Hayden Sherman does a really good job of taking standard lines and settings and warping them just enough to make everything feel uncertain. The alignment of teeth, fleshy walls, bone plates, and long wispy feelers protruding from orifices create the ultimate alien territory out of biology that we are all rather familiar with. It all feels uncomfortable and gross, which makes the feeling of the story invade your senses.

Everything Points to 9/10

So much more to explore in this issue and yet, still not a lot of answers. I’m ok with that. I like a slow burn. In issue one we got a lot of Hildur’s backstory and POV and in this issue it was all about Zara. I’m wondering if Selba and Abby will get this treatment in the coming issues. The artwork in this book is a horror fans dream and the character development is top notch. I’m eagerly anticipating issue three!
