This issue kicks off with a flashback to the brothers bonding over a video game. The talk swiftly changes to concerns about their “dad” (Vic McMax)’s health. Later time-jumps to the present. Ken is taping his hands up before heading to his arcade. Ken has set up shop in The Row. Things seem to be a normal day, but not for long. A group of individuals arrive and make their presence known. Pressure is mounting that a takeover is looming. Can Ken survive?

Readers bare witness to how “business” is done in the Row. More secrets come to light as the dangers of Infinity City continue to grow. Tensions throw more fuel on the fast-paced action which will surely please fans. If that wasn’t enough, just wait for the closing act. The final image will set things on a strong start heading towards the endgame stretch.

Burnett presents Ken to the readers with a new focus of character. Much of his past has been shrouded in secret prior. With this issue, it is clear to the audience that Ken has carved his own spot in Infinity City. It is a noteworthy contrast from the other characters that have been introduced in the story thus far.

DON’T MISS EIGHT LIMBS!

Burnett keeps a solid balance of drama and action with this issue. The latter half dives heavy into the combat but doesn’t lose focus on the heart of the story. The final act gives a proper build to where things are heading down the closing stretch.

The art reflects the complexity of Ken as he navigates the challenges of The Row. The body language demonstrates Ken’s reluctance to fight back without unveiling the true reason. The actions resolves that issue with bold panels showing why Ken stands out as an important figure.

Fans of this series have become accustomed to the fantastic action and there’s no letdown here. Before closing up shop, the team puts together an impactful parting act with a last visual to have readers talking with excitement until next issue.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

A key character gets the spotlight as the battle of Infinity City continues on. BURNETT, Baiamonte and Antonellini bring the emotional weight to the frenetic fighting for another knockout issue. Don’t miss picking up this series on New Comic Book Day!

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by IMAGE COMICS

Creative: Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a one-shot special spinning out of a fantastic series from Image Comics. Knowing the creative team behind the book, it has been no doubt why this story has been such a hit.

However, For this issue, there’s a gear switch in the art duties, but trust me, the quality doesn’t suffer from a flat tire. NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design adds another element to an ever-captivating tale. Let’s not delay any longer and see where the journey takes the tale now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** See Previous Review

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (credit: image comics)

When the world fell into eternal darkness, survival became an understatement. With artificial light being the only guide, the eighteen wheeler of Valentina “Val” Riggs aka Sundog has become more vital that anyone could imagine.

When an offer of transport shows signs of hope, the journey Val (along with her adopted brother Emory, Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper) started has gone in many directions. With what’s left of the “Sundog Convoy”, the group arrives in Eos, a land of eternal sunshine. However darkness isn’t too far behind.

CHECK OUT THIS COMIC PICK!

Blacktop Bill, a dangerous follower of NOX, has tracked them downto Eos. With a gamble to possibly stop Nox, Val and Emory make a run for Argus to attempt victory. A key factor of the plan is Emory making a psychic link and allowing the darkness inside his mind. Desperate times call for desperate measures. With a link in place, the young boy faces a great challenge. The darkness won’t go without a fight as Bill counters the move.

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (credit: image comics)

This issue kicks off with Bill driving the Eighteen Wheeler directly at Emory. Being ties to a chair doesn’t help matters. Dodging the truck, Emory senses Bill inside his mind and approaching. Meanwhile, in the physical world, Val is driving as fast as she can with danger looming. This is only the beginning of a hellish nightmare that stays shrouded in cold shadows.

BATMAN! SUPERMAN!

Readers get taken along with Emory in confronting some of his deepest fears while holding Bill back. Will he be strong enough? What will Bill do if he defeats Emory? The stakes have never been higher as the journey showcases what pure evil looks like. Will they make it to Argus in time? There are defining answers as the story progresses. A thrill-ride needs to end at some point and the final panel secures the brakes until the last stop in Nocterra #16.

NOCTERRA: NEMESIS Special by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Liam Sharp and Andworld Design (credit: image comics)

Snyder takes Emory into the darkest places of his own mind with a chilling tale. The beginning reminded me a touch of the Metallica video for “Enter Sandman”. It is fitting as Blacktop Bill’s ruthlessness on this plane steals the issue. Seeing where Bill takes Emory to confront made an immediate impact. The narration of his dark vision of the world also made Bill a compelling character. Whenever Emory would think he would fight, Bill immediately tortured him back.

Through all this, the writing made Emory into a fitting challenger to Bill. Even at his lowest, Emory kept going forward. This connects with readers as to knowing how important the mission was. The final act brings a serious stop as to what the future appears to bring. All in all, another fantastic read.

DON’T MISS EIGHT LIMBS!

Sharp jumping in for art duties gelled perfectly with the story. His style of art mixed with brooding coloring and inks added to the despair of the world of endless night. From the opening with the eighteen wheeler, Sharp set the terror in motion. The use of the headlight coloring made a big statement. The visuals of Emory confronting his past also jumps off the page. It brings an emotional connection front and center for readers. This is followed by an excellent visual combining a painted feel to illustrate Bill’s attack on Emory. There are a few great one page panels that fill the closing act and really end things with a huge climax, taking the story into an unexpected path.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The grim presence of Nox’s most dangerous follower shines through in an incredible one-shot issue. The haunting fantasy battlefield of Emory’s mind comes to life through excellent writing and stunning visuals. The creative team keeps the petal to the metal with an engaging tale that is a must-have on New Comic Book Day.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are diving into a series that caught both the comics and pop culture world by storm! When Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics dropped Void Rivals onto comic readers, the hype behind a mystery surprise was big. Few knew it was going to be as big as it was!

The issue marked the debut of the Energon Universe, combining the worlds of G.I. Joe and Transformers. With a bright future ahead, many are wondering where the story goes from here. VOID RIVALS #2 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooton gives fans the answer to that question. Let’s take a closer look at where things shape up now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

When an Agorrian named Darak crashes on an unknown planet, he runs into a Zertinian named Solila. Both alien races have been fighting for years. Now stuck on a planet, the pair have to work together to survive.

As they search the planet, they stumble across a Cybertronian known as Jetfire! With more unknown secrets lurking, the pair remove their helmets. It appears there is more than meets the eye happening on this planet.

This issue kicks off with Darak preparing for his ill-fated trip. With the race for supplies heating up, Darak is feeling the pressure of the mission. After a stern talk from his father, Darak takes flight.

HAVE YOU CHECKED OUT WORLDS FINEST YET?

During his time in space, Darak encounters visions of the history of Zertinians and Agorrians. The message becomes more clear that the two races must come together to survive. Readers get a true insight to what is really behind the opposing forces.

What will the pair do next after the information is revealed? Can they co-exist now? The pair fonds themselves in a interesting position as it appears there might be light at the end of the tunnel, but at what cost? Get ready for another big surprise as the issue closes with a final image guaranteed to get fans talking!

Kirkman dives into the history behind the warring alien groups. Darak’s visions tell the bigger picture and give readers some clarity into the events unfolding. The reaction to the new information is telling with the pair. Both had their preconceived notions shattered. Kirkman weave the complexity of the pair’s newfound partnership in with the uneasiness of needed reliance. The latter half of the books plays heavier with this notion. When the next obstacle appears, Kirkman unveils it in grand fashion. There is one noticeable trend with this series: expect the unexpected.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MUSIC?

De Felici and Lopes construct many personal scenes between Darak and the people of his world. None feel greater than the ones with his father. Readers get a quick sense about their relationship and how this ties in with him on the planet. There is a gorgeous two page full panel spread of the Sacred Ring that will catch readers eyes. This leads into a full page shot of the two alien races. Little moments like this jump right off the pages. Once back to present time, the banter and body language of the pair helps orchestrate how much work has to be completed and time having been spent. This all leads into a solid closing act with a great exiting panel to conclude the story with.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Kirkman, De Felici and the team usher in another solid issue expanding on the Energon groundwork. Outstanding writing bridges with exceptional art giving readers a new favorite story to jump on board with. Don’t leave the comic shops with picking up this issue.

BATTLE CHASERS #11 – IMAGE COMICS

Creative: Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast on Nerd Initiative!

For this entry, fans came back to the world of Gaia in a big way with the overwhelming response to Battle Chasers #10 by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI.

With an instant order from Image Comics for a 2nd printing, Garrison, Red Monika, Gully , Calibretto aka Bretto & Knolan relit a fanbase waiting for the next chapter. Luckily, the wait wasn’t long this time around. Battle Chasers #11 by Madureira and Lullabi hits the local comics shops this week. Let’s see how things fare this go-around, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** SEE PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

BATTLE CHASERS #11 by by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI (Credit: Image Comics)

Whenever Red Monika is involved, trouble isn’t far behind. Now a wanted fugitive, she wakes up in Garrison’s house. Unfortunately, they were not alone. Mastreo and the Martial Paladins were in hot pursuit of the pair who have a bounty on them.

With a daring escape, the pair makes a run. However in a shocking turn, Garrison makes a stand, buying more time for Monika to escape.

This chapter wastes no time catching up with a wounded Monika. Leaving a trail of blood, she’s caught the attention of an unforeseen foe. Meanwhile Garrison begins to summon power from his weapon.

The paladins are ready to strike but Mastreo makes a final plea for him to come in. His words fall on deaf ears. Garrison is ready to fight.

Can he overcome unsurmountable odds? Will the power of the Blade be too much? Readers won’t want to blink as the action turns up! The battle is one for the ages. It never lets up on the intensity and vested interest in one of the parties as well.

When it is all said and done, readers will NOT be ready for this issues conclusion. Just when they think they know what’s going on, the final image changes everything! Get ready for another twist in an already captivating tale.

BATTLE CHASERS #11 by by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI (Credit: Image Comics)

Madureira unleashes Garrison’s fury onto readers with this chapter. The majority of the issue spotlights his noble stand against the Paladins. Readers can feel his anger as he not only fights his enemies, but wrestles with the ghosts of his past. Garrison’s background has always been the key point of his character.

Madureira takes a deeper dive with a few key emotional scenes in between the action. He interweaves this very well as nothing feels wedged in to break the action panels up. Knowing how personal the fight becomes adds another dynamic to the story. Heading into the final moments, Madureira sneaks in a solid surprise to keep fans on their toes till next time. It’s a fitting mic drop moment to close out this issue.

Lullabi’s art flourishes with each panel. The “quieter” moments with Monika build for a natural progression with her story. Lullabi presents Garrison as stoic in the face of danger. The mannerisms displayed reflect someone who’s ready to go out on their shield (or sword in this case). The action steals readers focus and never stops. The moments feel big and you can sense how every strike matters in the melee. There are some great full page panels in the closing act that can’t be missed. However, there are none greater than the final image to energize fans in the wait till next issue.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Madureira and Lullabi never waste a second in bringing the action in this can’t miss issue. Great writing and phenomenal art depict a swordsman valiantly fighting against the odds and himself. There’s no doubt this series is a must-have for all comic readers. Don’t miss out on picking up this issue!

Welcome to an all-new Nerd Initiative Bullpen segment from the mind of Matt from the Hops ‘Geek’ News Podcast where we will be reviewing the latest and greatest comics you should be adding to your pull lists!

For our very first one, we will be diving into the first issue of the all-new series coming from Boom! Studios, Power Rangers Unlimited: Hyperforce #1.

First things first if you have been sleeping on Boom! Studios do yourself a favor and fix that immediately. This studio has really found its stride this year and this latest addition into the beloved Power Rangers franchise is further proof of that.

Note: Spoilers ahead

The story kicks off in an alternate timeline having seen this iteration of Rangers shattered and broken. Their fight to save their timeline and universe failed and as such the team is no more. The Red Ranger shattered Zordon’s tube in hopes of purifying the evils that threatened not only the universe but, the morphing grid.

TMNT meets stranger things!

This is where we discover Chloe AKA our pink ranger was hit with a shocking discovery. Her father was the leader of the group known as the Alliance whose goal was to destroy the rangers and the timelines. The fallout of this revelation leads to altered and destroyed timelines and where our story picks up.

Chloe’s goal is to gain her father’s trust as she is now a working force of evil herself. The timeline may have been erased but, the Rangers are still fighting the fight regardless if they are a team.

Jack AKA our Yellow Ranger swoops in and takes Chloe after she falls for a trap set against her will and from there she begrudgingly agrees to help find the other Rangers. Leading to an epic time-traveling sequence going from the North Pole to Sir King Arthurs’s court to get the team back together.

HOPS GEEK NEWS ON YOUTUBE!

Chloe is the driving factor of this issue as she yet again betrays the team and we find our remaining heroes. After a classic morphing sequence that will have fans leaping from their seats, we learn of the true villain of this series and that the Rangers cannot fight this fight alone.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: HYPERFORCE #1 by Melissa Flores, Meghan Camarena, Federico Sabbatini, and Bryan Valenza. (Credit: Boom! Studios- Cover by Keyla Valerio)

Melissa Flores and Meghan Camarena do a wonderful job setting up light-hearted quips while weaving in the direness of the situation. Meanwhile, Sabbatini and Valenza write visual poetry of their own through the stunning colors that jolt from the page.

The blend of old-school style suits mixed with a new and fresh take on them bring distinct flavors to this story.

The team does a wonderful job of bringing readers up to speed on who our team is and the motivations behind every action from Chloe’s stunning betrayals to her relationship with Jack our “elder” Ranger. Fans of the Power Rangers will need to make this latest run a priority each month as there will be twists and turns behind every page.

FINAL THOUGHTS: 4 out of 5 Cigars

Everyone loves a good rating system and something I like to do is rate things out of 5 cigars in honor of our beloved Canadian hero Wolverine.

Power Rangers Unlimited: Hyperforce #1 by Flores and Camarena does an excellent job of inviting old fans and new fans alike into a gripping futuristic take on the Power Rangers.

The blend of writing and visuals matches together better than Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS! Make sure you hit up your LCS and have it in your box each release day!

If you enjoyed this book as much as I did find me on social media by searching Hopsgeeknews. Thanks for reading my first post in the newly formed Nerd Initiative Bullpen!

Radiant Black #25 – THE CATALYST WAR IS HERE!

RADIANT BLACK #25 – IMAGE COMICS VIA BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE

Creative Team: Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Marcelo Costa, Eduardo Ferigato, Paulo Daniel Santos, Rod Fernandes , Raul Angulo, Becca Carey, Wesley Griffith Editor and Design: Michael Busuttil

Issue 25 of Radiant Black kicks off the Catalyst War, a 6 issue arch which has been the most anticipated event since the first SUPERMASSIVE crossover back in 2022.  “Everything has been leading to this moment” writer Kyle Higgins told fans in his teaser video for this event who left the choice of who will wield the radiant for the future of this franchise in the readers’ hands coming out of issue 24. This series has constantly been taking MASSIVE swings since it started back in 2021 so let’s see how the first issue in this arch holds up.

MASSIVEVERSE 101 ON NERD INITIATIVE YOUTUBE

Spoilers ahead in case you haven’t read it yet.

Let’s start off with the amazing set of connecting covers by Marcelo Costa that we got with this first issue and all subsequent issues of this event!

Radiant Black #25 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark. Art by Marcelo Costa (Credit: Image Comics)
Radiant Black #25 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark. Art by Marcelo Costa and Paulo Daniel Santos. Colors by Rod Fernandes and Raul Angulo. Letterers by Becca Carey (Credit: Image Comics)

The futuristic artistic design and color that Marcelo has created helps show the magnitude of this event. It really hit me with Tron and Independence Day vibes where the mothership is looking to decimate Earth. Looking at the position of both Radiant Blacks leaves readers guessing if both will be able to wield the power again at the same time.

The Radiant on the right’s body language shows a bit of uncertainty and fear (Nathan), where the one on the left looks confidently ready to dive in head first without thinking twice about it (Marshall)!

Based on this it can be implied that there are 2 different people possessing the radiants at what appears to be the same time. If you haven’t picked up both covers yet I would highly recommend you do, more on this later.

MORE COMIC REVIEWS? YOU GOT IT

I really enjoyed the back story we got between Nathan and Marshall right out of the gate. Marcelo, Eduardo and Paulo did an amazing job depicting a younger Nathan and Marshall. Their art played an instrumental role in being able to easily follow the story during the time jumps throughout this issue.

Radiant Black #25 by Kyle Higgins and Joe Clark. Art by Marcelo Costa and Paulo Daniel Santos. Colors by Rod Fernandes and Raul Angulo. Letterers by Becca Carey (Credit: Image Comics)

The juxtaposition between Nathan and Marshall is really showcased in both past and present events that help us learn more about why each character behaves in the way that they do.

The frustration that Marshall feels with his impulsive behavior is directly correlated to his past. The same goes for Nathan, always wanting to do things his own way to try and get ahead seems to end up pushing him further behind and as a result his self confidence suffers.

LOOKING FOR MORE MASSIVEVERSE?

A quick trip back to existence produces some of my favorite panels of this whole issue where we learn more about the back story of the Radiants and what is on the horizon for the team.

Overall, this first issue of the new arch is paced well and does a good job setting up what feels to be an action packed event where we may see 2 sides to the same story! Make sure to pick up both covers on stands today!

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5 OUT OF 10

WGA & SAG-AFTRA Strike: What You NEED to Know

Once it was announced that SAG-AFTRA was joining the WGA in striking against studios associated with the AMPTP, there immediately became an issue with how the strike was to be supported by a group of individuals that may not have been initially considered as an issue, influencers.

New Precedence in a New Era

The last time that the WGA and SAG had officially initiated a strike together was back in the 1960’s with an outcome that awarded the unions fairer wages for the era as well as residuals on work that they participated in. This allowed that members could still garner pay for movies and television that went into syndication even many years after the chief production had finished.

Similarly, one of the main causes of this new strike is also regarding residuals and how that benefit has been threatened by the advent of streaming services that often hides analytics of streaming habits. With lack of data Studios avoid paying out a proper evaluation to the writers and actors that will often be paid very little and often nothing at all for properties that are often popular on such platforms.

Another Chief concern is the treatment of background actors. Background actors are often union members that must work in other occupations to sustain themselves while striving to participate in the industry that they love while only being paid $150-250 per day, work not being guaranteed. These people are also unable to meet the income threshold of $25,000 per year to qualify for benefits under the contract.

If lack of income, benefits, and advancement were enough, studios would seek to employ AI to scan said background actors to use at their discretion without providing any compensation. This coupled with recent use on major actors (i.e., Mark Hamill’s likeness and voice portrayed in Season 2 of Mandalorian without Hamill’s participation), AI needs to be addressed for what it’s part will be in the industry and what can be done to prevent talent from losing employment to it. The WGA has also voiced concerns with wanting assurances of content not being written or rewritten by AI.

The last complaint is the process of self-tape auditions that has become an industry within itself. Actors that would once go to a studio that was rented by casting to audition for a role, but now must film themselves and submit video to casting. Where this may sound convenient, and just another result of post-pandemic precautions, it passes the cost of casting on to the actors. It also creates an unfair dynamic, where well-funded actors have an advantage as they can pay more for higher quality footage and recording space.

You can follow the hyperlinks to view the list of grievances from both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

What do Content Creators have to do with the strike?

As of July 13th, when SAG-AFTRA announced they were joining the WGA in beginning their work stoppage, a myriad of misinformation began to be posted throughout social media.

The role of an influencer/content creator did not exist when these two unions last joined forces. Influencers have become more present in promotions of motion picture studios and have found a market promoting movies and television on social media. Many influencers are even contracted and paid to perform such functions. From receiving promotional boxes, being asked to make content on social media, or being present on the red carpets, influencers share duties that SAG members have in promotions.

It wasn’t until three days after the official SAG-AFTRA strike commenced that an FAQ for Influencers even appeared on their site…and still, many influencers fail to see their contribution to the success of failure to what the WGA and SAG are trying to do.

This Doesn’t affect me!

Influencers have been asked not to take on new contracts and not make promotional content either paid or organic, and many are choosing to ignore this request using the reasoning that they are not members of the union, or ever hope to become members of the unions, and thus strikebreaking (aka. SCAB) activity does not apply to them. There is a very present danger that this mentality holds for the future of influencer culture, that needs to be considered.

Influencers did not exist when last the WGA and SAG-AFTRA went on strike and negotiated for fairer wages.

Now, influencers may be considered a threat to union members in the industry and with future bargaining, unions may request that influencers be limited or removed from places that influencers often enjoy benefit in participating in promotions. The unions are watching, and they are observing who are allies to their cause, if they feel threatened enough, they will do what is best to protect themselves.

What should we do?

You may ask, what as an influencer should I do? There is a simple answer, follow the union’s requests and stand as an ally for their cause.

The unions are seeking fair living wages for their members, but their work also helps protect many from being taken advantage of before they consider joining. As unfair as conditions are considered, they are far better than would be if the unions had never forced the industry to the table to make progress. Influencers can align themselves with the hard-working members of the industry and show in solidarity that they are not alone. As the influencer FAQ states avoid making content for struck companies (studios) until this strike is over. This is a chance to temporarily change content direction, try new things, and be an ally to a great number of amazing talented individuals striving to make things better for everyone.

Nerd Initiative has chosen to stand with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA in solidarity by not publishing content promoting anything associated with the AMPTP until they have agreed to meet these unions and make an agreement, allowing the strike to be ended.

BATMAN SUPERMAN : WORLD’S FINEST #17 – DC COMICS

Creative: Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast on Nerd Initiative!

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest installment of a DC COMICS series that is an absolute fan-favorite amongst comic readers. Whenever “Superman” or “Batman” mentioned, the expectations are high considering their place in pop culture.

The current run of WORLD’S FINEST by MARK WAID and DAN MORA has brought a modern feel to those characters without losing their classic appeal.

World’s Finest #17 by Waid and Mora (along with Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands) caps off the latest story arc hitting the local comic shops on July 18th. Let’s see how events play out, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

What started as a murder investigation has spiraled into something more than anyone expected. Simon Stagg, longtime business rival of Bruce Wayne, is found dead. All clues pint to Rex Mason aka METAMORPHO as the lead suspect. When the World’s Finest start digging into if a hero became a murderer, they stumble into an unexpected truth. NEWMAZO, an updated version of a Justice League rogue capable of stealing powers, has been behind this event.

While targeting billionaires and controlling some of the most brilliant minds concerning robotics in the DCU, this new threat appears to be at the door of victory. The plan of a robotic revolution is underway. Being bound by electrical collars, the duo now stands before the upgraded android and his main weapon: Ultra-Morpho.

DON’T MISS EIGHT LIMBS!

With some creativity, Batman and Green Arrow defeat the enforcer, severing the collars. With a plan in place and the impersonated billionaires (including Stagg) now free, it’s time for the good guys to fight back. How will the heroes stop him with the combined might of some of the most power beings in the world?

This issue kicks off with Batman taking the attack to Newmazo, who was in disguise as Supergirl. Tying him up in a version of the Lasso Of Truth, Newmazo is ready to end the Dark Night. Those plans are faulted when Martian Manhunter and the real Supergirl crash the party. However the advantage is short lived as Newmazo acquires their strength. Batman and Doc Magnus (from Metal Men Fame) scramble for a plan.

How can you stop something that can mimic powers on a high intellect? Readers sit back and see how one final attempt is made to stop world extinction. With an event drawing in the heaviest of hitters in the DCU, the action feels box-office as an unlikely player plays a crucial role. The resolution plays to perfection and will send readers home on a high note with another fantastic story in the books.

CHECK OUT DUCK AND COVER!

Waid continues to prove why he’s one of the best writers in comics. Crafting the challenge of a villain who can match and surpass the heroes at their own game is no easy task. Seeing Batman find a solution with his detective skills is always a great joy to read. The relationship with Superman is presented with a special event feel, which after all these ears, is tough to pull off. Juggling the massive supporting cast is worked to perfection.

Being an old school DC reader, seeing the Metal men, T.O. Morrow and Metamorpho featured in a story like this is amazing. This issue and series encompasses the superhero lore without making the story feel dated. The payoffs are huge to compliment the action. The closing act ties up loose ends nicely. Pacing kept everything moving in a rising direction until the final battle. The issue is everything you want from a superhero comic: action, drama and a reminder of why superheroes are still relevant in this day and age.

Can there be a more perfect artist for this series than Dan Mora? Without question, Mora defines bringing big-scale action to the comics genre. Form the opening fight between Newmazo and Batman, Mora sets things in motion radiating of excitement. Even during the battle, Mora never lets Newmazo lose his evil smile as the action heats up.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MUSIC?

Counter-balancing that is Batman reacting to events. Leading the most powerful beings in the DCU in a losing effort, readers can connect with the dangerous fight. Seeing Batman in this state gives the feel that he can actually fail and lose.

The action never slows down as Mora architects some excellent two page spreads that are nothing but extraordinary. The final battle begins with a dramatic reveal, setting the stage for a showdown fans will be elated to see.

Closing the fight is an incredible one full page panel with a character that can be the only one to end things at this stage. The closing act gives readers some fun character moments with the expressions featured. From start to finish, the issue doesn’t disappoint.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The best superhero book at the LCS gives readers a classic finale that needs to be witnessed. Waid’s superb writing and Mora’s stunning visuals closes off the “Tomorrow” storyline in epic fashion. This series needs to be in your collection before calling it a wrap on New Comic Book Day!

While there are arguments for characters such as Tyrannus or General Ross, the first true enemy of The Hulk was The Gargoyle, a Soviet scientist named Yuri Topolov who had become mutated by working with radiation.

In their first encounter, Bruce Banner actually ends up curing The Gargoyle of his mutations via gamma rays, making this a rare instance of Bruce being the hero of the day instead of his rampaging alter ego.
