Welcome to another New Comic Book Day review from the NI Bullpen!

This is NOT your Disney version of Alice In Wonderland. Alice Never After #1 is the first issue in the sequel series for last year’s Alice Ever After series from the same creative team. Providing readers with a continuation of Dan Panosian’s twisted fantasy following a young girl dealing with trauma, mental illness and substance issues. All the while, he gives us a world that feels both familiar and new, all at the same time.

Let’s jump in and check out Alice Never After #1

London

Alice is a girl dealing with a lot of issues. Years of childhood trauma and mental illness are taking a toll, and her use of psychedelics to enter Wonderland has caused even more problems.

The story begins after the defeat of the Queen of Hearts and the banishment of the Cheshire Cat at the end of Alice Ever After

In the real world, Alice is currently under the care of her sister Edith. From the dialogue alone on the first page, we can clearly see that Alice is not doing well. She has become prone to bouts of vomiting. On top of that he mental state has deteriorated to a severe extent.

Edith and her husband discuss how Alice’s condition is possibly irreversible after what Mistress Hulda and Doctor Madsen did to her in the events of Alice Ever After. Edith, however, refuses to give up on her sister.

Wonderland

Meanwhile, Alice is enjoying a tea party in Wonderland with her friends including the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit and many others. As always, the White Rabbit is running late. Late for tea with Alice and his friends, and late for…something else.

Just as the group is beginning a philosophical debate over the morality of cheating while playing croquet, the Rabbit has to leave just as soon as he arrives. As Alice is trying to find out what is so important that he must leave so urgently, the Rabbit is gone.

Alice, having determined to discover where the Rabbit has gone, excuses herself from the tea party in order to find her friend. Instead of the White Rabbit, she runs into Caterpillar. She proceeds to have a rather…fruitless conversation with Caterpillar, who is as cryptic and unhelpful as usual.

Questionable Character

Back in the real world, Edith is on her way to another appointment for Alice. This time though, she is meeting with someone at the prison, not a doctor’s office. At the same time, Edith and Alice’s father is on his way to an appointment of his own. Neither of these appointments are with who you would expect.

Rather than consulting another psychiatrist or asylum doctor, Edith is visiting one of her sister’s abusers, Doctor Madsen. This is not to say that the person their father, Dr. Letwidge’s visit is with anyone better. He is at another prison, to meet the “queen of his heart,” and Alice’s other abuser, Mistress Hulda.

Lost In The Woods

We then shift back to Wonderland, where Alice has now become utterly lost in the forest looking for the White Rabbit. Just as she is about to give up and stay put to await a search party from the castle, Dodo appears and offers to lead her back to the tea party since he is going there himself.

While they are walking back to the castle, Dodo relays some information to Alice, that there are reports of a “shadowy figure lurking about.” The rumors are that the shadowy figure is none other than the Cheshire Cat.

Alice Is Back

Back at the castle, Alice’s friends are there to welcome her back with a gift! She is unable to open it at first though, as she begins to complain about a sudden stomach ache. Attempting to help, the Hatter offers a cupcake, which he asserts will “get to the root of the problem.”

No one at the party expected this cupcake to turn Alice into an infant! Just as she is berating the Hatter for turning her into a baby, they are ready with a “Cake Countermeasure” to transform her back to normal. Coincidentally, Alice is also now feeling much better, and is ready to open her gift. She is a bit taken aback by what she discovers inside.

The gift they have given her is a dress. Not just any dress, but the former dress of the Queen of Hearts! They have given this to her because, according to them, Alice is now the new Queen of Hearts in Wonderland.

Story Review

The writing from Panosian moves the story along at a brisk pace. There is not much time spent on world building or rehashing of former story points. We get right into the current story right from the get go.

It’s not a Disney, family friendly Alice In Wonderland story we get here. The plot covers major issues that Alice is facing in regards to dealing with her past trauma and current health and mental problems. He shows Edith as a caring and protective sister who is truly trying to help Alice, while everyone else around her has given up hope of Alcie ever recovering.

The instance of their father meeting and, potentially flirting, with one of his daughter’s abusers is another subject which I’m sure will be fleshed out in the issues to come. Edith meeting with another of Alice’s abusers in Doctor Madsen is also concerning, as we are not told why Edith is there or what is being said yet.

Shifting to when we see Alice’s other reality in Wonderland, he sets us up with a real sense of foreboding, noting the rumors of dark figures lurking about. Combine that with the possibility of the Cheshire Cat’s return, and Alice being crowned the new Queen of Hearts and we are in for a twisted exciting journey full of fantasy, mystery and terror.

Artwork Overview

The interior artwork from Panosian (London) and Segala (Wonderland and Coloring) and the lettering of Jeff Ecleberry combine to create something truly special.

While in London, everything feels grounded and even. The colors are more muted and less vibrant, showing off the Victorian era influence behind the original story. Compare that with the design of Wonderland and we see something very different.

While the general style feels the same, the colors are brighter (or darker depending on the tone in the moment) and the characters are much more whimsical in design and style. The change of color palette while Alice is lost in the forest, only adds to the feeling of unease that is slowly building throughout the issue.

Overall Score: 9 OUT OF 10 – “MUST PULL”

If you are looking for a break from the superhero genre of comic books I really can’t recommend this new series enough. It tackles some serious issues while at the same time giving a compelling, fun story for readers. I hope you all enjoyed this review of Alice Never After #1 from Boom! Studios!

STORY OVERVIEW

The 30th anniversary of Power Rangers drives on as Mistress Vile is on the search for the arch as Drakkon and Kiya have used it to transport themselves away already warning the remaining Rangers to destroy it. Her search for the arch and true power sets the stage for the upcoming series Darkest Hour, which will be a 12-month mega event in the Power Rangers universe.

A Strong Start

Power Rangers
MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGES #110- PRELUDE TO DARKNESS by Melissa Flores, Simona Di Gianfelice, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire. (CREDIT: Boom!Studios- Cover By Taurin Clarke)

The story kicks off with the remaining Rangers examining the arch that Rita is seeking in order to bring about total destruction. From the get-go, the art is stand out as Gianfelice along with Raul and Jose paints a wonderful space sequence that is blended in red and black quickly encapturing your attention.

Meanwhile, we see Mistress Vile having captured Vessel and scientist Grace Sterling, showcasing her might as she takes down Vessel. Thereby revealing that his body once belonged to Zordon before making another shocking revelation.

Green Ranger Problems

Once again the Green Ranger has fallen under Rita aka Mistress Vile’s spell, and is now revealed to be working as an agent of evil. Melissa and her team aren’t finished there with building up the 12-month event to come as our Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team is on the search for Drakkon.

Their search reveals that Lord Zed now has a Morpher and has doubled in power himself but, alas, isn’t here for a fight. The Rangers and Zed have themselves a common enemy in Mistress Vile. The story culminates with Vile’s henchmen in a battle as she herself finds her way to the arch where she sets to unleash her grand scheme.

The Set Up

A stand-out sequence in the ensuing battle is when we witness a mighty zord rise from the dust which Lord Zed is in charge of. Gianfelice does an astronomical job of making you immediately feel its power, giving him his own zord which is a mighty dragon towering over the battlefield. As the Rangers fight their way inside they find they are too late and thus sets us into the upcoming series The Darkest Hour.

Melissa and her team from the get-go provide a wonderful blend of feeling the weight of the situation through both words and art. The standout in this issue is the blends of colors used on each page as you are gripping the pages at every turn.

The team perfectly sets up the gravity of the situation taking us into one of the biggest events in Power Rangers history. Melissa Flores is at her best as she weaves the various storylines together culminating in a cliffhanger that rivals even The Empire Strikes Back.

Final Thoughts: 5/5 Cigars

This is an issue that sets up the next year in storytelling in the Power Rangers universe. It accomplishes just this and leaves the reader craving more as we are left with a cliffhanger. The art and writing blend together seamlessly which for me, leaves me with a rating of 5/5 cigars.

The Art

Firepower
Fire Power #25 by Robert Kirkman Cover art by Chris Samnee and Matt Wilson (Credit: Image Comics)

This issue opens up with an incredible splash page by Chris Samnee with eye popping colors by Matt Wilson to transport us back into the Firepower universe! The visual storytelling that is achieved between the art, colors and paneling reminds readers of how high the stakes were at the end of issue 24. Along with the emotional battle that needs to be resolved if our heroes are to be successful.

The Writing

As in all books in this series, the writing by Robert Kirkman is strategically placed in panels to achieve the maximum emotional payoffs. This complements the simplistic, yet detailed art style of Chris Samnee and jaw dropping colors by Matt Wilson to further progress the overall story.

It’s the combination of these three elements that forces the reader to take a step back and try to fill in some of the gaps to predict what happens next. This gets the reader to become fully immersed in the story.

Overall Thoughts

Overall, we learn a great deal about Wei Lun’s past as it directly affects Owen, but can the two work through their differences in order to lead the team to take down the great serpent and Master Shaw?

Do the remaining survivors of the group even have the will and firepower to stop them and prevent total destruction? These are some of the many questions we are left with as this issue concludes!

Eisner Awards 2023 – Biggest Night For Comic Book Industry

If you have never heard of the Eisner Awards, think of the Oscars, but for comic book creators. It’s arguably the biggest night for the comic book industry every year, and 2023 was no exception.

For those of you wanting to know more, let’s dive into a quick history of the Eisner Awards and how they came to be.

The History Of The Eisner Awards

© 2023 SAN DIEGO COMIC CONVENTION • All rights reserved.

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, commonly shortened to the Eisner Awards, are the premier prizes for those working in the comic book industry. Given out every year at San Diego Comic Con For a writer or artist, an Eisner represents nothing less than comic book excellence. It means you’ve made an impact on the industry.

Before the Eisner Awards, there was another award given to comic book creators, and that was the Kirby Awards. The Kirby Awards were named after comic book legend Jack Kirby (Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Eternals and SO MANY MORE), but in 1987 the awards were discontinued indefinitely.

Comic book industry professional Dave Olbrich, helped to start the Harvey Awards and the Eisner Awards the following year. The awards were named after William Erwin Eisner (The Spirit 1940 – 1952), one of the earliest cartoonists in the industry and the person mainly responsible for popularizing the term “graphic novel” with the release of his book “A Contract With God” in 1978.

Will Eisner himself would regularly participate in the award ceremony until his passing in 2005.

The 2023 Eisner Awards Winners

It was DC Comics’ year this at this Eisner Awards, with the publisher’s creators taking home 8 awards this year (not all exclusive for DC projects.) That’s not to say that other publishers didn’t have a great year as well! Let’s take a look at the biggest winners of the night!

Rogue Sun Issue 14 – Stuck in Limbo!

ROGUE SUN #14IMAGE COMICS via BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE

Creative Team: Ryan Parrott (Writer), Abel and Marco Renna (Artists), Natalia Marques (Colors), Becca Carey (Letters), Michael Busuttil (Editor and Design)

Rogue Sun #14 is the second installment of the latest arc, where Dylan is continuing to fight for control of his body, while working through issues from the past. Specifically his daddy issues. We come to realize that these daddy issues might be an inherited family trait. The Rogue Sun Family grows with a few key additions that the reader will take sides with!

The Team’s Work

Writer Ryan Parrott whimsically intertwines three storylines seamlessly, while artists Abel and Marco Renna provide two different stylistic flavors that aid in the transitions.

Let’s not forget about colorist Natalia Marques who’s use of lights and darks really showcase how vast the world is inside that little sun stone! Becca Carey’s letting provides the perfect balance and tone to help the reader connect with the story, especially during the father/son moments.

The Structure

Throughout this book I really enjoyed the mix of traditional and non traditional paneling; it really helped with the pacing and flow of the story. The traditional panels (ones with gutters) break up the art nicely and force you to slow down during the more emotional conversations and scenes. Whereas the underlays of full panels with a mix of guttered panels provides a cinematic like experience.

Rogue Sun
Rogue Sun #14 by Ryan Parrott. Art/Colors by Abel, Marco Renna d  Natalia Marques (Credit: Image Comics)

This issue is setting up what feels to be an internal civil war where both sides are recruiting the most powerful individuals in hopes to be the one in the end that controls Dylan’s physical body. In order for these recruitments to happen, promises need to be made which might end up doing more harm than good! The tension is building which leaves the reader wanting more! Another solid issue!

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by DC COMICS

Creative: Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the “fight forever” saga between one of DC Comics most historic rivalry adds a new chapter to its legacy with a new DC Black Label series! Since its’ inception in 2018, it has provided legendary stories for some of the DCU’s most legendary characters. Seeing these icons in a new spotlight is always a treat and the latest line entry is no exception considering the creative team behind it.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) give readers much to ponder as the Man Of Steel is challenged by his greatest adversary on a level he might not be ready for. Let’s not delay any longer and take a closer look at the end of an era?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with Clark Kent at his desk at the Daily Planet. Before working on his latest story, Clark has a flashback to his younger days. In this vision, Clark is outside of a burning building, screaming for someone to open the metal door. That someone is Lex Luthor.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) – Credit: DC Comics (Chris Samnee Cover)

Back in the present, The byline on the computer screen reads “The Last Days Of Lex Luthor” by Clark Kent.

From here, the story switches to Bangladesh. A ship at sea is rocked by surprising rough seas. The cause of this isn’t mother Nature. It is a high-tech ship that starts to attack the city of Meghwip. The ship starts attacking the island in an attempt to sink it. Luckily, someone has shown up to save the people.

MORE SUPERMAN COMICS?

Moving faster than a speeding bullet, Superman starts keeping people away from the danger at hand. Once the crisis had been dealt with, Superman wastes no time exposing who is behind the attack: Lex Luthor!

Where this would be a “normal” meeting between the two, this encounter couldn’t be more different. Lex reveals the attack was nothing more to get Supes’s attention! Once he had it, Lex drops a bombshell: he is dying and he needs Superman’s help!

CHECK OUT SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN!

Proving to be the smartest in the room, Lex makes him an offer he can’t refuse. How does Superman respond? Will he turn down his greatest rival’s plea for help? Can he? Readers see the beginnings of Superman’s ethics placed into question as the Man of Tomorrow is haunted by his past with an uncertain future looming. Get ready for what can only be the beginnings of a classic!

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) – Credit: DC Comics (Doc Shaner cover)

Waid crafts a conflict that proves to carry more weight than even the Man of Steel can muscle. The historic feud between Clark and Lex has stood the test of time. Seeing Lex have to swallow some pride displayed the gravity of his problems. For the man with all the answers to be left left denied was a side of Lex few have ever seen. Waid never lets his confidence be deflated during this entire issue.

POWER RANGERS!

The attack in Bangladesh is prime example of this. Lex’s willingness to destroy and endanger thousands for a meeting plays into his “Holier than thou” mystique. Attacking Clark at his core: Being the symbol of hope in hopelessness is one of the most dangerous blows. Seeing Superman rise to this challenge without breaking his ethics made for compelling drama. Tying in a backstory to their youth is a nice touch sending things into the next chapter.

Whenever Bryan Hitch is attached to a project, readers know to expect bold pieces of art to hit key points. The two page spread on Lex’s ship attack is an easy section readers will connect with. Brilliant classic full Superman Page which fueled this portion of the issue. Lex’s arrogance poured thru the panel’s with Hitch nailing the reactions during their one-one-one “talk”.

The flashback moments added another detail to the story. Seeing how Clark stands by Lex’s side even back then portrays to the readers how dedicated he is to being the symbol of hope. Hitch makes this story feel larger than the pages. With each detail on the areas illustrated, the feel readers will have in this issue is like cinema on the big screen. Solid closing panels tying some loose ends while engaging in the reasons why Lex hates Clark.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Doing a mature themed Superman story is never easy. in one debut issue, Waid, Hitch and the team lay the foundation with a captivating story filled with vibrant imagery. The endless battle takes things to another level with a can’t miss issue for New Comic Book Day!

Pocus Hocus is an indie comic book series in the horror/comedy genre. Having its origins on Kickstarter, this outstanding passion project is being published by Source Point Press for release on Oct. 25th of this year. Just in time for Halloween!

The first issue was originally released on Kickstarter back in 2021, and five issues later has become a smash hit among indie comic book fans. The series has even inspired its own spin-off run called “Horus In Hell,” but that’s another article.

At long last, this horror/comedy masterpiece will be available to the general audience just in time for spooky season this year!

What Is ‘Pocus Hocus?’

Written by Allen Dunford and Will Radford, the story follows a magician by the name of Pocus Hocus. He is on a journey to get his soul back from a demon, whom he traded it to for real life magical powers.

His motivation? What could possibly drive a man to such desperation, as to sell his soul? The approval of a father. His quest leads to shenanigans aplenty with death and terror lurking around every corner, as he journey’s into Hell to retrieve his soul. He is not alone in this quest though, along for the ride is his assistant Emily, a demonic pink rabbit named Horus, and a demon who HAD Pocus’ soul (name to be revealed in the story).

The artwork and lettering from Balondo, Smith and Lentz lend and even more magical feel to series. Encapsulating the horrific circumstances our “heroes” find themselves in while at the same time keeping things fun and light when appropriate.

With noticeable outbursts, Cutter tries recomposing herself, but to no avail. Cutter is now pushed to the brink of insanity. This doesn’t bode well for Erica as she and her companions lay low in preparation for their next move.

With the dangers mounting, can Erica survive? What of the people under her protection? What of Cutter and the duplicate? Readers get an insight to Erica’s handling of the situation before a new player enters the deadly game. Get ready for an interesting change of events as the closing moments bring more than even the great Erica Slaughter could bargain for.

WORLD’S FINEST! LET’S GO!

Nobody currently does slow burn drama quite like James Tynion. Kicking off the new arc. the pacing allows for steady builds in all the major storylines. Seeing Cutter even more unhinged is a strong point to readers as her character appears ready to obtain victory. The initial outbursts leave no doubt as to how far gone she truly is. Meanwhile, Erica tries to regroup over recent events.

With her confidence rattled, Erica comes across determined to get back on track. This is overshadowed by moments between Gabi and Riqui. Seeing the pair bond over this ordeal breaks the tension up just enough before shifts back gears. Tynion throws in an excellent new development before tying off events in this return chapter. It’s issues like this readers fully understand why this series gets so much credit and praise.

ANOTHER HIT SERIES FROM BOOM!

Dell’edera and Muerto drive home how unglued Cutter has become. Seeing the visuals of the breakdown all leads to a full page panel that fans won’t soon forget. The art team also delivers on the latest Duplicate victim’s emotional state. Watching them relive a nightmare with their testimony to the sheriff set an early feel that never escaped the issue.

It balanced out with Gabi and Riqui’s more “normal” moments as they follow Erica’s lead. The break gives readers a chance to soak in the story before the shocking close-out panels. With the latest development, there is no way to pass on becoming hooked into the latest arc.
