The crew of the Starship Godzilla has made it back to their home base in less than stellar condition. Gen, who is the ship’s owner, is not happy about the condition of her ship and needs the crew to band together to do so. Also, just a little luck on some race gambling.

Story Overview:
As the crew of the ship crash lands onto their homebase planet, Ayan greets her grandma who happens to be the owner of the ship. To say Gen is unhappy about the condition the ship is in is an understatement. Gen sends Rohan to the racetrack to place her bets to try and get money to fix the ship. While he’s placing bets Ayan and Gen sabotage some race ships to acquire parts and to help her bets come through. However, they have a way bigger problem than getting caught by the ship owners, as a king of Kaiju makes a thunderous entrance.
Writing:
Starship Godzilla #2 introduces us to Gen and the planet they call home. Chris Gooch does a good job of introducing the reader to a new character and situation. But the pace of the story and the connection to the first issue suffer a bit in this issue. The story feels like it’s a bit of a throw away until the last pages where it introduces one of the best-known Kaiju. There were better ways to get to that point, but this was the story we were given. It isn’t lost that this series is a fun and wacky one, but a little continuity would have gone a long way.
Artwork:
The art in this issue absolutely delivers and is very fun and vibrant. Oliver Ono employs a distinctive punk rock art style in this book, contributing to its unique visual appeal. The colors are vibrant and draw the readers’ eyes in. The character design and background are stunning and really give the story a boost. The cherry on top is the Kaiju design at the end of the book, which Ono gives his own flare well still keeping it recognizable.

Final Thoughts
Starship Godzilla #2 feels a little underwhelming as far as the actual story goes but is still a fun story. The humor and wackiness hit exactly how they should, well the art is the real all-star in this issue. I will be keeping my eyes on where this story is headed, but there are enough positives to stay onboard and give it time.
Overall Grade: 6/10
