The Kai-Sei Era Enters Space

The crew of Spaceship Godzilla (did I mention the ship is Mechagodzilla) is on a mission to recover some Kaiju eggs for a mysterious buyer. Through a daring heist the crew gets the precious cargo and returns to their ship. However, this is just the start of their problems as one of the eggs hatches and a baby Kaiju is loose on the ship. Can the crew find and recapture the baby Kaiju?

Sometimes the Kaiju isn’t the Scariest Thing

Starship Godzilla #1 has a unique feel and really pushes the envelope of what we can see in the Kai-Sei Era. Chris Gooch does an amazing job of bringing this unique story to life. The drama between the characters instantly endears them to you. Well, the thrill of the heist and then the hide & seek with the baby Kaiju holds your attention. But if that wasn’t enough, Gooch ends the issue with a final page that makes the reader second guess what is exactly going on.

Not to be out done the art in this issue is truly awesome. Oliver Ono brings a punk rock art style to this book, which really makes it stand out. The character designs are cool; well, the Kaiju design is very original and different. The Mechagodzilla ship design is spot on and awesome to see. It steals every panel it is in, and makes you want to see more.

Final Thoughts

Starship Godzilla #1 adds yet another awesome layer to this new Kai-Sei Era. With some familiar yet very original concepts, this book is very ambitious, and it pays off. If you are a Godzilla fan this is a must get, just like the other two series in this new shared universe. However, you don’t need to be a fan of Godzilla to enjoy this series, as the story has something for everyone. Make sure to get to your LCS and pick up your copy of issue one, as well as add this and the other 2 series in the Kai-Sei Era to your Pull List.

Overall Grade: 10/10
