Anthology You Say

The first tale in this book is Two Princes, which is about Racer X working as an Interpol Agent. He is tasked with tracking down a racer and criminal known as the Viking. With some awesome chase action, Racer X catches up to the Viking, and the main showdown is on the way. Will Racer X get his man or is the Viking just too powerful for him?

In Racer’s Day Off, Speed Racer is taking a much-needed restful day off. So, what else are Sprittle and Chim-Chim to do but steal the Mach 5 and go on some fun adventures. After racing an ice cream truck, getting revenge on a bully, and even invading a Monster Truck rally. Sprittle ends the day in a high-speed chase with the police. However, the police should be the least of Sprittle’s worries.

Fast & Furious Tales

Anthologies can be a bit tricky to pull off, but the content in this one shows the strengths of the format in this universe. Mark London does a great job of telling a story of an Agent Racer X. Mixing in espionage to the world’s greatest getaway driver adds a nice layer. Meanwhile, David Pepose tells a completely fun story highlighting Sprittle & Chim-Chim. The difference in the stories is a great dynamic. Well, the anthology format helps to tell these short stories that are one and done.

The artwork is fantastic and fun. Sebastian Piriz does an awesome job on the first tale. The chase scenes are fantastic and really put the reader into the action. The color scheme is vibrant and really attracts the eye to each panel. As for the second tale, Alessio Zonno brings a great deal of fun with the art. This captures the tone of this fun and entertaining story completely. The colors also match up and ramp the fun up to 11.

Final Thoughts

Speed Racer: Tales from the Road #1 is a really fun and entertaining companion piece to the Speed Racer universe. Both tales are vastly different in tone and content, but both fit the world impeccably. As this universe grows, it’s awesome to see these new and innovative ways to continue the expansion. Grab a copy of this book when you hit up your LCS, you’ll have fun and won’t be disappointed.
