“Star-Crossed #2” Review – Written in the Stars

The Run Down

If you missed the previous issue, you missed something truly amazing and special. Set in the “Millarworld” universe, “Star-Crossed” continues the adventures of Cody, Thena and Sharkey after their respective comic runs. After having successfully robbed the richest person in space, bounty hunters are now on the behinds of Cody and Thena. That includes Sharkey, who may be facing a dilemma of his own. Now I must ask, will you go on this epic space-faring adventure with me?

The Writing

Where the last issue opened up introducing us to our new villain, Millar smartly opens up here with Sharkey. Through this, we get brought into more of this universe and the troubles of Sharkey’s home world. It’s here that more of the messaging comes into play. While not playing coy, the message is one that’s very important for today: how the states’ environment and economy impact not just each other, but the disenfranchised. Specifically, Millar brings this issue up in regard to the elderly and the homeless; the people with nowhere else to go. That message carries all throughout this issue and may even be the purpose of this whole run. If it is, I’m more than excited to see this through until the end!

One other thing that I particularly liked about this issue was the humor. There was one moment in particular that really stood out to me, having plenty of double meaning in regard to relationships. This particular moment also really helped to build out Sharkey’s character to new readers, making him feel more relatable. However, this humor didn’t come without a cost, that being the utterly heartbreaking, expertly written plot twist.

The Art

To start this off, the combined stylings of Corrado and Niso Mastantuono make for a wonderful marriage. First off, Corrado’s use of space is truly magnificent. There was one moment in particular where the close-up was so well done, that I held my breath. Second, the breadth of detail he puts into these cities and worlds is simply astounding. I hardly ever see anything like it, so when I do, it stands out.

His work is matched perfectly by Niso who, together with Corrado, brings this run to life with beautiful color. The wide range makes this feel real while giving the universe so much character. This stuff truly belongs in a museum somewhere and I hope it is one day.

Final Thoughts

“Star-Crossed” continues to be a fantastic new addition to the Millarworld universe. This run is continuing to expand it in phenomenal ways that will make any fan feel like they’re in a star-crossed love. If you haven’t thought about picking this up, I highly entice you to do so.
