The Story

When you first dive into Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1, you have absolutely no idea where the story is going. What seems like a grounded tale dripping in political espionage turned out to be so much more. The book is filled with mystery, new characters, fascinating dynamics, and magic of all sorts. Our main character, Daniel Burroughs, is someone who’s gifted in ways that you learn throughout the story that keep your eyes glued to the pages. With his magical gifts being such a hot commodity, he joins Black Tower as their new rookie. Black Tower is a underground branch of British intelligence that deals with paranormal incidents. His first day on the job didn’t exactly go according to his own plan, but to others? He passed with flying colors while making his talents and his gifts known.

The writer, Ram V, does a brilliant job at keeping you engaged with the story while anxiously awaiting what happens in the next page. Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1 is a paranormal masterpiece that draws you in with its grittiness, its mystery, and the compelling storyline that you can’t help but wonder where its going. I’ll be waiting very excitedly for the next issue!

The Art

With a fantastic storyline, you have to have artwork that matches the quality and that’s precisely what the artists gave us. Mike Perkins, Mike Spicer, and Andworld Design brought so much to the pages of Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1. The tone is immediately set with a dark look into the night of London, with gorgeous linework and intricate details that make each page absolutely beautiful. As the story goes on, the magical element becomes more and more apparent, which Mike Perkins blends in with the dark and gritty factors flawlessly. The coloring of the comic brings so much depth to the drawings, with Mike Spicer playing off of the tones of the story expertly. There’s a great contrast between darker tones and vibrancy, while matching the muted colors of the setting. Absolutely stellar work. Andworld Design handles the lettering and really captures the innocent confusion of Daniel Burroughs, while harnessing the confidence of knowing too much from the other members of Black Tower.

Final Thoughts

Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1 proves that everything out of DC Vertigo should be jumped on immediately. This was a strong start to a comic series that has captured my attention from the first page and didn’t let go until the ending. I cannot recommend this comic enough!
