The Run Down
If you missed the previous issue, then allow me to catch you up! First, it turns out Clara’s alive. Second, she’s made a new friend in her brief, permanent death! Whether or not said friend has the best of intentions remains to be seen, but maybe it’ll become clearer here? Well, find out with me as I review Stjepan Šejić’s “Death Vigil #3”!

The Writing
At the end of the previous issue, Šejić hinted that we’d get some unknown history between two of our characters. Well, I’m happy to report that he decided not just to tell, but to show! From the first page, I was absolutely sucked in, wanting as much of this backstory as possible. Since I was able to see everything, it made me feel that much more immersed in the world and characters. This move also allowed Šejić to show off one of his other strengths: making these larger-than-life characters relatable.
Creating character relatability has always been one of his strengths, and he shows it beautifully here. Šejić is excellent at leading you in with expectations and making you leave with so much more. The relatability that he brings really works to make everything feel more tangible and makes the incredible cliffhangers hit harder.

The Art
While Šejić’s art is almost always incredible, he truly went above and beyond here, specifically with the facial expressions. When it came to Bernie specifically, seeing her cry damn near made me do the same. The facial expressions truly lend themselves heavily to the aforementioned relatability. His art and colors really work to make his worlds feel real in a way that’s tough for most others to accomplish.
Final Thoughts
Stjepan Šejić is on a serious roll with “Death Vigil”. Šejić is creating a story full of not just death, but life and its complications. I really can’t wait for the next issue!
