The Story
Now THAT’S how you get a story started! Gerry Duggan brings the excitement to the Next Level in Next Level: One Shot #1 and keeps that same energy throughout the comic. Our main character is Deadshot, who has had his work cut out for him ever since Superman’s disappearance after DC KO. He’s dealt with clones, drones, mutant dogs, and everything in between. While everything has been confusing and strange, he stays on the path of being DC’s deadliest assassin.
However, things get even weirder when he links up with Rick Flag, who’s struggling harder than anyone. Rick is running on no sleep and what feels like pure paranoia, but is there some truth to what he fears? Deadshot finds out that there’s so much more to the story and while he learns more and more, you’re left on the edge of your seat.
What I love about this comic is that you don’t have to be an expert in Deadshot’s history. You really don’t have to know anything about him at all. The story is a crash course into who Deadshot is as a character, while giving a complete story that’s high in action and keeps you eyes glued to the pages.
The Art
The artists matched the excitement of the story brilliantly, leaving little to the imagination. Fernando Blanco came in with excellent linework and intricate details on every page. I really loved the looks through Deadshot’s bionic eye, as we get to see the story through his perspective. Jordie Bellaire made it their mission to make Next Level: One Shot #1 a vibrant masterpiece that leans heavily into the bold and striking colors that juxtapose the dark details. Blanco and Bellaire worked beautifully off each other and it shows brightly! Buddy Beaudoin captures so many different tones though the dialogue. Whether it’s Rick Flag’s paranoia, Deadshot’s humor, or the blatant seriousness of the other characters, you can practically hear the different emotions in your head. Together, the artists made this an incredibly creative comic that left a lasting impression.
Final Thoughts
This comic had it all! There was excitement, action, an excellent storyline, and great dynamics that you love to see. I cannot recommend this comic enough!
