Jumpscare Debuts with a Blast of Action
The Beyond Mortal Universe brings us a new tale in its aftermath. Jumpscare makes her debut as she saves a group of teenagers cornered in a dark alley by a leviathan monster! Her cool makeshift costume and armor already jumps of the page and catches the eye, but when she manifests a chainsaw from a horror movie out of thin air…it was awesome!
Cullen Bunn plays out The Venom War!
Of course no superhero is complete without an alter ego or secret identity that has to deal with real world issues. Allie is the daughter of a very clean cut, conservative, God loving family that sees her as a black sheep heathen. Bummer. Allie doesn’t let that hold her back though. She’s out there living her best life and having fun fighting monsters in the process!
Cullen Bunn Has Fun Bringing Jumpscare to Life
Cullen Bunn continues to flex his horror muscles in a new series featuring a new character. He immediately sets the tone with a big, flashy horror monster fight in which Jumpscare summons a chainsaw from a specific in universe horror movie. It’s a nice touch when we see a ticket stub appear with the weapons reference, movie title, and date of release. After the fight see that Jumpscare is pretty chill, taking a selfie with the victims she saved and talking a little light hearted trash.
Godzilla vs The Power Rangers?! A story by Cullen Bunn!
Of course, Bunn doesn’t skip out on the human aspect either. We get a look at Allie’s early life in a home that didn’t exactly fit her personality. Her parents are relentless with their comparisons to her older sister. She’s clean cut, fashionable, and a church youth leader. These are all things that Allie could care less about. When later on we find out that her parents are leading a crusade against vigilantes (like herself) when end up with a surprising reunion!
Horror Art Evolved in Jumpscare
The artwork in this issue is phenomenal. Details on top of details. Colors that draw in the eye and keep them engaged. Awesome monster designs splash across panels, but so does the action! The effects used to show the appearance of the weapons Jumpscare summons give us the impression that it’s probably an evil power. Everything is in synergy with the aspect of horror, but color palettes make us feel at ease. It’s clear that Jumpscare holds a terrible power, but it’s being used for good, and maybe sometimes for fun!
Overall Grade 10/10
This is a great debut for Jumpscare! I’m heavily invested in what comes next! My first thoughts were that Allie was something akin to Harley Quinn. She is in attitude really, but she’s so much more! I love the horror genre painted across the story of a super hero. Bunn develops his characters with ease and with great pacing. Luckert paints a beautiful, blood splattered story over soft pastels and cool greens and blues! It’s an well rounded blast to read from cover to cover!
