The Hunger and the Dusk by IDW Publishing
Book one of ‘The Hunger and the Dusk’ took place over 6 issues. Throughout those issues we saw humans and orcs come together to fight a common threat.
Tara the orc, and Cal the human were to marry via a treaty that would hopefully bring peace, and help both humans and orcs fight the Vangol. Their bond began and seemed genuine. However, the threat they face goes much deeper than they thought, and their generations of prejudice against each other seem to be taking over. Tara has moved on and their hope for a peaceful future is dwindling, and the world around them is literally dying.

The Story for Book 2, Issue 1
Book 2 kicks right off with the last men standing. As they’re licking their wounds from another battle, they all seem to miss Tara. An orc who they once were unsure about because of the generations of hate they were taught to have toward her kind. While Tara’s presence was diplomatic, she grew on them, and helped them see past their bias. As events unfold and a new person joins the last men, Cal realizes he messed up in more ways than one.
The Art
War, pain, love, passion, etc. These are all severe emotions one feels when in the moment. Each character in ‘The Hunger and the Dusk’ has such detailed emotions on their face that you can truly feel the energy of each scene. Meanwhile the backgrounds and colors compliment each moment so perfectly. Whether a battle is ensuing, or a little seduction is taking place, the emotions and the atmosphere all flow so beautifully.
The Hunger and the Dusk Rating: 9.5/10
Over the past year, this has hands down been one of my favorite comics. After a hiatus, I’m so glad they’re back and the story picked right up where it left us. Overall ‘The Hunger and the Dusk’ is a love story during a time where love is not a priority. War seems to be everywhere while the lands are dying. Resources are limited, and The Vangol keep closing in. In the end can anything actually save both human and orckind: Love, diplomacy, armies, healers?
While I don’t know the answer yet, I have genuinely enjoyed every issue so far, and can’t recommend adding this one to your pull list enough!
