Top 10 Most Anticipated Comics for the Week of 9/27/2023

0

Is there anything better than anticipation? Who doesn’t love watching a well-constructed movie trailer over and over to build up hype for a new release? Perhaps the only thing better than opening a present is the thoughts that go through your head wondering what exactly you are about to receive.

For those that do not know me I am a big believer in, “Comics are forever one, the key is finding the right one”. It is that pursuit I hope to help people with, and hopefully an article like this can point people in a direction they were not expecting.

With that in mind here are my Top 10 Most Anticipated Books for next week. It’s quite the stacked week so limiting to ten was not easy! After much thought here’s the list:

Editor note: All Description portions come directly from their respected publishers

10. The Invincible Iron Man #10

Writer: Gerry Duggan

Artist: Juan Frigeri

Publisher: Marvel

Description: You are cordially invited to the wedding of Anthony Edward Stark and Emma Grace Frost… Come join the lucky couple as they exchange vows. Attire is Hellfire formal. Orchis raid to follow. Plus some exclusive wedding extras!

Why it Made the List: I have been enjoying this current run of Iron Man a great deal, but even I was quite puzzled by the announcement of Tony Stark and Emma Frost getting married. It is rather out of left field, and I feared it was nothing more than a hallow gimmick that lacked much of a story. We have gotten a tad more context but I still have so many questions on how exactly this will work. It could easily go either way which is a big reason I am anticipating so much. Should give us plenty to discuss either way. Plus who doesn’t love a comic book wedding?

9. The Nasty #4

Writer: John Lees

Artist: George Kambadais

Publisher: Vault

Description: Production on the Glasgow remake of House of Creeping Flesh is well underway, with the local supermarket transformed into a house of horrors for makeshift night shoots. But underneath the gory prosthetics and wooden line delivery, a very real threat is taking ever more concrete shape, growing harder for Thumper and his friends to control.

Why it Made the List: Spooky season is right around the corner which means bring on the horror movies and horror comics, and with The Nasty you get a bit of both. Love the throwback design of this series, and if you are a person who misses that feeling you would get trying to find that perfect movie at your local video store this gives you just enough nibbling of nostalgia. I have also enjoyed how much this series has kept me on my toes. Thought I knew exactly where it was going from the start but it keeps finding avenues I was not expecting.

8. Newburn #11.

Writer: Chip Zdarsky, David Brothers

Artist: Nick Dragotta, Jacob Phillips

Publisher: Image Comics

Description: An ex-Yakuza is on his way to the States for a liver transplant in exchange for intel on NYC Yakuza activities. To stop the info from making it to the Feds, Newburn and Emily have to dodge the cops and the FBI. PLUS: In “GO BACK” by DRAGOTTA & BROTHERS, the kid tries to find a single friend in a city of eight million strangers.

Why it Made the List: When it comes to television I am not a huge fan of procedural shows outside of throwing on Law & Order in the background when working on something else. With comics though? I love procedural storytelling especially when exists outside of the superhero world. Newburn has been exceptional in how it has utilized the classic soap opera storytelling style of having a differing A plot in nearly every issue, while the world and characters are built up in the B and C plots. Plus what an art team! Nick Dragotta and Jacob Phillips are both great storytellers who have styles that complement each other well. Great series for anyone who enjoys series like Criminal or 100 Bullets.

7. Conan the Barbarian #3

Writer: Jim Zub

Artist: Roberto De La Torre

Publisher: Titan Books

Description: ROBERT E. HOWARD’S LEGENDARY CONAN IS BACK IN A NEW TALE OF BRAVERY AND HEROISM! Years after the battle of Venarium, a weary CONAN returns to his homeland to seek rest and solitude. However, a mysterious scout rides in to warn the Cimmerians of an imminent threat on the march from the Pictish wilderness. Will CONAN and his new ally be able to hold off this new horde of invaders?

Why it Made the List: The recipe for a great issue of Conan the Barbarian is not the most complex, but there are plenty of great meals that are not that difficult to make. The key is to have a great artist, which this series has with Roberto De La Torre and colorist Dean White. The other piece is to understand the character of Conan. Yes, he is a Barbarian but he is not a mindless brute, and so far this current run has done a good job displaying that.

6. Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special #2

Writer: Jeremy Lambert

Artist: Claire Roe

Publisher: IDW Publishing

Description: There’s a monster lurking outside of Minersville, and he’s tired of hiding. Everyone thinks Viv’s crazy. Delusional. That she didn’t see what she saw. Everyone, that is, except the locals. Vivian copes the best way she can: with a visit to the local watering hole. But it’s what happens after that changes everything. The Mismatch Man is hungry, you see, and Vivian’s many wounds have never healed.

Why it Made the List: Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special #1 was an issue I was not expecting much of but it really surprised me especially the artwork of Claire Roe. There was a page I broke down on my TikTok channel I just adored. It utilized the reflections of bottles as comic panels in a rather ingenious way. Rather excited to see what else this team can do as this story further develops as the horror element was just beginning as the issue ended.

5. The Penguin #2

Writer: Tom King

Artist: Rafael de Latorre

Publisher: DC Comics

Description: Oswald Cobblepot is preparing to take back the Gotham underworld at the behest of the U.S. government, but to wage this war, he’s going to need some ruthless soldiers. For starters…the Help, the merciless assassin Penguin first encountered in the epic Batman: Killing Time. But can the Penguin free the Help from a prison of his own making? Whoever wins, everyone dies. The tough-as-nails series continues!

Why it Made the List: I am going to say something that might lose me any ounce of credibility I had with some people…I rather enjoyed Tom King’s run on Batman. (Pause for Boo’s) I tend to be fascinated with the way he takes on Gotham. Did everything work for me? Of course not, but even things I thought were not successful were at least interesting. So seeing him return to Gotham has been a treat, and not having the baggage of being a Batman main title so there’s a bit more freedom. And as always he is teamed up with a great artist in Rafael de Latorre. Penguin’s never been a character I gravitated toward, but the approach has made him more than an overblown gimmick.

4. Fire Power #27

Writer: Robert Kirkman

Artist: Chris Samnee

Publisher: Image Comics

Description: Another member of the Johnson family has learned the fire power, but with Shaw’s reach extending in Chicago, Owen and his army will have to strike soon—whether they’re ready or not.

Why it Made the List: Robert Kirkman is the King of Comics right now beyond the success of the adaptations of many of his comics Skybound is already seeing massive success with the Transformers and G.I. Joe comics, (And they haven’t even been released yet) What can be lost in all that, is what I consider his best comic series, is nearing its end. Chris Samnee is one of today’s best artists when it comes to depicting great action sequences so placing him in a martial arts epic series like this has been a treat. Sad this is ending at issue thirty but also much prefer a series ending too soon than ending far too late.

3. Second Coming: Trinity #6

Writer: Mark Russell

Artist: Leonard Kirk, Richard Pace

Publisher: Ahoy Comics

Description: Heartbreaking final issue of the series that’s “incredibly empathetic, thoughtful, and — in the right places — deeply funny” (Comics Beat). Sheila and Sunstar must make some tough decisions, ones that will change not only their lives but their son’s life as well. It’s never easy to say goodbye… Also featuring bonus stories and illustrations, including a new chapter of the AHOY fifth anniversary prose serial.

Why it Made the List: Get ready to see a lot of Mark Russell series showing up on these lists in the future. Ever since his work on Prez and The Flintstones, he has been one of my favorite writers. The Second Coming series has been up there as one of his best books as well. Not often you get this thought-provoking tale that combines theology and superheroes in an elegant but humorous way. This year marks the fifth year anniversary for Ahoy and in my opinion, in those five years this has been their best series.

2. The Flash #1

Writer: Simon Spurrier

Artist: Mike Deodato Jr.

Publisher: DC Comics

Description: WALLY WEST RACES TOWARDS THE FUTURE WITH A NEW ALL-STAR CREATIVE TEAM! Wally West has never been quicker, more fulfilled, more heroic. His loving family is around him. And yet something is off. Very off. His evolving understanding of his powers has opened Wally to new avenues of sci-fi adventure and attuned his senses to strange new ideas. Something whispers from the dark vibrations beyond the Speed Force, and as Wally experiments with creative new approaches to his powers he encounters new realms, mysterious allies, and mind-shattering terrors.

Why it Made the List: Part of me is still upset this comic exists because I was really enjoying the Flash Run prior to this. Felt like the closest we have gotten to Mark Waid’s epic run, but not in a way that was overly reliant on what came before. With that said this creative team has me excited about what is possible for this character. Simon Spurrier’s run on Hellblazer was one of my favorite DC comics in forever, and Mike Deodato Jr. has been putting out quality work for decades including his recent work for AWA Upshot. Hearing this has more of a horror feel has me both intrigued and skeptical. Suffice to say this has me filled with a multitude of emotions.

1. Usagi Yojimbo: Ice and Snow #1

Writer/Artist: Stan Sakai

Publisher: Dark Horse

Description: Usagi and Yukichi are still in the snowy mountaintops of Northern Japan, following Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo story arc, “The Green Dragon.” They are led to the hut of a strange hermit who allows them to spend the night at her home to shelter from the snowstorm. Meanwhile, the maniacal Jei and his familiar, Keiko, are on Usagi’s trail when they stumble upon a bandit lair and subdue a band of cutthroats and thieves.

Why it Made the List: When it came to number one this week that choice was quite easy. Despite that number one on the cover, there have been hundreds of issues of Usagi Yojimbo. If you have never read an issue prior don’t fret because Stan Sakai is the master of writing stories that are welcoming to new readers and satisfying to old. This does mark the series’ return to Dark Horse, and despite the number of different publishers throughout its over thirty-year run the quality of storytelling never suffers. It is not hyperbolic to call it one of the most impressive runs in the history of comics and after a few months off we are getting a new issue! Considering all that and my love of the series easily my most anticipated book of the week.

GRIM #13 Review – A Heart Breaks in Hell

GRIM #13 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Boom! Studios)

GRIM #13 by BOOM! STUDIOS

CREATIVE: Stephanie PhillipsFlaviano, Rico Renzi Tom Napolitano

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a series that transcends comics. Since its’ debut, GRIM from Boom! Studios has been more than just “reading a comic”. It literally has been an experience and vibe all its’ own.

With unique visuals and an ever-engaging story, the life and times of a reaper and her friends have never been more featured in such a stand-out way. Now on its’ third arc, all bets are off on how Jessica Harrow gets out of the latest situation she finds herself in.

GRIM #13 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano breaks away from the main story to focus on a dive into one character’s personal hell (literally). Let’s not waste another moment and jump into this incredible series, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** SEE PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

GRIM #13 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Boom! Studios) Cover: Zu Orzu

Since readers have been introduced to Jessica Harrow, they have bared witness to danger following her at every moment. From an initial runaway soul transfer to finding out she is the daughter of Death, “It’s Complicated” is arguably the easiest way to describe her life. Along for the ride are two friends: Eddie and Marcel.

In the current arc, Jessica was betrayed by Annabel, a fellow reaper to Adira, the current reigning figure of the afterlife. Adira is also Jessica’s aunt. Annabel has had ulterior motives for what she does. Working a deal with Kelly (a devil), Annabel uses Marcel’s soul as payment. Feeling the pressure of her plans caving in, Adira tries pleading with Jessica to assist her in a surprise twist. However, Jessica has never lost sight that Marcel is gone because of her scheming.

This issue finally catches readers up to what happened to Marcel as Kelly sent him to hell (literally). The story begins with an “Act 1: Creation” introduction like a play. A narrator speaks in French to let the audience know the back story. Suddenly, the story lands in France 1898.

Marcel and his lover Henri are in the Cabaret watching the narrator. The couple’s playful banter camouflages the situation at hand. Henri pleads his case with Marcel until they wind up on stage in-front of the crowd. The scene turns quickly as Marcel is confronted with questions if he is an angel or devil? While trying to escape the mob, the breaking of Marcel has begun with haunting questions.

GRIM #13 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano (Boom! Studios) Cover: Cully Hamner

What level of Hell has Marcel wound up in? Readers quickly see that Marcel is being forced to relive his past mistakes along the way down. The mood is brooding and at times, Marcel becomes shaken at what he is witnessing. There are more acts to follow until the final destination is hit but is it truly the end? There is much to break down in this emotional issue.

Phillips pens a tale of self-exploration, forcing Marcel into uncomfortable territory. Due to the tragic way things ended with his lover previously, the writing reflects that pain. The pacing takes Marcel’s decent into personal hell slowly enough that readers can feel the torment.

The conversations of Henri and Marcel vary from playful to anger with more in-between. Once the final act starts, the tension built unloads into a boiling point. Its’ resolution concludes the issue on an intriguing note as to where things go from here.

Flaviano and Renzi construct the visuals in another standout way. Marking the acts in Full Page Panels let readers know what level Marcus was descending into. The coloring inside the Cabaret gave a distinct feel as Henri and Marcel’s banter took the chapter into a noteworthy direction.

This is mixed in with strong images ranging from a frightening end to the middle act while raising the emotional tension between the two in the final act. The closing panel poses some questions but completes the torturous journey for now.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The descent into personal Hell makes a lasting impression in the pages of Boom! Studios’ hit series. Phillips presents the emotional turmoil of a tortured soul with the always impressive visuals of Flaviano, giving this series a feel and look like no one else. There is no excuse to pass on this issue on New Comic Book Day!

Kaya # 11 – The War of the Factions

0
Kaya #11: Wes Craig (story, art and design), Jason Wordie (colors), Tom Napolitano (letters), Erika Schnatz (design) Credit Image Comics

Kaya Issue 11 –  Image Comics

Creative team: Wes Craig (story, art and design), Jason Wordie(colors), Tom Napolitano(letters), Erika Schnatz (design)

Check out the review of Kaya #10 here!

The Story:

We last left Kaya and her allies deep in the poison lands where they happened to find Jin and his captors. This issue opens with Lord Vox of the Robots Legion and his 2 allies, a dragon like creature and a warthog gorilla like creature, who are about to deliver Jin to the Lord Proctus of the Robot legion.

All of a sudden, the gorilla-like creature steps in and demands that he gets what was promised to him by Lord Vox. Helping overthrow another king.

At the same time, Jin is going through an internal struggle of his own where he is justifying his existence and if he actually is the golden one. Kaya at this point steps in and opens fire with her bow to save Jin igniting an all out brawl on multiple fronts! This issue continues to explore these battles as we progress through the panels.

The Art, Colors and Design:

I can’t continue to stress enough how insanely creative Wes Craig’s characters are in this series! Craig continues to pull double duty in both the story and Art for this series and his hard work is paying dividends in this final issue of the second arch. The addition of Jason Wordie’s vibrant colors drives home the tone and emotion. Especially in the battle scenes and touching moments between Jin and Kaya! The paneling designs during the battle sequence really exemplify the complexity of the conflict and added another level of tension to the story!

Final Thoughts:

This issue did a great job wrapping up the second arch and tying up loose ends. It also establishes enough of the next story lines to keep readers intrigued and wanting more! I absolutely loved the first backstory that we got about Kaya between the first 2 volumes and I am very excited that we will be getting another backstory before the start of volume 3!

Overall Rating 9 out 10

Something is Killing the Children #33 Review – The Breaking Point

0
Something is Killing the Children #33 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto, and Andworld Design. (credit Boom! Studios. Cover by Werther Dell’edera.)

Creative Team: BOOM! STUDIOS

Writer: James Tynion lV

Illustrator: Werther Dell’edera

Colorist: Miquel Muerto

Lettered By: Andworld Design

Cover by: Werther Dell’edera

Variant Covers: Christian Ward, Ariela Kristantina, and Tonci Zonjic

RECAP: PREVIOUS ISSUE

The story starts with Gabi in a pool getting “therapy” before deciding that she and Riqui should go and therapy isn’t for her. The two arrive at Erica practicing her bow and arrow shooting albeit poorly at that. The trio is prepping for the up-and-coming fight as things are beginning to come to a head.

THE ART:

The grunge-style artwork by Werther and Miquel continues to be a strength of this series as the detail and emotions they are able to convey on the page are next to none. You can feel the heaviness and the weight that Erica and the characters hold on each page building to something grand. I could not imagine anyone else behind the artwork as they execute every moment flawlessly.

THE WRITING:

Much like the art James is building to something and he crafts it very well in the words he is laying on the pages. While Erica is busy preparing unbeknownst to her there is danger right around the corner which moves the story forward and builds upon the suspense that continues to grow. He even manages to get some light on the situation with the horse not named Gary which alleviates the seriousness of it all. James has fully taken the reigns on the echelon of top-tier comic book writers.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

The suspense this issue continues to build is very well executed and you can feel the tension growing within yourself as the story builds and it creates an impatience of dying to know how it all ends. There is a reason that Boom! Studios should be mentioned with the heavyweights of publishing and this run is a prime example.

NOCTERRA #16 Review – IS THERE LIGHT IN THE END?

NOCTERRA #16 by Image Comics

Creative: Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Marcelo Miaolo and Andworld Design

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, readers have come to the end of the road (for now?) for one of Image Comics’ most exciting series. Since its’ debut issue, the story of Valentina “Val” Riggs aka Sundog and the battle against eternal darkness has won fans over with fast paced action and high drama.

Now with its’ latest arc ready to close, the creative team throws caution against the wind with an unforgettable conclusion to what has been a highly entertaining story arc.

NOCTERRA #16 by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Marcelo Miaolo and Andworld Design brings a definitive finale to the “No Brakes” storyline. Let’s not wait and deep dive into where Val and the Sundog Convey head now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** NEMESIS REVIEW

With the world in eternal darkness, there is very little hope to be had. However, for the members of the SunDog Convoy, that is all they have. After picking up Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper on a ferryman run, Val (along with her adopted brother Emory) embark on a journey to find a save haven through the endless night.

Their journey has taken many twists and turns. It has also brought them into the path of Blacktop Bill, a dangerous follower of NOX. With the remaining members of the group arriving at Eos, a place of sunlight, plans do not go as planned. Blacktop Bill shows up and brings a fight with him. Emory decides to make a tough call and tries drawing out NOX in a trap.

Looking for MORE Image Comics?

One of the components is to mentally connect with Bill. Once Emery does this, he quickly finds out that he is vastly outmatched. Bill sees thru Emory’s plan and NOX is now poised to enter the fight.

The story shifts to Thirteen years prior with Emory going to school. Emory addresses the audience about theories. It also is used as the backdrop to his complicated relationship with his birth mother. This quickly becomes a prequel for an event fans of this series has been waiting for. This is the moment the Sun “was killed”.

Fast forwarding to present time, Val and Emory are surrounded by Bill’s forces. When inside Emory’s mind, Bill figured out what the plan was and struck first. With the dark forces surrounding them, all hope looks lost. That is until an unlikely save is made.

A NEW ERA FOR A LEGENDARY CHARACTER

Who has entered the standoff against Bill? What of Eos and the fate of the light? With Nox fast approaching, can the convoy make it to another day? Readers brace for impact as the battle is taken up another notch with Humanity’s fate hanging in the balance. There is no stopping to catch a breath.

Once the final act hits, readers are gifted a stunning resolution to what had happened. Letting the final moments sink in with stunning final images caps off a strong farewell for now, not forever.

Snyder leaves little behind as the final showdown between the Convoy and Nox lives up to the hype. Using Emory’s painful memories as a backdrop, the story reflects the hopelessness of the world they live in. With every advance Val and company make, readers sense it’s only temporary. Snyder never lets that stop the convoy members from trying to win.

MORE SCOTT SNYDER!

Blacktop Bill steals this issue with his unrelenting attacks. The showdown with Emory is a satisfying conclusion to a build constructed heavily over the past few issues (and “Nemesis” special). The conclusion sets a fitting tone for where things will lead next time the convoy rolls on.

Daniel and Miaolo deliver on spectacular visuals throughout the issue. Opening with Emory’s past reflections, the emotional details laid out are an easy connect with readers. This carries to the current timeframe of the story. A smashing two-page full panel image of Val’s “back-up” sets the pace for the rest of the issue.

The menacing nature of Blacktop Bill shines through these pages as well. The evil grin never lets up as he takes on all challengers of the Convoy. The showdown with Emory will leave its’ mark with readers. Its’ resolution brings the fast-moving action to a screeching halt. The terror of Nox is split between two page half panels, making for quite the impression. The closing visuals bring a superb close to an action ride that shows no sign of slowing down, even after the last full page panel.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The Convoy’s last stand versus Blacktop Bill and Nox finishes with an epic conclusion that shouldn’t be missed. Snyder’s flawless writing matched with the amazing visuals of Daniel concludes the hopeless fight against darkness for now, until it’s time to hit the road again on New Comic Book Day!

Klik Klik Boom!

Klik Klik Boom has kept me engaged and curious from beginning to end. Our main character, Sprout, is on a murder spree for revenge, but she still somehow maintains an innocence about her. While Sprout does not speak, she communicates with polaroid pictures.

Whether it’s to save a friend’s life, or to show someone why she is about to murder them, her polaroids seem to speak louder than words ever could. As we learn more about her backstory and reason for wanting revenge, the overall picture is becoming more clear.

Check out the Issue #3 review.

The Story

Page from Klik Klik Boom from Image Comics
Images of Klik Klik Boom provided by Image Comics

Klik Klik Boom Issue #4 kicks off with a very pleasant surprise. One that, much like Quicksilver, I did not see coming. As quick as we get a good surprise, here comes a bad guy, with his narcissistic bad guy speech.

However, Sprout does not disappoint. She beautifully handles herself all the while, continuing to utilize her pictures to say what she needs to.

Throughout this comic we have gone back and forth from present day, to flashbacks of Sprout and her grandfather. The flashback in this issue immediately made me think of of Scrooge McDuck, and giggle.

Nevertheless, the Disney moment passes as quick as it came. We learn a bit more about Grandpa’s past, and why Sprout is the way she is. We also get a line about family from him, that shows a bit about why she is so protective of those she cares about.

This issue ended a bit differently than the last three. Much like before, we were left with wanting more, but this time there seemed to be some light up ahead.

The Art

With a story where your main character speaks through pictures, you need the art to go a bit further than it usually does. Much like the previous issues, the art tells the story well, while also making the audience empathize with Sprout.

I see an innocence in everything about her, but especially her eyes. I also see it with her need to protect those she loves. The art does that well. It’s almost calming at times, even when Sprout is very cleverly murdering someone.

Klik Klik Boom Rating: 8.5/10

While this issue seemed lighter than the first three, it’s still filled with murder, mystery, and polaroids. Each issue gets me more attached to Sprout and the story behind her grandfather. Her pictures create puzzles that then explain and move the story along in a way dialogue couldn’t.

I look forward to issue five to see how  Sprout, the “snapshot diva” continues to pursue revenge and justice. If Klik Klik Boom isn’t already on your pull list, it’s not too late to add it!

TMNT x STRANGER THINGS 3 REVIEW – INTO THE UNKNOWN

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things #3 by Cameron Chittock, Fero Pe, Sofie Dodgson, and Rus Wooton. (credit IDW Publishing and Dark Horse.)

RECAP: PREVIOUS REVIEW

Dustin and his crew are busy trying to get El and Raphael out of the machine they are hooked up to. Meanwhile, inside the machine, Stockman is facing off against the duo when El uses her powers to free them and thus the crew captures him and leads him to tell them his plan.

Over at the subway Will and the remainder defeat the creatures and head into the upside down where they discover something even more menacing at work.

The Art:

Fero and Sofie really went to work on this issue. The way they use the colors setting the tones and bringing in the uses of reds and black colors when fighting in the subway was extremely well done.

This issue is the duo’s strongest yet as their talent shines brightly. The contrast between the lab and the subway paints a wonderful tone for this issue. There is one scene where Michelangelo utilizes fiery Knunchucks that is my favorite scene from this run yet.

The Writing:

I feel Chittock really does his strongest work yet in this issue. Eleven showcases her mighty abilities and the way they showcase Raphaels’ passion and anger really set the dire tone. One thing that I loved was that the team gave Will a major upcoming role and something to do in this issue. His bravery is on full display and he knows what is at stake and steps up to the plate.

Final Thoughts:

inferno girl red book two

The third entry in this limited series was by far the strongest entry yet. The entire team brings their absolute best and it shows in this issue. We continue to build up to an epic finale and all of the characters are shining brighter than ever across both franchises and this story just makes so much sense.

The Art, Colors and Letters:

If we have learned anything thus far from this series is that colors matter! This is one of the coolest little  touches that I have enjoyed about this mini run. There are ways in which colors are mixed into this issue that do a great job foreshadowing who has what powers and what powers might still be yet to come!

The black and white art and line work done by Khary Randolph completely enhance the emotional journey that we are taken on in this issue! Randolph crushes the action sequences, which keeps the readers on the edge of their seats the entire time! The subtle additions to the lettering by Andworld Design enhances the tone and makes the story easy to follow during the flashback sequence.

Final Thoughts:

This issue was a mountainous journey to the finish line full of emotional peaks and valleys. We got some of our questions answered but so many more have come into the fold! Can’t wait to see what the next one brings!

SUPERMAN #6 by DC Comics

Creative: Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out one of the standout series of the “Superman” line over at DC Comics!

Since it’s kickoff in the “Dawn Of DC” era, the Man of Steel’s books have had a renewed focus, winning over fans with each issue. Case in point has been the latest “Superman” title by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell.

After a brief hiatus with “Knight Terrors” and a strong Annual issue, the series returns to shops with Gleb Melnikov board for art along with Williamson, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher. Let’s take a closer look at Superman #6, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** ANNUAL REVIEW

Superman and Lex Luthor have always had a unique connection to say the least. In this current series, Lex is behind bars but has left Superman a massive gift in his absence. Superman is now in charge of the newly renamed “Supercorp”. With resources like that at his disposal, Supes should find crime-fighting easier. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case.

Surprise to no one, Lex has made some enemies. Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft are two that have made some noise as of late that can’t be ignored. While using a Kyrptonite Klaw, they have amplified some of Superman’s rogues to new heights. This has all be a plan to keep him at bay while Lex is attacked and nearly killed in prison!

This issue opens up with the frantic attempt to save Lex’s life. The imagery holds nothing back at how grim the situation has become. The story jumps two weeks later is to see Superman is back in action, yet not quite himself. Not being there for Lex is weighing heavy on his mind.

More from Joshua Williamson!

Meanwhile at the Daily Planet, it is business as usual with Lois Lane handling duties as serving Editor-In-Chief. Lois and Clark have a brief chat which leads to Clark heading to his “corporation” for help with solving the riddle of “Project: Chained”.

Readers find out there is a specialized prison underneath Stryker’s Island. Someone is there, but no one knows the reason why. What kind of power needs that kind of containment? As Superman looks to diver further into the mystery, the answers he finds will be shocking.

Can he even handle what has been discovered? If the last page is any indication, bracing for impact is required with a parting image that jumps off the page leading to the monster Superman #850!

Williamson does an amazing job at tying in classic superhero plots with modern times. The relationship between Clark and Lex has always been rocky at its’ best case. Seeing Clark’s conscious weigh heavy for failing brings the near-perfect hero down to a grounded level.

It is Clark’s unwavering sense of truth, justice and a better tomorrow that leads him to utilizing “Supercorp” when even he has reservations. The mystery plays out well with Williamson leaving many questions unanswered for now. The final pages really drive home the point of how high the stakes are heading into the anniversary issue.

BATMAN FIGHTS BACK!

Melnikov steps in for art duties and brings a unique vision of Superman’s world to readers. There is an excellent two page spread of Superman flying over cars in Metropolois that feels like a vintage superhero image (which is fantastic). The scenes with Lois and Clark reflect the frustration both are dealing with respectively.

The action panels flow very easy and readers will sense the threat level with a great two-page spread of Superman addressing what he finds in his search. The final images leave no doubt that the story is only beginning and question if Superman can really save the day next time readers see him.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The new arc of Joshua Williamson’s “Superman” doesn’t delay in bringing action and excitement to readers. Sharp writing and excellent visuals by Melnikov and Sánchez give readers a fun story to jump along for the ride heading to the monumental Superman #850!
