It’s not very often a comic comes along that’s based on a true story. This comic is about the insane events that happened on a ranch in Northeastern Utah named Skinwalker Ranch. Do you love shows like the X-Files, Fringe or Paranormal investigations? You’re in good company with this series so let’s get into it!

The Background:

This 4 issue mini series opens up with a redacted title page that instantly gave me X-Files vibes and I immediately knew this issue was going to be a trip! Readers don’t need any background about Skinwalker Ranch prior to reading  because Writer Zac Thompson crafts a reader friendly narrative that flows similar to investigation type shows.

Immediately, we start out on the ranch where Tom Gorman, the father of the family, is digging holes for a new fence and listening to an old school radio. At the same time his wife, Ellen Gorman, is putting away groceries like any other normal day. When suddenly, after getting a drink of water, Tom’s post hole digger mysteriously vanishes. A similar situation happens to Ellen where her groceries are magically put back in their bags. This is just the beginning of the puzzling events that are told during this first book.

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

The Stylistic approach that Valeria Burzo takes with the art plays well by building suspense as the issue progresses to more obscure and unexplained events. Jason Wordie’s colors build on the suspense and help showcase the overall fear that Ellen and Tom are going through. The more traditional paneling and lettering techniques used by Joe Sabino allow the comic to flow seamlessly between events, create additional tension and allow for an immersive reader friendly experience.

Final Thoughts:

This first issue did a great job giving new readers the background needed for those that are unfamiliar with Skinwalker Ranch while building the excitement and anticipation for what’s to come!

Overall Rating: 8 out of 10
