The Man Who Can Not Die

Kit Walker tells how he came upon some smugglers in the jungle to his girlfriend Diana. You see, Kit Walker is the guardian of the jungle, the hero known as The Phantom. As he recalls the events of the day, including visiting the villagers of Bandar. The village is a peaceful place that has stayed cut off from the rest of the world. After discovering the smugglers, The Phantom knows the village and its people are going to be in grave danger. That danger comes in the form of Asif Singh and his group, the Singh Brotherhood. Now The Phantom will have to save the village and his friends from this horrible warlord.

Hostile Takeover

The first issue of The Phantom dives right into the story and hits the ground running. Ray Fawkes wastes no time putting the reader in the thick of things, well giving enough backstory for those who may not know the character. This method makes for an exciting first issue that skips past the things that usually bog down a first issue. The action comes hot and heavy which really makes for a fun and exciting read. Couple that with an intense cliffhanger ending, and you have a homerun of a first issue.

The art in this issue is very good and gives the reader a more classic comic book feel. Russell Olson does a great job of updating this classic character, well at the same time paying homage to the original creation. The backgrounds and action scenes really steal the show on the art front. Meanwhile, Taylor Esposito does an amazing job with the lettering, which keeps the reader informed as well as bringing out the mood of the story.

Final Thoughts

The Phantom #1 does a fantastic job of rebooting an icon of superhero stories. The action and setup of what’s to come keeps the reader engaged and wanting more. The cliffhanger ending will have you hooked for sure. This is a book you will need to grab at the LCS this week and seriously consider adding to your Pull List as well.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
