The Story

The story follows a young woman by the name of Layla Brown, who lives a normal life as someone who works for a big company. She’s much more introverted than others around her, and that seems to work for her. On this day, it seemed to be just like any ordinary day. A coworker comes in asking for help with her taxes forms, and all seems normal. Until it isn’t.

The coworker starts to panic and gets Layla’s attention towards the window. A crashing plane is on fire! Layla is terrified as she doesn’t know what to do to help. But that’s when it happens, the bright pink electric shocks comes from her body and she successfully lands the plane! Not knowing what just happened or what to do, Layla is in a state of confusion. What just happened?

After the excitement dies down, Layla’s coworker asks her if she’d like to hang out that night. Layla, who isn’t excited about the idea, agrees. After that she heads home to clear her head, which is fair after all she’s gone through that day. Once she’s home, she turns on the TV and sees there’s an active hostage situation at a bank. What in the world is happening today? Layla has no idea what’s going on but she knows what she must do. It’s time to embrace her new found powers and be the hero the city needs.

The Writing

I really enjoyed the story as Layla is just a normal woman living a normal life, then someone extraordinary happens. Gary Jones writing Layla to feel like someone very relatable, and excels at it. But what I found to be so refreshing is that she willingly jumped into action, even though she was so new to her powers. In every sense of the word, Layla is a hero.

This did end on an interesting cliffhanger dealing with the coworker, so I’m really interested to see where that goes. Also, I can’t wait to see Layla learn how to properly use her powers as this was just her first day with them, and look at all she accomplished in one day!

The Art

The artists of the comic did a great job in showing just how larger than life Layla’s powers are. With the bright pink electric lightning bolts coming from her body, it makes a great contrast with everything else in the panels. Some of my favorite panels involved the plane crashing as you could really feel the terrifying energy through each page.
