“FOR ALL TIMES, ALWAYS! The Time Variance Authority has long watched over the timeline, protecting it from dangerous variations that could cause the end of EVERYTHING. Now, as the organization begins to expand its tolerance of variants, it’s enlisted some new recruits from timelines that have been wiped from existence: Captain Peggy Carter, Super-Soldier of her world; Gambit, despondent and aimless from the loss of his lady love; and… this can’t be right… Spider-Gwen?!? Has her world been destroyed?!? Writer Katharyn Blair (LOKI Season Two) and artist Pere Pérez (CARNAGE, SPIDER-WOMAN) bring a touch of cinematic flair to the bureaucracy at the end of time!”
The New Time Variance Authority
After the events of Marvel Studios’ Loki season 2, a TVA comic series seems like an obvious choice with the success Loki saw. What I didn’t expect was such a team made up characters that shouldn’t go together but somehow fit so well. Our new TVA is made up of characters such as Spider-Gwen, Gambit, O.B., and Mobius and each one brings something new to the team.
This all takes place after season 2 of Loki when our favorite trickster God changed the TVA for the better, giving us new comic characters that originally started in the show. Miss Minutes, O.B., and Hunter B-15 all came from the show, and O.B. is the only one who’s been in the comics yet. It was a joy seeing these characters in TVA #1, as they were some of the best parts of the Loki series.
In TVA #1, Peggy, AKA Captain Britain, shows up to the TVA with a very peculiar problem that looks like only the TVA can help her with. Peggy says that people from different timelines are having these strange “panic attacks” where they go into a trance and seeing their worst fears right in front of them. The strangest part of that is that these people who are going through this are seeing glimpses of the TVA and can even describe the TVA accurately. Of course, O.B. has a few ideas in mind, but the only way they can figure out what’s happening is to travel to these timelines and see for themselves.
The Writing
I found this to be a really fun start, especially with the team Katharyn Blair has put together. It was so much fun seeing the Loki characters finally get their stories in the comics, and I’m really excited to see where it goes. After reading Stephanie Phillips ongoing run, Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider, I was really hoping to see what happened with Gwen and the TVA, so I was already really excited to read this.
Blair does a great job making each character feel like their own while making them mesh really well as a team. With Hunter B-15, you can practically hear Wunmi Mosaku’s voice in her panels. When reading about Miss Minutes, it’s not hard to read her lines in her sassy southern accent. It’s all around a fun read and I’m really excited to see what’s next.
The Art
With a great storyline, you have to have a great artist behind the scenes to bring it all to life, and Pere Pérez is exactly that person. I love how he drew the characters, giving each one a chance to shine. With the Loki series characters, he did a fantastic job at drawing their comic counterpart while giving them that fictional look about them.
Something I really enjoyed was how Pérez used the facial expressions to convey the tone. You could see every emotion on the character’s faces perfectly throughout TVA #1.
