Something Wicked Grows in Medieval Spawn #1
Medieval Spawn #1 picks up as Spawn and his band of men come across a young man freezing to death in the wild. After warming him by the fire and feeding him, he reveals that he seeks help for his village. A plague has overtaken his home and now everyone he loves is a mindless, hungry demon. Spawn is skeptical until the boy reveals that a strange knight had arrived the night before. A knight that Medieval Pawn and his men have been hunting! What they find a horrific site. A nest of pure evil, and a corrupted knight at the center trying to bring a terrible evil into their realm!

Plot Execution is Key in Medieval Spawn #1
The plot by Rory McConville is simple yet effective. A great evil plagues an innocent village, and something much worse is trying to break through. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a fun ride and executed to perfection! We may spend only a small amount of time with some of the characters and yet we feel something when they fall. I believe that’s a credit to McConville’s dialogue. The pacing is great are the plot moves nicely. By the end of this issue, it’s clear that this is an origin for something else, possibly something fascinating and deep!
The Art of Medieval Spawn #1
The artwork in this issue is wonderful. The creature designs are awesome. Scale, proportions, and action are all on point. Clean line work, vibrant colors, and excellent lighting effects are visually pleasing. Spawn looks impressive and brings an intense vibe to every panel he’s on. The natural setting is immersive and sets the tone. All of these things make for a great experience and a professional look.
Violator Origin #5 Going Down to Hell and Back
Now, I’m just gonna say it: I wish it was dirtier! If that’s not quote worthy I don’t know what is! Let me explain. As well executed as everything is in this issue, I really wish there was a grittier, gorier, darker tone to it. I wanted to smell the artwork if that makes any sense. When cut in half the demons insides look like bubble gum. We do get some horror imagery and suspenseful moments, but blood comes at a premium. Gives us some METAL.
Overall Grade: 8/10
This was a fun read no matter what I may have said above. I like this as a foundation of where to go from here. It’s obvious that this is the beginning of a much more intricate and personal story arc and I’m here for it! The pacing is perfect and the panel layout is easy on the eyes and good for interaction. Watch out, because Medieval Spawn walks tall and carries a big sword! What did you guys think of issue #1?!
