Magus

Continuing learning about a Family member in each comic, in The Power Fantasy #5, we learn about Jacky Magus. Magus is a British punk who calls himself a cult leader as he calls his following a cult. His cult is called The Pyramid, as each level of clearance is on a pyramid format. The bottom tier is called the Initiates, then it climbs to the top with Ascended Initiates, then Lower Initiates of the Greater Third, Higher Initiates of the Greater Third, Arseholes, F*cking Arsholes, then at the very top, Jacky Magus, Total Arshole. Each tear has its own perks as different secrets are revealed to the members once they arrive to the new tier.

Magus has had big plans for The Pyramid such as wanting to save the world, but that didn’t quite pan out as the entirety of The Pyramid was “fried”. Magus, who needs new recruitments, has a new plan in mind, and it has to do with the White House.

The Writing

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times; the more I learn about the Family members, the more compelling the story is to me. Every Family member is so wildly different from the others and it makes the story more compelling. Magus is so gritty with a aging punkrocker energy, he made The Power Fantasy #5 a really interesting read. I’m really interested to see where Magus’ new plan leads to and what Etienne has to say about it!

The Art

I think Caspar Wijngaard did a great job capturing the grittiness of Magus, especially with the more muted flashbacks of Magus and the Pyramid. Something I think is underrated about The Power Fantasy is the amazing cover art that goes with each installment. Wijngaard captures the essence of each comic with his cover art, and this installment is no different.

Final Thoughts

The Power Fantasy has been so consistently entertaining, and only gets more compelling with each read. Kieron Gillen has really showcased his talents with this comic run.

9/10
