Building A New Lair

Cheetara is out on a scouting mission on the ThunderCats new home of Third Earth. She is also secretly trying to find Calica. Unfortunately, all she finds is Mu’Tants, more specifically Monkians. She ambushes one and gets the drop on their plans.

Meanwhile, at the site of where the new lair is being built, Panthro’s unique sight spots the Mu’Tants approaching. The ThunderCats bring the fight to the Monkian invaders and try to protect their new home. As that happens it is revealed that the mastermind of this attack is Slithe, who has his own plans for Lion-O.

ThunderCats #9 continues this wonderful new arc for the 1980’s icons known as the ThunderCats. Declan Shalvey does a great job of not only building a new world and story, but also keeping the characters familiar to longtime fans. The pacing of the story is impeccable and spreading the wealth amongst all the different characters makes them all feel important.

The art in this issue is top notch as well. Drew Moss does a great job with the character design. Keeping the characters recognizable, well also evolving the looks is really cool. Martina Pignedoli’s colors are great, and the pallet has a wide range. Finally, Jeff Eckleberry’s lettering jumps off the page and is easy to read the emotion in every panel.

Final Thoughts

ThunderCats #9 is a great piece of storytelling with amazing art. As the build for the ThunderCats to make this new planet a home continues, so doesn’t their challenges. This issue does a great job of bridging many gaps well keeping you guessing what’s next. This is a series that will be a welcomed addition to my Pull List.

Final Grade: 9/10
