WOLVERINE Deep Cut #4: Down Go the Baddies

In a story set during the Uncanny X-Men (between issues 246 and 251), Wolverine is trying to prevent the murderous birthday tradition that Sabretooth began for his favorite little runt years ago. However, in issue 1, he stumbled upon something else. He found what seemed like an endless supply of clones produced by Sinister. As Logan fought clone after clone, he finally got to the center of that tootsie pop in issue 3. Wolverine found the original group he had been fighting: The Marauders. Along with them was the one and only Sabretooth himself.

The Story for Issue 4

As we wrap up this 4 issue Uncanny X-Men side story, we expect an epic showdown between two very quickly healing mutants, that could literally last forever. Then we get a bit of a different showdown, with a twist. While Wolverine’s main goal throughout this series has been to get Sinister, the overall theme of issue 4 seemed to mainly take place in Logan’s internal dialogue. Logan’s struggle with hero verse villain is always there. He never seems to struggle with what to do. However, he does struggle with whether doing what needs to be done makes him a hero or a villain. Is there an evil out there that is so horrific it doesn’t deserve mercy? Steve Rogers may say no, but Wolverine has been around a bit longer.

This 4 issue story wraps up with a cliff hanger. However, it’s an old cliff hanger, that can be picked right up in Uncanny X-Men #251. If that issue doesn’t sound familiar, it’s the epic cover with Logan up on a giant X. Brought to life this summer in Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Art

There isn’t much I can say, that I haven’t already said about issues 1-3. I have loved this art from beginning to end. Whether there is an explosion, a brawl, a healing factor taking place, or simply a large SNIKT… the art has been X-Men art perfection. Fun, dark, and beautiful.

WOLVERINE Deep Cut #4 Rating 9/10

Whether you dust off the OG Uncanny X-Men comics, or jump right in on WOLVERINE Deep Cut #4, you’re destined to enjoy the story, and you’ll be caught right up before the fun begins… bub. However, this 4 issue story is going to make you want to dig out the Uncanny X-Men.

Any new or old school X-Men fan needs to add this one to the pull list. I’m absolutely loving Chris Claremont creating these Wolverine side quests that fill in the gaps for where he was 30+ years ago during the Uncany X-Men run. I give this one 9/10 cigars bub. SNIKT!
