Hard to believe we are on the next to last issue of this holiday horror comic created by James Tynion IV & Joshua Hixson. The copycat of the infamous Deviant Killer is still on the loose and still eluding the authorities. He seems to be one step ahead of everyone and time is running out for the man accused of these grizzly crimes. Is Michael guilty or is there an unseen puppet master pulling the strings?

***Minor Spoilers Possible***

Twas the Night Before Christmas

The Deviant #8 opens with the grizzly outcome of the last pages of the previous issue. We then go straight to the prison where Michael and the FBI Agent are having a little chat. Michael tells a story about his hardships of being a gay teenager. After their chat Michael appears as if he has given up, while the FBI Agent seems to have hope for him.

Michael’s lover Randall meets with Derek so they can try and help clear Michael. As they discuss this, it appears that Randall is now being set up as the killer’s accomplish, which the agent doesn’t believe. However, none of this may matter as The Deviant Killer looms in the background.

“I Want to Finish This”

James Tynion IV continues to weave this whodunit story and masterfully keeps you guessing. This book is a great blend of murder mystery and slasher story. Knowing that there is only one issue left has me chomping at the bit to find out how this story ends.

Joshua Hixson’s art is creepy, yet beautiful. It gives you a nostalgic Christmas feel, but with its dark colors and gloomy scenes it has a horror feel as well. The grizzly opening scene is next level and is on par with the most gruesome of slasher films out there.

Final Thoughts

As much as I am ready to see the conclusion of The Deviant, I’m sad that it is coming to an end. This book is one of my favorites to read each month. The Deviant #8 has set the table perfectly for the finale. Now all that is left for all of us is the wait to see how this ends.

Final Grade: 10/10
