Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of The Ultimates from Deniz Camp & Marvel!
Deniz Camp pens an incredible story of self reflection. It feels like a deep breath right before a plunge into the deep end of a pool. It features Dr. Doom planning with Iron Lad for the inevitable battle with The Maker, while he’s also reflecting on events that are very familiar to long time comic readers. But just what does it all mean? Let’s jump into it!
The Ultimates #4 by Deniz Camp (writer), Phil Noto (guest artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (letterer), Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon (cover artists) focuses on this universes Reed Richards who’s being visited by Iron Lad after missing from another mission.
All the while he’s being extremely reflective on the events that have lead him to this point in his life. It’s not the most action packed episode, but man is it a compelling story.

The flashback sequences should be very familiar to long time fans of the Fantastic Four. And the other flashback is just what The Maker did to turn Reed Richards into this universe’s Dr. Doom, and to be honest it’s a messed up origin story. But when you think about it a little bit, it’s The Maker and honestly it isn’t that surprising. And all the meanwhile in the present time, Doom is trying to work a miracle. But it’s a miracle the world needs for the battle ahead.
My favorite part of the issue is the backstory about what The Maker did to Reed Richards. It’s tragic, horrifying and sad. But that’s what makes it such a compelling part of the story. And it’s going to be interesting to see just how that effects Doom/Richards going forward. Because that’s a scar (metaphorically speaking) you don’t just walk away from.
FINAL POINT: Deniz Camp tells a masterful story that takes well established characters that have been around for almost 63 years and turns what you think you know about them on their head. This issue is going to be point you’re going to come back to in future issues as a moment to reflect on why Reed/Doom does what he does. And it is going to be incredible to see that play out.
