Crocodile Black by Boom! Comics

This comic is filled with trauma, family issues, loss, looking for connection, murder, and so much more. Danny is a very young adult who lost his brother at a young age, only to then live in the shadow of this loss his entire life. He’s forced to deal with a toxic father, while also dealing with a history of mental illness. He was already living a life of trauma and “seeing things” when he met Leo, the only person who he feels he can turn to. Leo was already dead when they met. Danny now turns to a corpse for guidance, as he literally steps into Leo’s crocodile boots, and reads his diary. Last we saw Danny he went somewhere that no one mentally comes back from.

The Story for Issue #4

This issue kicks off with Danny processing his first kill. He seems to be viewing this “self defense” in the darkest way possible. Regret seems to be lacking completely. Meanwhile, Danny is unaware that his journey of self discovery has completely confused law enforcement, and angered the local drug cartel. As Danny digs himself deeper into trouble, the trauma of his brother’s loss so long ago, may be the one thing keeping him alive today.

The Art

Throughout this series, the art has been absolutely dark and gorgeous. It brings life to both the literal and metaphorical monster that Danny has inside of him. We can visually see him dealing with his trauma and mental illness in such a unique and beautiful way. The last page made me gasp while feeling a sense of dread, but, oddly, it also  created a sense of calmness.

Crocodile Black #4 Rating: 9.5/10

There is more than one story going on in Crocodile Black. While, we learn more about Danny and see him deal with the monster inside, we’re also in the middle of a mob story. These two stories seem so different, but compliment each other so incredibly well. If you’re looking for a beautifully drawn and colored unique story about the cartel, childhood trauma, PTSD, crocodile boots, and more… add this comic to your pull list.
