WOLVERINE Deep Cut by Marvel Comics

Chris Claremont has been dusting off some Uncanny X-Men stories and adding more to them. He recently released WOLVERINE Madripoor Knights: a 5 issue spinoff of the Uncanny X-Men #268. WOLVERINE Deep Cut is now spinning off of issue #227. Much like Madripoor Knights, you don’t need to read a thirty year old comic to follow this story, but it definitely never hurts.

In issue 1 we saw Wolverine more than prepared for his birthday surprise from Sabretooth, who never forgets Logan’s special day. Unfortunately as Wolverine appears to finally take down his arch nemesis, he immediately realizes he’s a clone. Someone much bigger is behind Logan’s birthday surprise this year. Someone a bit more sinister.

The Story for Issue 2

Issue 2 kicks off with Wolverine still healing from his fight with a Sabretooth clone, as he prepares for what to do next. In a beautiful montage as Logan becomes whole again, he introduces the audience to the Marauders. A group of mutant killing mutants who work for Sinister himself. Logan is after Sinister for his involvement in his birthday celebration this year. So, he goes after the Marauders to get to who he really wants.

The Art

This issue continues to show some beautifully detailed action scenes with a sense of calmness at times. The mutant abilities of the Marauders are incredibly unique, and they are portrayed perfectly on paper. From a beautifully colored cyclone to an incredibly misshapen Wolverine, this is definitely not your average fight. However, Wolverine is not your average X-Men.

WOLVERINE Deep Cut #2  9/10

All in all these Uncanny spinoffs are such a fun way to revisit some old comics, with some fresh new stories. Between these spinoffs, and some recent scenes in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (no spoilers), there is no better time than the present to start picking up some old and new comics! Chris Claremont has been writing Wolverine longer than Hugh Jackman has been playing him (almost 2 decades longer), and he knows Logan inside and out. This story is everything you know, love, and expect from a Wolverine story. I got to give this one 9/10 cigars. Can’t wait to see how it all wraps up. SNIKT!
