Good versus Evil.
Father Vieri and Legion.
The Final showdown.
That is what DAVID PEOPOSE, Alex Cormack and Justin Birch (Credit: MAD CAVE STUDIOS) have been building towards with their ambitious story “THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE“. Readers have watched as an exorcism has gone awry. The Vatican is in shambles. Cardinal Pentecost is gone. Now standing over the chaos is Legion. The world around Verdi is burning. Can he stop the fire before it’s too late?
The Writing:
Pepose has been challenging the normal possession story flawlessly thus far. The conflict between Vieri and Legion has transcended into a personal mission. With everything Legion has thrown at Vieri, there’s been no stopping of his spirit.
The action is paced out great that the reveals hit their marks. There are some great surprises thrown into the mix. Vieri is not unprepared in his final showdown. Readers will be caught up in the action not to see them coming directly. The big reveal that changes everything is impactful and ignites the final act. At this stage, there’s nothing left in the tank as Pepose unloads the arsenal bringing events to a thunderous conclusion. The epilogue is fitting and leaves fans wondering if this might be the last time we see Father Vieri or just the beginning. It leans into the true horror aspect which has been a model for the series, which has delivered on each outing.
THE ART!
Cormack and Birch go heavy into the dark aspect of Legion’s visions with the finale. There is a striking full page of Legion “sitting on his throne” as Hell is on Earth. This kicks off the eventual showdown which does not disappoint. There is a fair amount of full page panels that exemplify the conflict. This especially stands out with Vieri and Legion unleashing their best shots at victory. The back to back splashes elevates the stakes that much higher.
The issue’s big reveal comes off as enormous as it should be. The art team incases the emotional release it causes. Readers will take a pause then see how the reveal changes the course of the story. The panel usage for the fight closing is a strong dynamic. The event feels as large and powerful as a finale should be. The closing images bring everything to a solid end for now, but maybe not forever.
FINAL GRADE: 9
With a even balance of horror and action, the final standoff between Father Vieri and Legion gives fans a memorable sendoff. Pepose raises the stakes with excellent writing. Cormack and Birch go above and eyond with the imagery to bring out the best and darkest of Hell on Earth. This will be one not to miss at the shops for sure.
