The Story:
After defeating the Ashen Combine and surviving the Twilight Court, The Avengers are left wondering how to handle their new prisoners. While they discuss, Edwin Jarvis arrives to teach The Impossible City what it means to serve Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!
The Writing:
A few things about the writing in this issue need to be highlighted. First off, it was a real breath of fresh air to see this take. The Avengers discussing a difference of opinion with mutual respect and not condescension and anger.
The debate on what to do with the Ashen Combine stood out. How The Avengers should handle the situation happening with the X-Men right now was incredibly well written.
Both Tony and Carol had good points. At no point, did they seem like they were going to come to blows. What a thought, teammates can disagree without starting a fist fight.
The second issue was the handling of Vison and the Scarlet Witch and Thor and Black Panther’s relationships. Both sets of characters had a quick and entertaining conversation that was fun to read. As a long time fan, it fit all four characters perfectly. Jed MacKay is continuing to handle this group with ease.
While a lesser storyteller would lean into the contentious nature of some of these relationships, MacKay is taking the much more interesting step towards treating this people like adults who can have disagreements and still work together.
All of those wonderful points and I haven’t even mentioned Jarvis! Edwin Jarvis is the unsung hero of The Avengers and it really shows here. His explanation of the role that he plays was a beautiful sentiment.
The Art:
The art team got a chance to flex their muscles here. Characters in costume and out, a futuristic city learning to cook, and growing and merging plastic Man-Slayers!
The colors and line work were on point and the action was spot on. Fantastic work once again!
The Verdict: 9/10
Any story involving Edwin Jarvis gets a few points to begin with. However, I’m happy to say that this issue would have gotten by on it’s own merit.
I am really excited to see where this story leads. The Avengers is a great place to get a good villain of the week story with an intriguing over arching storyline.
