Let the Battle Royale Begin
The small town of Oak Valley doesn’t know the horror that is about to embark on it. As the sheriff has been paid off to leave the town in the hands of some sinister elites. Every 5 years the 13 most powerful families, who represent the original 13 colonies, send a killer to compete on their behalf in a fight to the death. The killer that survives the night gains the leadership position for the family they represent for the next 5 years.
The unsuspecting citizens of Oak Valley don’t realize they are in danger this Halloween night. But soon their lives will be on the line as they will be stuck in the crossfire from the brutal battle royale that has been set in motion. Who will be able to survive the night? What killer will come out on top? And what family will seize power of the shadow government?
There Can be Only One
This first issue lays down the groundwork for what’s to come in this series. You are introduced to the 13 families, the 13 killers, and our group of unsuspecting towns people. The basic outline of the game is also laid out, so you understand it, but it leaves some things open for surprises later. James Tynion IV does a fantastic job of laying down this groundwork and setting the expectations for where this series is going to go.
The art in this initial issue is fantastic. The character designs and settings are great. But the thing that stands out the most is the unique design of each killer. Michael Walsh gives special details and personalities to each killer. The gore and violence are very effective and portrayed in a creative way. The color palette used by Jordie Bellaire really brings it all together and draws your eye to every panel.
