Avengers: Twilight #1
Writer – Chip Zdarsky
Artist – Daniel Acuna
Letterer – VC’s Cory Petit
Cover – Alex Ross and Daniel Acuna
PUBLISHER:
MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT
The Story:
In a seemingly beautiful and gleaming world, Captain America is no more. Steve Rogers is still here, living in an America where freedom is an illusion and truth is made up for better ratings. The world needs Captain America, can Steve step back in to that role and assemble The Avengers once again?
The Writing:
Chip Zdarsky weaves a beautiful tale of sadness and desperation in this first issue. Steve’s inner monologue and his interactions with the people around him is a wonderful reflection of who this character is. The narrative here is one that is all too familiar to a modern reader, news media and corporations steering public perception of truth. Zdarsky has introduced a world that is a fun house mirror of our own and has chosen the perfect person to be the audience’s eyes in Steve Rogers. The little teases throughout this issue that hints at how the world could have ended up this way were perfectly dropped like breadcrumbs that I will happily follow. Chip Zdarsky is making magic in these pages.
The Art:
Daniel Acuna’s art is transcendent. It perfectly captures the aesthetic and tone of the story. Steve Rogers, Luke Cage, and Matt Murdock are believably aged and broken and James Stark oozes arrogance. The reveal at the raft is one that will haunt me for quite some time… This art is beautifully rendered and elevates the story to the next level! Of course I cannot talk about the artwork in this issue without mentioning the fantastic cover from Acuna and Alex Ross, beautiful!
The Verdict: 10/10
Avengers: Twilight feels like it is going to be a book that is discussed for years to come. The social commentary, incredible art, and hopeful final page makes this one for the ages. Top all of that off with a wonderful back up story and behind the scenes look and this was truly a breath of fresh air. This is what comics are about!
