Sorcerer Supreme #6 – Chaos Clothed In Good Deeds

Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme has saved her friend, Agatha Harkness. Agatha, held under a uroath, was forced to fight her friend on behalf of the Vishanti. Having fended off the Vishanti, Wanda has now left her friend under the protection of Archimago, the caretaker of London’s Sanctum Sublimium. Agamatto warned that the Vishanti were too focused on Wanda. The original Sorcerer Supreme warned that the focus on Wanda could spell trouble not just for the Vishanti but the world….

Writing

Megan: Wanda’s life as the new Sorcerer Supreme is anything but easy. She’s unable to make any moves without them being criticized. Even if it’s something as simple as ensuring that the people of Earth all have a good day. On this particular day, Wanda put a hex on the planet that will guarantee that everyone’s day will be met with luck and magic. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished as the In-Betweener has some choice words for her. This is one of many examples of how Wanda having the title of Sorcerer Supreme sits unwell with many magical beings. However, Wanda doesn’t allow that to deter her.

After the meeting with the In-Betweener, Wanda receives an emergency message from her son Billy asking for help. As any good mother would do, she drops what she’s doing and heads to him immediately. Billy is in his dreamscape, where Nightmare has attacked him. Seeing that this is much more than he can handle, he calls on Wanda for help. With the help of the King of Dreams, Somnus, the three must take down Nightmare. It’s easier said than done, especially since Nightmare has a few magical tricks up his sleeve.

Shawn: What if everything just went right for once? That’s not only what we are introduced to in this issue of Sorcerer Supreme, but probably the mantra for Wanda Maximoff during her time as Sorceress Supreme. I think at this point, Wanda would just settle for encountering someone in the mystical realm other than Stephen and Clea Strange, who don’t nitpick every decision she makes. Wanda always seems to find herself on the short end of the stick but always meets resistance when she finally tries to tip the scales back.

The introduction of the Extinction King was beautiful. I also really loved that, despite being a Wanda-centered comic, we got to see an example of how Billy has grown into his own, taking on powerful entities. I truly appreciated the use of Nightmare and Somnus. While some have jumped into the comments to critique the lack of respect for established canon, I love that Steve Orlando is taking chances. The lore is shifting, it’s deepening, and it’s being used in new creative ways. Love it or hate it, that’s how stories evolve and move beyond the same kind of story being told over and over again with the same character.

Art

Sorcerer Supreme #6 cover by Lesley Li. Image from Marvel Comics.

Megan: Bernard Chang, Von Randal, Ruth Redmond, and Joe Sabino make this issue a magically dark story with the perfect amount of mystical action. Chang and Randal bring drawings that capture the depth of the story very well. Magical powersets are put on full display, which are illustrated in an absolutely stunning way. Along with Chang and Randal, Ruth Redmond handles the coloring.

Redmond leaves their mark in everything they work on with gorgeous vibrant colors that make the story feel larger than life. In Sorcerer Supreme #6, that’s precisely what was done, while juxtaposing the much more darker tones. Joe Sabino handles the lettering and is able to bring the differing tones from the characters out excellently. There’s many different tones here, like an ominous tone, or a feisty or confident tone, that allows the readers to experience the story in a deeper way that Sabino captured perfectly.

Shawn: Bernard Chang and Von Randal owe me a jar of melatonin. The Wanda-Faced Owl will be in my nightmares for weeks to come. While beautifully drawn and colored, that thing was nightmare fuel. I thought the art on the Extinction King was simply superb. The character comes onto the scene with art befitting a major player in the game, and that is a testament to this art team. Bernard Chang, Von Randal, and Ruth Redmond did some unique things in this issue.

One highlight of the issue for me was some of the shifts in color palettes we got to see from Ruth Redmond. Somnus and Nightmare provided some really cool contrasts, such as Redmond contrasting the warm purple hues of Somnus against the dark subdued greens of Nightmare. Joe Sabino gets an SFX moment that echoes the infamous Doom vs Thanos moment in Secret Wars (2015), that sends a shiver up my spine. This art team perfectly captures the mystical aspects of this story.

Final Thoughts

Megan: 8.8/10. I’m a sucker for a Wanda and son team up and I think it was done well here. Wanda continues to prove why she’s the rightful Sorcerer Supreme and I can’t wait to see what’s next for her.

Shawn: 9/10. This was such a satisfying team-up. With Wiccan’s limited series ending, you knew Billy would show up here, but it was done in a way that gave us an interesting story and some beautiful visuals. I continue to love the idea of Wanda having a council to guide her despite all the opposition to her even being Sorceress Supreme.

Overall Grade: 8.9/10

X-MEN UNITED #3 – From the Past to the Present

Creative Team – Eve L. Ewing, Tiago Palma, Brian Reber, VC’s Joe Sabino, Stefano Caselli, Federico Blee

Published by Marvel Comics

Catch up with X-Men United #2!

The Story

This comic review is brought to you by the dynamic duo of Megan and Shawn!

Shawn – Eve L. Ewing gave us a little bit of everything in this issue. There were serious moments and even moments of humor. I didn’t have Magneto being a source of humor on my bingo card but thanks to Dr. Ewing. I love that despite all he’s seen, Cap still wants to resort to trying to talk things out.

I always appreciate when a writer surprises me. I really felt like I had a bead on where this story was going and Dr. Ewing pulled the rug out from under me with Cap’s conversation. This story was gut-wrenching and tough to read, but more true than any fiction in the comic. Dr. Ewing’s sociological background really shown in this issue and it was a beautiful thing to see.

Cover art by Stefano Caselli and Federico Blee. Published by Marvel Comics

Megan – A team was formed to assist Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, in righting a wrong from his past, but things played out in a completely different way than planned. The goal of the plan was to track down victims from way back when the Super-Soldier experiments were changing the lives of good men to make more Captain Americas. Cap was hoping to make amends, and the team was going to help him achieve that goal. Jitter, Wolverine, Melee, and Cap made their way to the house and didn’t know what to expect, but it sure wasn’t an attack from a mutant.

This wasn’t any ordinary mutant. This was a mutant fueled by anger and hatred from his past. Looking back into his past, it’s very easy to emphasize with his hatred. The story was raw, it was emotional, and it was beautifully written by Eve Ewing. So far, X-Men United has been fantastic, which isn’t a surprise given Ewing’s writing talents. Each issue has had a different energy to it, and this one was easily the most heartbreaking.

The Art

Shawn – Tiago Palma come on down! Absolutely amazing work on this issue. Palma really got to show the depth of his abilities on this issue. Ewing’s narrative had Palma drawing across a variety of settings, timelines, and emotions, with the artist capturing them all beautifully.

The narrative shift that occurs near the middle of this issue wouldn’t be possible without the amazing work of Brian Reber. The step back in history limited the color palette Reber could work with to stay within the narrative and he absolutely crushed it. From the first panel to the last, Reber’s colors are front and center bringing depth and light to the story. Joe Sabino gets a workman’s load of SFX work in this issue but also does a noteworthy job of navigating the shifting timelines in this issue while still keeping the story on track.

Megan – The artwork matches the tone of the comic so perfectly, all thanks to Tiago Palma, Brian Reber, and Joe Sabino. With the flashbacks, the artists did a fantastic job at capturing the emotions of the story. The sadness, the grief, the worry, all beautifully handled. The action sequences were filled with excitement, with each character being able to show their strengths.

Tiago Palma continues to hit a homerun with every issue of X-Men United. Palma captures a huge amount of depth on every page, elevating the story. Brian Reber handles the coloring and does so in a way that mixes the muted tones with vibrancy that makes the characters stand out on every page. Joe Sabino is the letterer of X-Men United #3 and carries the dialogue with an excellent flow while the character’s tones are perfectly displayed through their words. Together, the artists made this another superb issue.

Final Thoughts

Shawn – 9/10. I wasn’t really sure about bringing Cap in so early in the story of the new X-Men United, but Dr. Eve L. Ewing handled it perfectly. You can clearly tell Ewing’s passion for history and how it forms us in this issue. Tiago Palma, Brian Reber, and Joe Sabino bring the story to life making you feel the weight and depth of Ewing’s words.

Megan – 10/10. X-Men United continues to impress as we see new stories and new team ups coming together with the excitement at an all time high.

Overall Grade – 9.5/10

PREDATOR BLOODSHED #4: Revenge is a Dish

There is nowhere to hide from the monstrous Yautja, and the rich elite are finding that out the hard way! As one member’s motives for fighting are revealed, the Yautja is on a war path with nothing to stop him. The penultimate issue sets the stage for one final battle in a winner-takes-all.

Comic book cover: Predator grappling with a muscular human amid ice shards, title 'Predator: Blooded,' issue 4 badge at top-right, Marvel logo bottom-right.
Predator Bloodshed #4. Credit Marvel Comics. Cover by Ken Lashley.

Creative Team: Jordan Morris, Boschi, Ruairi Coleman, Reese Hannigan, Dee Cunniffe, Andrew Cramer, VC’s Clayton Cowles, and Ken Lashley.

The Story:

Fewer things can be more satisfying than watching some rich scumbag get violently murdered, I tell you. Jordan makes each death in this issue feel satisfying in different ways. When the Yautja arrive and tear apart the watching party, we cannot help but cheer and be engaged, as turkey isn’t the only thing that is being served up on a platter at this event! However, we switch gears and sympathize as Jakob’s quest for revenge is revealed for his lost partner. He puts up a valiant fight and gets some solid hits in before biting the dust himself. I truly have no idea who will survive this as we head into the final issue, and Morris has done an incredible job at delivering on the fun!

The Art and Letters:

The art team gets to have more fun in this issue as they find creative ways to showcase some deaths. We get a member’s head severed and a panel where it lands next to the turkey in a hilarious sequence. The team displays the Yautja’s array of weapons, including his wrist blades and even his shoulder canon, leading to a brutal death as well. When Jakob and the Yautja fight, there is a heaviness to the punches, and we even saw the green blood spray out vibrantly. They seem to be having a ton of fun working on this run, and it shows!

Final Thoughts:

Predator Bloodshed #4 gives us both satisfying fight and kill sequences and some real oh crap moments as the Yautja is a tank that just will not stop. We are set up for an epic finale with no idea who will come out alive!

DEATHSTROKE THE TERMINATOR #3: Death Comes in Threes

Deathstroke finds himself in the crosshairs of Deadshot and Deathblow, as there is a code amongst mercenaries that Slade has broken. Now to get to the truth behind who killed his friend Wintergreen, Wilson must battle two familiar faces. Is he up to the task, or will revenge consume him?

Deathstroke The Terminator #3. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Carmine Di Giandomenico.

Creative Team: Tony Fleecs, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ivan Plascenencia, and Wes Abbott.

Tony certainly knows how to crank up the intensity, and my goodness, does he ever in this issue. Deathstroke is becoming more unhinged in ways I have never seen him before. He is always collected and methodical; however, we are seeing him frantic and not thinking clearly for the first time. The inclusion of Deadshot and Deathblow adds more chaos to the mix, as they taunt both Slade and the reader about who killed Wintergreen throughout this issue.

Tony builds up the reveal and anticipation masterfully, and at times, I was even shouting to tell me who the killer was. There’s the inclusion of flashbacks, which set rules and codes that I thoroughly enjoyed, as they build out the world, and it includes some characters we don’t see often, such as KGBeast. Slade is an absolute tank, and the reveal of Wintergreen’s killer on the final page hits us in the chest like a bullet from Deadshot. This run just keeps getting better and better.

To match the energy of this issue, the art brings the chaos, and every panel leaves your heart racing and leaping from your chest. As I mentioned, Slade is a tank, and the team has him taking hits left and right. Deathblow hits Slade in the back, and then we see an excellent panel after Wilson takes a point-blank shot to the face, revealing his broken mask and his eye. The detail in just Slade’s eye, which is all we can see, shows how desperate he is and tells so much of what he feels inside.

When art can deliver like that, you know we have an all-timer cooking. Wes’ lettering aids in showing the differences between Slade and his two foes. Slade’s voice is desperate and almost a gravely high-pitched sound as he is shouting, and yet you can sense how much calmer Deadshot is when he speaks. It’s the subtle shifts like this that drew me in deeper and kept the mystery going.

Deathstroke The Terminator #3 is chaos in the best way. We’ve never seen Slade Wilson this desperate and unhinged before, and Tony is unveiling a twisted plot full of surprises. The art team is crushing the details and making every blow Slade takes feel heavy and painful. This run continues to get better and better each issue!

SIRENS: LOVE HURTS #4 – When a Plan Comes Together

Creative Team – Tini Howard, Babs Tarr, Miquel Muerto, Becca Carey

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with Sirens: Love Hurts #3!

The Story

After all the build up, all the planning, all the investigating, the Sirens are ready to take down Horoscope. With Horoscope making sacrifices of innocent female civilians all over town, the Sirens knew that they had to plan fast. Getting a good look at her calendar, the Sirens knew exactly when Horoscope would act, and it just so happens to be the day of Dinah’s wedding. When they called Dinah’s wedding day the “big day” I’m sure this isn’t what they had in mind.

Cover art by Babs Tarr. Published by DC Comics

In the conclusion of this miniseries, Tini Howard brings the story to a satisfying and exciting close. There’s so much to love in Sirens: Love hurts #4. Different dynamics, relationships blooming, emotions revealed, and teamwork so good that it makes you want to see these women work together again.

Throughout this comic run, we’ve seen the unlikely Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Black Canary work together, even through their ups and downs. By the end of the run, there’s genuine love and respect between the team that shines brightly on the pages. Tini Howard has knocked this miniseries out of the park and I would absolutely love to see her return to write for the Sirens again.

The Art

When you have a fabulous story, then you have to have fabulous artwork, and that’s exactly what Babs Tarr, Miquel Muerto, and Becca Carey delivered. Each page has a whimsical feeling to it, that adds to the charm of the characters. The drawings are beautifully done on each and every page. The panels are well detailed while leaving nothing to the imagination, which really sells the story. In every issue of Sirens: Love Hurts, the colors have been stunning to say the least, and this issue is no exception. Each page is filled with vibrancy and gorgeous focal points. It goes with the tones of the story extremely well, letting the reader feel the tone of the story through the artwork. Becca Carey handles the lettering and expertly leads with emotion, allowing the reader to feel every feeling the characters have.

Final Thoughts

As bummed as I am that the series is over, I cannot say enough how wonderful the ending was. The creative team stuck the landing and I can’t wait to see what they do next!

Nectar #3 – By Fire and Blood

Color Artist: Steve Canon
Letterer: Jim Campbell
Cover Artist: Chris Shehan

Writing

Jeremy Robinson continues to stun with each issue of Nectar. The science vs religion argument really reached a fever pitch in this issue. While this is clearly an atmospheric horror-style story, it felt like Robinson really took it to another level with this issue. It feels infinitesimally darker than the previous two issues of Nectar.

This issue really felt like Robinson had something to say, and a megaphone was the best source to do it. Robinson leans into the setting of the story, crafting a new thread in the common Salem-related narratives in a way that feels unique. The result was an issue of Nectar that felt truly dark and horrifying while being narratively satisfying. With this being the penultimate issue of the series, I can’t wait to see how Robinson wraps everything up.

Art

Nectar #3 cover by Chris Shehan. Image from Vault Comics

As great as the story of Nectar has been, its the work of Annapaola Martello, Francesco Francini, Steve Canon, and Jim Campbell that brings Nectar to life. The art team perfectly captures the essence of the setting. Martello and Francini truly spare no detail with their line work. Whether it’s the collected strands of Pastor Grant’s hair or the threads on a simple piece of rope anchoring a boat to a tree, every line feels purposeful and deliberate.

Steve Canon really shines in this issue. His continued use of a more dour and muted palette really allows a significant impact when those pops of color appear. While the palette has made the butterflies the stars of the show in the previous two issues, other action takes center stage with fire, blood, and even gore jumping off the page through Canon’s coloring. Letterer Jim Campbell does a spectacular job with SFX as well as moving the story forward with easy-to-follow word bubbles.

Final Thoughts

What a breathtaking issue Nectar #3 was. This series has been simply phenomenal. Robinson takes historical events and weaves pieces of them through a new and creative narrative that adds a creative touch to horror comics. I find myself genuinely sad that this is the penultimate issue of Nectar. I would read so many more issues of this comic series. The art team ironically breathes life into this story about death in a way that really shows their abilities and talent.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #8 – Infested

Shredder lands in Tokyo to bring an end to a situation that he is the root cause of. Making TMNT fans feel a certain level of remorse towards Shredder. As well as “rooting” for Shredder!

Creative Team

Dan Watters (Writer), Sid Kotian (Artist), Marco Lesko (Colorist), Darran Robinson (Letterer)

Tommy Stella (Assistant Editor), Jake Thomas (Editor)

Publisher: IDW Publishing

Infested

Issue eight of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder builds off of the events that happened in issues six and seven of this series. Building off of previous characters and creating new characters in the process. This series gives readers a different portrayal of the iconic TMNT villain, Shredder. Some readers may have a mix of split emotions with this new story dynamic. But give it a chance!

Shredder
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder #8, Credit IDW Publishing. Cover by Mateus Santolouco.

This issue follows Shredder on his mission of correcting a mistake he made within his recent past. On this mission he is essentially on his own as he is no longer the leader of the Foot Clan. With that loss of power, he is strictly striking fear into his enemies with his reputation. This is amazing to see especially when it comes to the newly formed criminal organization that is trying to take over. Essentially ran by “young bucks” who are not familiar with Shredder. That is until some of the veteran criminals attempt to explain what they have potentially started: a war with Shredder.

One of the complex aspects of this new criminal organization is the dark science they are using as a method of control. This gives off a similar feel to the tactics of Waller and the Suicide Squad from DC. This is used by the organization to make their “soldiers” comply to their commands. One ounce of hesitation and their time within the organization and on this planet is over…

This series shines an entirely new light on Shredder as a character! TMNT fans are religiously accustomed to Shredder being the villain as the leader of the Foot Clan. Within this series readers will take in an older man, who has lost his mantle over the Foot Clan and is on his own. But after making a terrible mistake and losing the love of his life, Shredder has made a small alteration to his persona. He is slowly morphing into a hero within this series. Strange to see, but it is becoming very entertaining to read!

The Writing

Dan Watters is doing an amazing job with this story! The writing for this issue dives deeper into the story of the criminal organization that is trying to eliminate Shredder. The dialogue exchanges are simple yet very direct. The script for this story is so enticing that readers will get entangled within the pages wanting to know more!

The Artwork

Sid Kotian and Marco Lesko are a dynamic duo for this series! The pencil work and coloration really go hand in hand with each other. Clean lines and vibrant colors help to highlight the amazing details that are intertwined within the panels. Very well done!

Darran Robinson‘s lettering for this issue is very well done! Changes in fonts and sizing add to dramatized narration making emotion easy for readers to interpret. Placement of narration and dialogue is spot on as well! Great work!

Variant Covers

  • Comic book cover: a large black armored figure is seen from behind, facing a neon-lit alleyway filled with blue, zombie-like mutants; bold logo spans the top with issue details on the left.

Final Thoughts

This is really an interesting take on Shredder the character! The back story given about his mistake and the path in which he is going down to fix it transforms him into somewhat of a hero, and I’m enjoying that! I did have to go back and read previous issues of this series to catch up on the events that have taken place, and I’m glad I did. There is so much more to this story and readers should look into getting the earlier issues to get the entire scope it! Go pick up TMNT: Shredder, from your local shop today!

END OF LIFE #4 – No One is Safe

Creative Team – Kyle Starks, Steve Pugh, Chris O’Halloran, Gerald Parel

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with End of Life #3!

The Story

In the explosive fourth issue of End of Life, the energy is turned up a few notches in the town of Pluto. The Menagerie is right on Eddie’s tail, even showing up at his father’s house looking for him. His father, George, has to put together a plan on the fly to protect his son, but is very aware that this is a trained killer looking for Eddie.

Cover art by Gerald Parel. Published by DC Comics

Meanwhile, Eddie is in the town of Pluto when an announcement is made over a megaphone of someone looking for him. If Eddie doesn’t bring himself to the gas station to face a reckoning, then the bear-headed stranger will start killing people in the town of Pluto.

This has to be the most exciting issue of the run, which is saying something because I’ve loved this run up and down. Kyle Starks does an excellent job at keeping the energy high, especially between the scene changes. You’re instantly hooked into the story by the first page and left wanting to read more by the end. This continues the very high quality work that Starks has put into End of Life!

The Art

Steve Pugh and Chris O’Halloran continue to impress with their work in End of Life with the fourth issue. Perfectly capturing the high emotions of the comic, Steve Pugh is able to illustrate this through the facial expressions of the characters. Eddie is always extremely expressive, but who stands out here are the villains. You can see the unhinged spirit of Eddie’s villains just oozing out of them through their faces. Chris O’Halloran does extremely well with having a juxtaposition of vibrancy against the muted tones of Pluto, which brings a lot of depth to the pages. The vibrancy heats up at the same speed as the action, and it raises the energy even higher.

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t checked out End of Life yet, there’s no time like the present! The characters are compelling, the story is full of depth, and you’ll find yourself anxiously waiting for the next issue to drop by the end of the comic.

Overall Grade – 10/10

ABSOLUTE FLASH #15: Warning Signs

A Warning from the future, egotistical scientists gone missing, and his dad still lost on top of it, Wally West has his work cut out for him if he is to find the answers to the mystery that has been laid at his feet. With the help of Linda, his first clue is S.T.A.R. Labs in Detroit. Is he ready for what he’s about to uncover?

Absolute Flash #15. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Nick Robles.

Creative Team: Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles, Adriano Lucas, and Tom Napolitano.

The Story:

The Absolute Universe just expanded in so many ways in one issue, and my excitement levels could not be higher! Kicking off the issue, I love when Flash introduces time travel, and we get our look at the Black Flash with a stark warning from future Wally about the destruction they will cause if they don’t stop their search for their dad. It almost feels as though Jeff may be inching us towards a sort of flashpoint event in the future with Wally’s obsession with finding his dad, and I am extremely intrigued as to where that all leads. Not only do we get that, but Jeff drops Silas Stone and Ray Palmer into the mix with hints of Cyborg, and it instantly made my day. Barry working with these scientists and their hubris leading to something sinister is weirdly enough exciting.

I cannot forget that it was Jeff who brought the Rogues back into the fold as well. Living on a farm, I wish I had Weather Wizards’ powers to save me money on water. Anyways, I wasn’t prepared for Rick Flagg to find them and pull them out of hiding. A lot happens in this issue setting up so many futures it’s hard to not be ecstatic.

Art and Letters:

Lucas and Robles flash hints at some of our character designs by showing Ray Palmer in his Atom suit through a hologram, and it looks fantastic. Not only that, but when Wally enters S.T.A.R. Labs, it appears we see a tease of Cyborg as well. I’m enjoying the fresh takes on these designs and familiar characters, and they even deliver a familiar but notably older Wally in the opening panels. While this issue is not as flashy in terms of color work like we are used to, I enjoy the change of pace and world-building the team crafts through their artwork.

Final Thoughts:

Absolute Flash #15 expands the Absolute Universe in ways I wasn’t ready for. We are deep in the mystery behind what Barry and Wally’s dad were helping Thawne build, and it’s taking us to some familiar faces as we follow the trail. The hype train is now boarding, and we are ready to depart, as I am beyond excited with where we are headed.

A Stroke of Genius Saved a Life, and Gave Supernatural Fans over a Decade of Laughs

A stroke can impact anyone of any age, and reaction time is key to saving a life. May is Stroke Awareness Month, and there is no better time to celebrate a friendship that spawned from Supernatural conventions and the archangel Gabriel saving the life of Chuck, AKA God.

If you’re a fan of the series Supernatural that ran for 327 episodes and 15 seasons, then you’ve probably been to or heard of the conventions celebrating this amazing series. They literally had an episode where Sam and Dean show up at a Supernatural Convention. Well back in 2013 at an actual convention Rob Benedict, who plays Chuck – AKA God – on the show, suddenly showed signs of a stroke. Richard Speight Jr., who played Gabriel (and Loki in a later episode), recognized what was happening and got him the medical help he needed, thereby saving his life.

This moment brought them closer than they’ve ever been, and led to the launch of the campaign, “Getting By With a Little Help,” which donates to the National Stroke Association. It also led to some fun and hilarious projects including Kings of Con, and the Supernatural podcast: SPN Then and Now.

Kings of Con

If you’re a fan of Supernatural, fan conventions, self deprecation, or simply comedy, then Kings of Con is definitely worth checking out. There are 10 short episodes featuring Rob and Rich as parodies of themselves. While they may be the stars of Kings of Con, many other Supernatural characters show up too. While some are also parodies of themselves, some are completely random characters. I had to do a double take when I realized Abaddon from the show (Alaina Huffman) was playing Rob’s soon to be ex-wife.

I recently binged the whole thing, and it is absolutely hilarious. It’s a parody, with real life inspiration, on what goes on behind the scenes of a fan convention. I was laughing from the first scene to the last, and suddenly found myself even more hyped for the upcoming Supernatural convention in Orlando this September. It’s definitely not CW rated, so expect some colorful language, dick jokes (not the Leviathan kind), and a ton of cameos. Not just Supernatural ones. My only complaint was, I wanted more.

This crowd funded series dropped a decade ago, and can be streamed on Apple TV, Prime Video, and YouTube. While the series was sadly short lived, there is also a Kings of Con podcast that is a ton of fun. This was actually a covid baby that began as a podcast called, And My Guest Is Richard Speight. Five years later they’ve renamed it Kings of Con, and they’re still going strong.

SPN Then and Now Podcast

The ultimate podcast for any Supernatural fan is the SPN Then and Now Podcast! While both Rob and Rich starred on Supernatural throughout its run (Rich even directed quite a few episodes), they never sat down and actually watched the show. Well now they are. Each episode of this podcast is focused on an episode of the show. They kick off with a recap, review, and a rating. Then they have a guest who was involved in that episode. From actors, to directors, music, lighting… I started listening for the fun facts, and I never imagined I would learn so much about what goes into making a television series. They then wrap with fun facts, mythology, credits, and bloopers.

While I love learning behind the scenes facts and stories, my favorite moments of the SPN Then and Now podcast are those times where I hear both of them genuinely giggling at the other. They may be great actors, but best friend giggles can’t be faked like that. However, the podcast never makes you feel like you’re out of the loop, but more so part of it. We’re watching them become the fans we’ve been for years, and it’s a ton of fun!

Music Can Be Healing

While a web series and a couple podcasts can be traced back to Rob’s stroke, humor and friendship are not the only ways he moved forward. He also documented his recovery musically. If you’ve been to a Supernatural con, then you’ve likely seen Rob perform with his band, Louden Swain. Their 2014 album Sky Alive, is a result of his journey through recovery.

Rob is not the only one with musical talents. Rich himself has been known to sing at a con, and with his own band, Dick Jr. & the Volunteers. The musical talent from the actors in Supernatural is uncanny. However, coming from a show with music playing a big part, it all seems poetic. It’s also inspired many fans musically as well.

If you love music and Supernatural, a beautiful series was created by Denim Wrapped Nightmares and the In Defense of Fandom podcasts showcasing music in and inspired by the show: SPN20 Music Extravaganza. They interviewed so many musically talented actors from the show (including Rob and Rich), as well as musicians involved in the conventions, and fans that have created music based on and inspired by the series.

Saving People, Recording Podcasts, the Supernatural Family Business

Looking back on everything that has happened since his stroke Rob recently said, “They say a stroke changes your life, but they don’t tell you it can bring you closer to the people who matter most.” Rich’s response to this was, “I’m happy you’re still here, buddy. Next to my wife, there’s no one I love to annoy more.”

To spot a stroke, make sure to follow the acronym: B.E. F.A.S.T.

If you’re still mourning that ending to Supernatural (like myself), Kings of Con (series and podcast), and the SPN Then and Now podcast are perfect ways to fill that hole in your heart! Attending a convention helps as well. If you have the stomach, checking out THE BOYS is also a fantastic idea. From behind the screen, to on the screen, there are a ton of Supernatural people involved. There are also quite a few Leonardo DiCaprio Easter Eggs to be found throughout the five seasons of THE BOYS.
