EUPHORIA SEASON 3 EPISODE 6 – “Stand Still and See”

Catch the new episodes of Euphoria on HBO Max on Sundays at 9pm est!

Catch up with the 5th episode of Euphoria’s season 3 here!

This is a recap, so spoilers ahead!

Into the sixth episode

Starting the sixth episode, we get a look into Alamo’s background. We see that Alamo has lived an interesting life thanks to his mother. She goes from man to man with one thing on her mind; money. When she meets a man who actually is kind, gentle, and loves her, she uses him for all he’s worth. The man, Preston, who truly cared for Alamo and his mom, spoiled the mother with whatever she wanted. The life of luxury just wasn’t enough for her. She set him up to be robbed blind while they were away, and the robber? Her new boyfriend. So, in short, Alamo’s mother was the toxic influence over him that shaped him into the person he is today.

Faye

Catching up with Rue, she survives the attack from Alamo, but with a twist. She has to find a way to rob Laurie and the only person who could help is Faye. Unfortunately, Faye is head over heels in love and is hesitant to rob her new love blind. In all honesty, Faye’s story makes no sense to me. Why does she have a Nazi tattoo? What was the point of that? It feels like there’s a huge need from the writer to have a shock factor constantly at play, but it isn’t needed if the story is solid. But, moving on, Faye has to take a picture of the key to the safe and send it to Rue so Alamo’s crew can 3D print a duplicate.

Faye gets off the phone and her boyfriend finds out she’s been doing drugs, even though they were trying to have a baby. The good news is that it’s the fake drugs that the feds switched out in the episode prior. The bad news is that Faye still tried to get high. So, Faye is living a messy double life.

Back to Alamo

Alamo gets a visit from his number one opps, Laurie. It’s crazy to me that someone as ruthless as Alamo is able to get pushed around by Laurie, but that’s neither here nor there. Laurie visits him with a new business deal, to have Alamo’s girls work as their drug mule. All the while, Rue is looking absolutely terrified while the feds are listening through her phone. Speaking of, Laurie wants Rue to be the one driving the drugs, but Alamo makes a comment that he has other people he trusts much more than Rue. It’s all very awkward for Rue to be in the room for.

Now that Rue delivered what she promised for the feds, she thinks she’s off the hook. But the feds never say she is, instead they say that the judge will look at her case with more care. I feel like that’ll come into play soon enough.

Maddy is hard at work with Alamo’s girls, making them into the stars she knows they have the potential to be. Even though Rue has warned Maddy to not to work with Alamo, Maddy is adamant that she can handle herself. Maddy is putting in the work, but Alamo isn’t exactly flexible. She says she thinks the girls should take some time off to socialize them in the Hollywood scene, but Alamo isn’t budging.

Jules and Rue

This part was the most frustrating scene of the episode for me. Rue is at Jules home, watching her paint. You can see the love on Rue’s face as she confides with Jules, but it’s a false sense of security. In all honesty, I cannot stand Jules this season. She is wildly selfish, and doesn’t mind who she hurts doing whatever she wants. Whether is be Lexie at her job, her sugar daddy’s family, or even Rue, she hurts whoever gets in her way. Rue calls her out on being a sugar baby to a married man, and that doesn’t go well. This is a wildly different tone from the last episode, when Rue and Jules got together, but now Jules seems like she has a massive chip on her shoulder. She blames Rue for almost ruining her “relationship”. Rue makes it clear that it’s not a relationship, that Jules is nothing more than an object, leading to Jules slapping the taste out of her mouth. I wish Rue would just cut Jules off entirely.

On to Cassie

Cassie is at her new job of being a side character in the show her sister works for. She only has a few lines, but she decides to take it in a completely different direction. Having a complete breakdown on set, she derails the entire scene. The crew is completely blindsided and silently freaking out but no one is more stressed than Lexie. Lexie has so much resentment towards Cassie and I think it shows the most in this episode.

Meeting with the director, it turns out that she finds Cassie compelling. The women think it’s an interesting story to have her working her way out of the pornographic content creating lifestyle. Instead of firing her for derailing their work, they make her a deal. They’ll write her into the show, but she has to give up on her OnlyFans lifestyle. Cassie agrees, and not once is it mentioned that she’s under contract with Maddy. Personally, I don’t see her giving up her current lifestyle because if there’s one thing Cassie can’t live without, it’s the attention she’s getting. Even without the OnlyFans account, her going legit just seems like a strange idea when the whole season has been her building up her career as a content creator. Plus, I’m very interested to see how the contract with Maddy comes into play. Will it be completely ignored and just a loose end or will Maddy react in the way a manager who gets screwed over reacts?

Of course, Cassie has trouble bringing herself to canceling her OnlyFans account. Praying to God asking for help, she still can’t do it. So she tries to call Nate, who isn’t answering the phone. Using all the courage she can muster, she deletes the account.

In the Church

Rue is in a church, and this scene proves just how talented Zendaya is as an actor. Finally getting a phone call from her mom, we see Rue telling her mom about her new life as someone seeking out redemption and salvation through God. While this scene was beautifully handled by Zendaya, there’s a looming feeling that this could mean the end of Rue. Will she end up going to prison? Will the feds screw her over? Will she actually die? Time will tell. But for now, she’s just happy her mom called and she’s happy to get all this off her chest.

And now for Nate

Nate has oddly been used as a sort of comedic relief of the show, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Every scene lately has been him getting beat up or losing body parts. Now he’s outside stomping on the flowers that caused his breakdown in the last episode. Screaming slurs for no reason whatsoever and causing his own scene, he doesn’t realize he’s being watched by who will deliver his next beat down. I just cannot understand this hard turn in his character arc. This was the guy that threatened Maddy with a gun in the past seasons. The guy who caused fear in anyone that got in his way. Now he’s taking beating after beating and just getting worse as a character. There’s only two episodes left, so there’s no telling how his story will end.

The key

Rue comes through with the 3D printed key, and she’s feeling pretty proud of herself. That is, until Alamo says that since this was her plan, she will be the one to see it through to the end. Seems like at this point, Alamo doesn’t care if she lives or dies. I feel like Alamo knows she’s a rat, but just completely prove it. So, he keeps her at a distance while dropping hint after hint that she’s a rat, even going as far as Bishop dangling a dead rat in front of her face telling her it’s dinner time for their pet snake.

Bishop makes mention that he met Rue’s mom, even spoke to her and told her how well Rue is doing. The stakes are now higher than ever, Rue is terrified, and now her mom is involved.

The burning bush

On her way home, Rue almost gets into a tragic accident driving. This causes her to pull over and get herself together. But she looks out her window and we see flames in the reflection. Rue gets out of the car and sees a burning tree, a burning Joshua tree to be precise. This is a very symbolic scene for Rue and how far she’s come in her journey to find redemption, and something bigger than herself. The burning bush is in reference to the story of Moses in the Book of Exodus with the burning tree. In the passage, Moses encounters a bush that is engulfed in flames but mysteriously isn’t burning up. God then speaks to Moses through the bush, telling him that he has been chosen to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. As such, the image is typically associated with divine revelation and purpose. It’s obviously the imagery Euphoria is portraying in Rue’s final scene. Throughout the episode, she’s desperately searching for redemption and some kind of sign that her suffering wasn’t for nothing and actually means something. After narrowly avoiding death, betraying dangerous people, and fearing for her mother’s safety, Rue sees the burning Joshua tree as a possible message from God that she’s finally on the “right” path.

Only two episodes left

We only have two episodes left of this season and I really can’t see how all this will end. Cassie’s story just took a hard right turn into professional acting. Maddy just started a new business venture with Alamo. Lexie is now a writer on her show. Nate is still getting the breaks beat off of him. Rue is now going through an entire personal journey after all she’s been through and is still at the most dangerous point of her arc. There’s a lot of ground to cover, and there’s no telling where we will end up by the end of the season.

Setting Fire to Family Secrets: ‘Is God Is’ Review

0

Biblical parables are quite honestly one of my favorite types of narratives. Different adaptations of biblical stories a la ‘East of Eden’ have been a favorite of mine going back for many years. ‘Is God Is’ takes that very notion tears it up and then sets fire to the entire book. Aleshea Harris in her first outting delivers a story of vengeance that feels like a sermon. ‘Is God Is’ is this years IT film. The film we will be talking about come awards season. The film’s unique approach and 1970’s physique create a masterpiece of genre work and filmmaking.

Racine and Anaia are twins. Suspecting that their mother died in a fire set by their father, the same fire that left them horrifically burned, the twins receive a letter from their mother requesting that they come speak with her on her deathbed. Mother has but one request of the twins: kill their father. Harris’ ‘Is God Is’ is a parable. The story of good and evil, light and dark. Each character playing their role. This film is a stand out among stand outs.

A Fiery Vengeance

Pulling from a variety of sources all made famous in the 1970s, Harris gives audiences a much needed history lesson in just what film making is and should be. ‘Is God Is,’ of course, is filmmaking in it’s purist form. It’s original and artistic, beautiful and dark. The film tells a story bigger than itself, but never so nuanced that it goes over the audiences head. This film is substance AND style.

The story of vengeance, consequences, and family was elegantly presented. Harris presents her story as more about the beauty than the “ugly.” The director choosing to spend more time with the lighter side. The darker side almost always obliteraing a moment of calm. Harris tells a very measured story. That story is almost always two sided. The twins themselves showing the full effects of beauty, light, and dark. The tragedy pulses as the story unfolds, but hope is never extinguished.

The same stylistic choices that make this film stand out will undoubtedly turn some away. ‘Is God Is’ is not for everyone as can be seen by some of the split in acceptance. My personal take on this is to give it a chance and if it doesn’t quite sit well with you, give it time and maybe see it again. Once the power and scope of the story hit you, your perceptions might change.

Cast the First Match

Twins are hard to get right in any setting. Twins have a certain connection that eludes other people who do not have a similar experience. Presenting that experience on screen has historically been near impossible. Most filmmakers failing to get the subtle nuances that make twins special, right. Kara Young and Mallori Johnson took impossible and hit it with a rock in a sock and bludgeoned the expectations.

The portrayal of Racine and Anaia by Young and Johnson was not only believable, but it was believable because it was authentic. The audiences believes that they are twins because they make you think that they are twins. Elegantly flawless in their performances, Young and Johnson nail what makes each twin unique. Young as Racine aggressively takes lead in every situation while Johnson as Anaia is measured, but never not without her sister’s back. There is a bright future ahead of both young actresses.

Of course, ‘Is God Is’ sports two icons of the industry. Vivica A Fox and Sterling K. Brown are electric as Mother and Man. Fox is decisive and pointed with her demand of her daughters. She is also subservient in flashbacks, moving from weakness to vengeance. Brown is terrifying. Calming portraying what can only be described as the devil. Brown’s Man is a calculated psychopath, quick to murder, empathetic to no one. Both, Fox and Brown provide career level performances.

Final Thought:

‘Is God Is’ is a story of vengeance ripped right from the pages of the Bible. Leaning heavily on a 1970s aesthetic and modern charm, ‘Is God Is’ is one of this year’s must see films.

Be Careful What You Wish For: ‘Obsession’ Review

0

Horror has been on an absolute streak of incredible films. Every genre from body horror to out and out gorefests have dominated the silverscreen. Even in this climate of new age icons, Curry Barker’s ‘Obsession’ does something entirely different. It’s psychological horror in a way few films dare to even embark. The film is pure cinematic horror how it is supposed to be. ‘Obsession’ has set a new bar for terror.

Bear has been in love with Nikki for a long time. Problem is…he can’t bring himself to make a move or even tell her how he feels. When the opportunity to make a simple wish presents itself, Bear takes it, never thinking that there could be a real world consequence. Bear would be tragically wrong. In ‘Obsession,’ Barker weaves a narrative that feels part roller coaster, part Haunted House. It’s horror in it’s purest sense.

9, 10 Never Sleep Again

The psychology of horror is complex. Using psychology as a way to enduce horror is purely psychotic. ‘Obsession’ grabs the audience by the brain and drags it kicking and screaming to tortuous new depths following Bear as he slowly loses grasp of the situation that he’s created around him. What makes ‘Obsession’ so horrifying in this aspect is it’s relatability. Who among us wouldn’t have done the same thing without thinking about what consequence laid in wait on the other side? The “Damn…I guess I really never actually wanted what I wished for” feel that the audience leaves the theater with is why ‘Obsession’ will continue to be a part of the discussion for months to come.

It’s that same kernel in the tooth, stick with you vibe that will be the reason ‘Obsession’ keeps the audience up at night. The use of dark and light as Nikki’s condition worsened was traumatizing. The moments where she was watching Bear sleep hidden in a dark corner tap into a deep human instinctual fear. That is all before she moves. The staggered nature of her walk. The forward and backward movement as if her body was glitching. Meant to keep the audience off balance, Barker uses each moment to subsequently knock them to the floor. ‘Obsession’ is truly a masterclass in horror.

Future Stars

Inde Navarette.

Remember that name. Navarette was absolutely brilliant as Nikki, weaving in and out of Nikki and Wish Nikki effortlessly, forcing the audience into a panic with each switch. The way in which Navarette separates even the original iteration of Nikki is magnificent. As the wish demands more and more out of Nikki and Bear, Navarette had to show how far down the rabbit hole Nikki had fallen. Navarette was more than up to the task. Crawling through the dark and dragging the audience into a new type of terror.

While the character of Bear may hold my few criticisms, such as the characters obnoxious inability to make even the most basic of decisions, damning all around him, Michael Johnston portrayed him exquisitely. Johnston provided the perfect level of weakness to the power of Navarette and Nikki. There were times that I found the decisions that Bear, himself, made unbelievable, but Johnston was still effective in his portrayal of him. It was essential that it be clear that Bear was not the one that was in control, Nikki was, and it took a stellar performance like Johnston’s to make the chaos work.

Michael Johnston in ‘Obsession.’ Courtesy of Blumhouse Productions.

Final Thought:

‘Obsession’ is a horrific lesson in not always wanting what you wished for. It’s pure unadulterated terror in every sense of the word. A modern classic in the making, ‘Obsession’ is surely a film we will be talking about for years to come as the blueprint for modern horror.

QUARTER MILE AT A TIME: Celebrating 25 Years of The Fast and The Furious.

It’s 2001, and 11-year-old me just had his entire brain chemistry altered in one big canon event in the form of a movie. Should I have been watching this that young? Probably not, however, fast cars, action, and of course, family brought me into what has become one of my favorite franchises of all time and the global phenomenon known as The Fast and The Furious.

We’ve had 10 movies, and somehow what started as boosting DVD players (physical media is king, btw) to watching Dwayne Johnson flexing out of an arm cast to Jason Mamoa playing his version of the Joker as Vin Diesel drives down The Hoover Dam, there isn’t anywhere this franchise is willing to go. How did we go from street racing to where we are now, and what makes this franchise so fun? Let’s discuss.

Humble Beginnings

The first film was released on June 22, 2001, and grossed $207.3M worldwide. In a year which saw Shrek, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Monsters Inc, Jurassic Park III, The Mummy Returns, Ocean’s Eleven, Pearl Harbor, and even The Lord of the Rings, it still finished at an impressive 12th! It beat out Ocean’s Eleven, Tomb Raider, The Princess Diaries, and Cast Away domestically that year. It starred Paul Walker as undercover cop Brian O’Conner, Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty. Looking back now, the cast was fairly stacked, and it was focused purely on street racing for the most part.

It’s hard to pick out my favorite sequences, whether it’s the initial street race in which the buster came back for Dom when the cops arrived, Race Wars, or even the high-stakes final heist. It’s brought us so many incredible quotes and memes. “Dude, I almost had you!” “I ain’t ever narced on nobody!” “I live my life a quarter mile at a time.” And my personal favorite, “You can have whatever you want, as long as it’s a Corona.” I can see how these movies caught on as quickly as they did. It is the perfect turn off your brain and enjoy the ride type of film. It’s not the usual heist or spy type action film we were used to seeing, and we had never had a film full of exotic street cars in this way before. This first film is the sole reason I have always wanted a Mitsubishi Eclipse growing up, and then eventually the Nissan Skyline.

For Family

The franchise started small and has grown beyond anything we ever could have expected. Fast 7 and The Fate of the Furious even crossed the $1B mark, which is an impressive feat. We’ve gone to space, Tokyo, raced down a never-ending runway pulling down the monstrous C5 Galaxy, and we are even getting ready to have a spinoff TV series. There are no boundaries when it comes to Vin Diesel and where this franchise is willing to go. They’ve done a beautiful job honoring the late Paul Walker at every chance, showing how close this cast is with one another. John Cena, Charlize Theron, and Kurt Russel have joined the family, and it seems every movie Dom has a new long lost brother or villain that just can’t help but join their cause.

The 11th installment, yes ELEVENTH, is set to release in 2028, and it’s safe to say, barring the world ending, I will be sitting in that theater. If there are no fans of this franchise left, then that means I have died. There is always room for family, so pull up your cars, your vans, your Corona’s, and join me in celebrating 25 years of The Fast and Furious franchise!

What is your favorite moment of this long-time movie franchise? Let us know below and check out more reviews by Matt!

First look at STAR WARS: THE FALL OF KYLO REN

MORE FROM NERD INITIATIVE HERE!

Coming in August, Marvel and Lucasfilm join forces to complete Kylo Ren’s saga in Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren, a five-issue comic series by Charles Soule and Will Sliney.

Kylo Ren’s journey in the sequel trilogy made him one of the most compelling—and tragic—figures in the Star Wars mythos. Now, Marvel expands his story with a new comic book series! Following his acclaimed work on Star Wars: Rise of Kylo Ren and Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, writer Charles Soule reunites with Rise of Kylo Ren artist Will Sliney to continue the saga of Ben Solo in Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren, a five-issue series launching in August. In Legacy of Vader, Kylo went on a galaxy-spanning quest to uncover the secrets of his grandfather, Darth Vader. In The Fall of Kylo Ren, he returns to the First Order more powerful and determined than ever before! Witness him shape the galaxy far, far away to his will as Supreme Leader in a saga that leads directly into events of The Rise of Skywalker. The truth behind Kylo’s motives and the full scope of his destiny are revealed here!

THE LEGACY OF VADER CREATES A NEW EMPIRE OF FEAR!

Kylo Ren returns from devastation, wielding total fury! As Generals Hux and Pryde tear the First Order apart with treacherous ambition, Kylo cuts through their schemes with merciless clarity. His wrath forges unity through fear and unleashes a Supreme Leader neither general can escape…nor survive disappointing. A pivotal turning point for Kylo, Hux and Pryde and essential reading for every Star Wars fan.

“The story of Kylo Ren (and Ben Solo, of course) always felt huge to me,” Soule shared. “It was clear that a great deal was out there to explore beyond the moments provided by the films, and it’s been such a pleasure—and a challenge—to deliver new tales for one of the most prominent villains in Star Wars. I’m thrilled I get to do it one more time, and even more so that I get to reunite with the incredible Will Sliney, who kicked things off with me on The Rise of Kylo Ren all those years ago. First the Rise, then the Reign, and now the Fall… it just feels right.”

“This is the one book I have been dying to get back on,” Sliney said. “Ever since Charles and I worked on The Rise of Kylo Ren, we knew we were a part of something special. To be honest, I’ve never experienced a fan group so excited for the story when we worked on Rise, and quietly behind the scenes, Charles and I had been talking about The Fall of Kylo Ren for a long, long time.

“The story we got to tell in Rise is such a key part in the story of Ben Solo. Fall is the same. I’m thrilled to be back drawing it, I can’t wait until this gets out into people’s hands.”

The Story

*Spoiler Free*

Vasilis Meyer lived a pretty normal life. He had a job, hangs out with his friends, and was close with his family. Things were all as they were supposed to be in the life of an average man, until they weren’t. One day, when he’s visiting his grandparents, he finds a talisman that was said to be a momento from his grandparents’ honeymoon. Thinking nothing of it, he sticks it in his pocket and continues helping his grandparents clean up. What he doesn’t know is that this isn’t just any ordinary talisman, but something far bigger than he can imagine. Created by the gods themselves, this magical object is the thing that’s going to change his life forever.

Paul Eza continues the harrowing story of Vasilis, giving us more insight into who he is as a character. there’s many changes that the readers see happen with Vasilis, with him having to begrudgingly accept his new life. We get a good look at his dynamics with his friends, and how hard it is on him to leave them in the dark.

Seeing how important his normal life is to him, and seeing how otherworldly this new life is, it was fascinating to see him work through the emotions of the unknown. Besides the changes of Vasilis, we get to learn more about the talisman itself and the powerful backstory behind it! That was the part I was most excited for when reading the second issue, and I have to say that Eza absolutely exceeded my expectations.

The Art

Dee Fish and Ibrahim Aydin ensure that The Olympian #2 continues the high quality of the first issue, while giving it a more larger than life feel. I think the illustrations shine the brightest when were given a backstory on the talisman, giving us our first look at some pretty iconic characters.

Dee Fish puts you in a headspace that you’re amongst the gods in the storytelling, allowing you to experience the story even better with their artwork. With some excellent shading work, each page is impactful and full of depth. The lettering perfectly captures the tones of the story, working perfectly well off of the character’s facial expressions. All in all, the artists really worked off of the story extremely well, bringing the fantastic story to life.

Final Thoughts

The creative team continue to impress with the second issue of The Olympian! The story is heating up and has fantastic artwork that brings the excitement to life. I cannot recommend this run enough!

Overall Grade – 9.4/10

Off Campus: A Love Letter to Young Adult Romance

Get your tissues out for this series.

Off Campus is a young adult-romance story, following our main characters Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and Hannah Wells (Ella Bright). Based on the popular hockey romance books by Elle Kennedy, it also follows four men who are navigating different love stories. There is John Logan (Antonio Ciprano), John Tucker (Jalen Thomas Brooks) Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn). Also we are introduced to the group’s good friend Beau Maxwell (Khobe Clarke).

I read the books first before the show came out. I was excited to see how the friendships of the boys played out. I was floored with how natural and supportive each guy is. I also have to mention that this will not be the last of seeing all of the gentleman.

Off Campus’s premise is that Hannah, makes a deal with Garrett, to help pull up his grade. In return Garrett would help Hannah get the attention of her crush, Justin Kohl (Josh Heuston). This series doesn’t just cover there. The main themes that are present are trauma, acceptance, self-confidence, and what a relationship needs to look like. I love how sex positive they are in the series as well, because everyone was treated well, and consent is present. Belmont did an excellent job portraying Garrett Graham, and I felt every message that he was trying to say. Ella also did well, but I was hoping for a little bit more from Hannah. Hopefully we get to see these two in the future.

One of the downfalls of the series was Phil Graham (Steve Howey). I didn’t get the menacing man that I had read in the book. I felt that the actor playing Garrett gave more of a push against Phil.

There are many changes from the book to the television series. Including Hannah’s best friend Allie Hayes (Mika Abdalla), not being blonde. There is a major change from the book that bothered me. I understand why it needed to happen, based on our climate in 2026.

Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait for it. The next season has already been greenlit. I wish that the series also was a bit longer, but I binged watched the entire season in one night. I also was surprised that we got a sneak peek into Dean’s character so quickly, because his “season” is not up yet.

Overall this is a solid start to a beloved book series. I do understand that a lot of the content from the book also needed to be condensed. I just hope that the writers work out the kinks needed to make season 2 even better.
