The Story for SUEPRNATURAL #1
The boys still don’t know where Dad is, and Sam is still giving Dean crap for committing credit card fraud. Something he clearly gives into in later seasons. They catch a case of spontaneous combustion, and so they hit the road. Fake rock star alias IDs, and Dad’s journal in hand. They’re determined to find and kill the monster. They seem pretty confident in what they’re hunting, however, in true Supernatural fashion, there’s always a twist.

The Art
The first couple seasons of Supernatural are literally very dark. The comic art in this issue sticks to that feeling that the show created so well back in 2005. With this taking place during that first season, it felt right at home. Not only does the art make you nostalgic for those monster of the week episodes, it’s also quite beautiful. From the colors, to the details, to the expressions on our characters’ faces. The art beautifully put the Supernatural world into a comic book.

Baby
One very important character was missing: Baby. This was for legal reasons, and they do a good job of acknowledging her absence. Any fan also knows it’s not the last time Baby has to be put in a corner for her own good (Swayze always gets a pass). So it’s not outside the norm for her to be sadly missing for anonymity or repairs. However, they do pick a car that resembles her a bit to still give that feel. She may not be Baby, but it’s much better than when Dean was forced to drive a minivan.
Overall Grade: 8/10
Supernatural #1 did a good job of introducing the comic book reader to this world, as well as season 1 Sam and Dean. For people already part of the “Supernatural Family” they’ll enjoy all the callbacks. While, those new to this world get a quick introduction to some very important characteristics and tools of the Winchester brothers.
We wrapped up with a scene that made me eager to get where this road so far is taking them!
