Did You Know? How DOOM Took Gaming To A New Level

The DOOM franchise has been a staple in the video game industry for over two decades. The series has seen numerous releases, remakes, and reboots, each with its own unique twists and turns. Although the franchise has been around for a while, there are still some facts that even the most hardcore fans may not know.

Origins of DOOM

DOOM is a first-person shooter video game franchise that has been around since 1993. It was created by id Software, a company founded by John Carmack and John Romero. The game was originally released for MS-DOS, and it quickly became popular due to its fast-paced gameplay and impressive graphics.

The development of DOOM began in 1992, and it was inspired by a number of different sources, including the first-person shooter game Wolfenstein 3D, which was also developed by id Software. The first version of DOOM was released as shareware, which meant that players could download and play the first episode of the game for free. This was a revolutionary move at the time, and it helped to make DOOM one of the most popular games of the 1990s.

One of the reasons why DOOM was so successful was because of its modding community. Players could create their own levels and modifications for the game, which helped to keep it fresh and exciting. This also led to the creation of a number of spin-off games, including Final DOOM and DOOM II: Hell on Earth.

The Creators Behind DOOM

John Carmack was the lead programmer for DOOM and was responsible for developing the game engine that powered DOOM, which was known for its fast-paced action and smooth gameplay. John Romero, on the other hand, was the lead designer for DOOM. He was responsible for creating the levels and designing the overall gameplay experience.

Dave Taylor was the lead artist for DOOM, responsible for creating the game’s iconic demons and weapons. Kevin Cloud was responsible for creating the game’s textures and artwork, while Sandy Petersen was responsible for designing the game’s monsters and balancing the gameplay.

Together, the team at id Software created a game that revolutionized the first-person shooter genre and set the stage for many of the games that followed. Today, DOOM is considered a classic and continues to be played by gamers around the world.

DOOM’s Impact on the Gaming Industry

DOOM, released in 1993, is widely regarded as one of the most influential video games of all time. It was a groundbreaking title that set new standards for first-person shooters and helped establish the genre as a major force in the gaming industry.

One of the key elements that made DOOM so successful was its fast-paced, action-packed gameplay. Players had to navigate through a series of increasingly challenging levels, fighting off hordes of demons and other monsters along the way. The game’s intense combat and visceral violence set a new standard for what players could expect from a shooter.

Another factor that contributed to DOOM’s success was its innovative use of technology. The game was one of the first to use 3D graphics and advanced sound effects, which helped create a more immersive and engaging experience for players.

But perhaps the biggest impact that DOOM had on the gaming industry was its role in popularizing the first-person shooter genre. Before DOOM, first-person shooters were a relatively niche genre, but the game’s massive success helped bring it into the mainstream. Today, first-person shooters are one of the most popular types of video games, with millions of players around the world.

Overall, DOOM’s impact on the gaming industry cannot be overstated. It helped set new standards for gameplay, graphics, and sound, and played a major role in popularizing the first-person shooter genre. Even today, nearly 30 years after its initial release, DOOM remains a beloved classic that continues to inspire and influence game developers around the world.

Doom Guy

Doom Guy, more recently known as The Doom Slayer, originally had little characterization and no name in hopes of making the first-person sci-fi/horror more immersive. With the release of Knee-Deep in the Dead, the first Doom series novel, the protagonist gained the name of Flynn “Fly” Taggart. Later on in the Doom 3 novels, Doom Guy’s name is John Kane.

Where Did The Title “Doom” Come From?

Funny enough, Doom had many names during development, by programmer John Carmack found hi inspiration in the movie “The Color of Money”. The character Tom Cruise portrays is a billiards player, hustling for money. When someone asks him what he was in his case, Cruise opens it to reveal a custom pool cue and replies “Doom”. The character would go on to destroy everyone on the tables and Carmack thought that was the perfect way to exemplify what the release of their game would do to the gaming industry!

Microsoft and Bill Gates

At one point Doom was installed on more home computers worldwide than Microsoft’s Windows 95. This led Bill Gates to consider buying id Software in hopes of profiting from the franchise. Micrsoft couldn’t get that deal done, but a deal was made to develop a port of Doom specifically for Windows to promote the operating system as a gaming platform.

Bill Gates even went so far as to star in a now infamous promo announcing the arrival of Doom to Windows 95, in which he superimposes himself into footage of the game. The port proved to be a resounding success for the burgeoning operating system.

DOOM’s Influence on Pop Culture

One of the most notable examples of DOOM’s impact on pop culture is the use of its name and imagery in music. Many heavy metal and hardcore bands have referenced DOOM in their lyrics, album art, and even band names. The band “Doom” was formed in the 1980s, several years before the release of the game, but the game’s popularity helped to increase the band’s notoriety.

DOOM has also been referenced in movies and television shows. In the 2018 film “Ready Player One,” the main character is shown playing DOOM while in the virtual reality world. The game has also been referenced in episodes of popular TV shows such as “The Simpsons” and “South Park.”

In addition to its influence on media, DOOM has also had an impact on the video game industry itself. The game’s fast-paced, first-person shooter gameplay has inspired countless other games over the years, including the hugely popular “Call of Duty” franchise.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re venturing into a new beginning for one of pop culture’s most iconic pairs. With war breaking out in Gotham City, The Bat family is being torn apart. With his family crumbling, Batman looked to be fighting this battle by himself.

That outlook was quickly discarded when the bond between Father and Son took over in his darkest hour. Now with Damian Wayne fully by his side, Batman continues his mission against crime with a newfound focus.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #1 by Joshua Williamson , Simone Di Meo and Steve Wands by DC Comics gives readers a high octane adventure with the Wayne family maneuvering in an ever unstable Gotham City. Let’s take a deeper dive into this new series, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This latest chapter in the caped crusader’s life begins at the Gotham Zoo. It is a stormy night. A haunting narrator is describing their view of Gotham. They elude to extreme changes. Readers witness a figure working in a lab area and their subject makes a loud statement on the panel. A bat is being dissected.

The story shifts to the dynamic duo flying into a Zeppelin over the Gotham skyline to stop the White Rabbit. With hostages in tow, the situation is intense. Batman and Robin take down Rabbit and her hired help. The aircraft is stabilized and hostages are rescues. The moment is capped off with a perfectly placed Fist Bump between father and Son.

THE GOTHAM WAR HEATS UP!

Post mission, Bruce and Damian head home into a brownstone inside Gotham City limits. With the situation with Catwoman escalading, the Manor isn’t the best base of operations currently. Considering the past few months, reconnecting as a family has been a challenge. Bruce appears to be trying but Damian is more guarded.

A day later, Damian breaks down the Rabbit’s motives. The center of her attack (and a few other robberies) has been Dr. Kafira, known for DNA work. Kafira was also a hostage on the airship. That night, the pair heads out to pay him a visit.

What they find appears to be another kidnapping attempt. However, readers soon find out more is going on than the pair realizes. The situation escalates until a shocking move happens leaving the pair trying to cypher what is going on.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #1 by Joshua Williamson , Simone Di Meo and Steve Wands (Credit: DC Comics – Cover: Clay Mann)

Williamson pushes the family dynamic to the forefront as the new adventure hovers in the background. The current relationship of Bruce and Damian is one that is rebuilding itself. Post White Rabbit, the closing moments are capped off with a perfectly placed fist bump. It might seem like a throwaway moment but it nails what the book is all about.

ANOTHER GREAT DC COMIC!

The conversation the pair has in the brownstone drives that point home. Seeing Bruce trying to find the right words while Damian copes shifting the conversation back to the current mission leaves no question in readers minds.

The “drawing Pad” in Damian’s room backs that up with how Damian is dealing with his family dynamic. The story at hand is solid with much room to grow. It feels like a “back to basics” Batman and Robin which means nothing but win for the readers.

BIRDS OF PREY SOAR AGAIN!

Di Meo wastes no time bringing the action to this issue. A fantastic 2-page spread with the duo crashing through the Zeppelin canopy establishes a high pace for the moment. Di Meo also hits the bullseye with the Bruce/Damian conversation at home.

There is a creative use of shadows and light to reflect Damian’s past few months. This is capped off with a solid full page shot of his sketch pad. Heading into the final act, the villains are featured with another great two page panel that readers will be excited to see. The attention to details here is fantastic. The issue is capped off with a superb cliffhanger panel that you can’t help but run to get the next issue after seeing.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The new adventures of Bruce and Damian Wayne wastes no time locking readers in for what will only be an incredible story. Making family first, Wlliamson plays off the father/son bond with an exceptional script. Di Meo compliments the script & constructs a distinct feel of energetic visuals making it a 1-2 combo that can’t be missed. Don’t miss this book on Bew Comic Book Day!

Iron Man’s First Villian

Billionaire Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, has faced a number of enemies throughout his career, due in part to his former profession as a weapons manufacturer. However, his first villainous adversary dates back to Tales of Suspense Number 39 in 1963. In this issue, Tony was forced to build his first Iron Man suit and escape the clutches of Wong Chu, a high-ranking North Vietnamese Commander.

After Wong Chu’s men found Tony wounded in the jungle, he promised to provide medical treatment in exchange for a new weapon. Tony built his first Iron Man suit and used it to defeat Wong Chu before escaping. Later, Wong Chu attempted to take out Iron Man but was ultimately beheaded by a member of the Sons of Yinsen in Iron Man 2000 Number One.

James Gunn is Boosting Comic Sales by Giving Credit to Comic Creators

This article is not meant to focus on studios, movies or TV in any way, yet the comics that inspire some of them. We will not be breaking any SAG or WGA strike rules and will not promote any movie or studio here in any way!

In recent months, DC Comics have been flying off the shelves, and some credit for this goes to James Gunn.

In October 2022, Gunn, along with Peter Safran, were announced as Co-CEO of DC Studios.

In January of 2023, Gunn revealed the first chapter of some of his and Safran’s planning. A few days after that announcement, Gunn released a list of five DC comics from which upcoming projects would draw inspiration.

The books listed were “All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, “Swamp Thing” by Alan Moore, “Batman” by Grant Morrison, and “The Authority” by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch.

Soon after this announcement, the sales of DC comics began to skyrocket. Jim Lee, the current CEO of DC Comics, expressed his enthusiasm to The Hollywood Reporter.

“It’s amazing to have partners in Peter and James, particularly James. He was a comics fan growing up and knows our mythology inside out. Having that kind of ally … allows us to really leverage what he is doing and allow us to market and sell comic books to new readers,” says Lee.

However, Gunn’s recommendations did not end there.

On August 15, 2023, Gunn went to social media to endorse the DC comic “Wonder Woman: Historia,” written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and illustrated by Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott. Impressively, within a mere 24 hours, this comic rose from the 63rd rank to secure the premier position among DC comics on Amazon’s sales chart.

Through a single action, James Gunn succeeded in raising enthusiasm amongst fans for DC movies like never before. By recommending comics, Gunn created a good starting point for casual comic readers, gave fans a better idea regarding the projects they’re about, and raised comic book sales keeping local shops in business.

Star Trek: Defiant #7 – The Day Of Blood Continues

Welcome to another New Comic Book Day review from the N.I. Bullpen!

Today we are taking a look at part 4 of the very first Star Trek comic book event in history! The Day Of Blood event is reaching a fever pitch in this latest issue.

Kahless II is slaughtering his way across the galaxy with his Red Path followers. Some of our favorite Star Trek characters from across multiple different series have teamed up to take him down.

This is Star Trek storytelling at its finest! So without any more wasted time, let’s hit warp 10 and check out Star Trek: Defiant #7 from IDW Publishing!

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD**

Quick Recap

Kahless II, Emperor of the Klingon Empire, is on a warpath. He is on a quest to kill the gods, just as the first Klingon Emperor did before him.

He is aided in this quest by his followers, the Red Path, who believe that Klingons have become weak. They have been on a rampage across space and their own homeworld of Qo’noS. It’s been a bloodbath.

Now, Kahless possesses the Bajoran Orb of Destruction,  and he wants more. His quest has brought him to a confrontation between Worf and Sisko, and fighting for Kahless, Worf’s own son Alexander.

© 2023 IDW Publishing

Glowing Sisko

This issue begins with Alexander standing defiantly between Kahless and the duo of Worf and Sisko. Worf attempts to reason with his son, but Alexander quickly lunges forward and attacks. Father and son are now locked in heated hand to hand combat.

While they fight, Sisko attempts to move in and challenge Kahless, the goal ultimately being to either take him down or take him into custody. Kahless, of course, has other ideas entirely. Kahless begins to walk away from Sisko, and Sisko responds by calling him a coward who is fleeing battle. Kahless says he is simply “giving the Emissary To The Prophets the wide berth of respect he deserves.”

Just then, Kahless has a ship overhead blast some kind of energy weapon directed at Sisko. It’s a direct hit. Instead of having the desired effect of destroying Sisko, however, Sisko begins to glow!

Back On The Defiant

This is where we see countless fan favorite characters together. So many in fact that I may forget to mention a few, simply for the sake of not making this review an hour long read.

B’Elanna Torres is currently in command of the Defiant. At the helm is Tom Paris. They are currently acting as support for the crew of the Theseus, under the command of Spock, which is locked in battle with multiple Red Path ships.

The Theseus’ shields are down to 0% so the Defiant puts itself between an incoming attack and their allies. The Defiant takes a direct hit as well as a collision from the attacking vessel. If it wasn’t for the Ablative Armor of the Defiant, the ship would have been broken in half.

B’Elanna presents Spock with an idea. She needs him to play the role of “The Lying Vulcan” in order for it to work and being out of any other reasonable options, Spock listens.

A Shocking Discovery

The Defiant continues to take damage from the Red Path weapons. B’Elanna orders her comms officer to hail the enemy ship with surrender terms.

Their hail is met with a response from someone everyone thought was long dead at this point. It’s the Captain of the destroyed Santa Cruz, Captain Meyerson. Meyerson, rather than being killed by the Red Path, was instead captured and converted. He is now fighting in the name of Kahless. He declares that if they seek to save their lives by surrendering then they will fail.

Spock then offers to exchange the Bajoran Orb of Creation for the lives of the two crews. After a quick scan, Meyerson says “We will take the orb. Then you will die.” The Defiant then launches a small shuttlecraft, and after scanning this, Meyerson is led to believe that the orb is on that shuttlecraft.

After beaming aboard the small vessel, Meyerson is hailed again by Spock. Spock reveals that the orb is not on the shuttle, but .47 kilograms of Weapons-Grade Trilithium IS on board. Shortly after, the vessel explodes, taking Meyerson and many of the attacking ships along with it. The rest of the Red Path ships flee.

Father Vs Son

© 2023 IDW Publishing

The battle between Worf and Alexander rages back on Qo’noS. Heated words are exchanged amidst the clash of Bat’leths. Alexander has grown strong, strong enough to be a threat to Worf for the first time.

Between blows, Worf is still trying to talk with his son. Explaining that fear is controlling Kahless and so controlling Alexander. He even admits to his own fear of being complicit in his own son’s death should this fight continue to that point. Worf explains “Kahless is afraid, and fear wreaks havoc on the Klingon mind. It drives us to dishonor.”

Finally, after coming to fists, Worf gains the upper hand decisively. He grasps his son’s hand preventing him from falling after a blocked blow. You see in Alexander’s face that he is beginning to come around. Then the unthinkable happens.

Alexander gasps. From behind, Kahless has thrust his Bat’leth through the back of Alexander, running him through. Alexander falls unconscious (or dead, we don’t know for sure just yet) into his father’s arms, and Worf lets out a mournful roar like only a true Klingon can.

Sisko is still glowing, yet unable to move. He attempts to telepathically reach out to Spock saying “We…Need…The…Orb…”

Story Review

Cantwell is making Gene Roddenberry very happy from beyond the grave with this series, and issue 7 is no exception.

This is classic Star Trek storytelling on an epic scale. The sheer might of the Red Path is something that hasn’t been seen really since the Borg attacked for the first time. The stakes are high, as if Kahless is able to carry out his plans, he will have no one in the galaxy who can stand in his way anymore.

The new mystery with what is happening to Sisko and how he is still alive is intriguing to say the least. How in the world did he survive a direct hit from a starship?

The fact that there are so many characters from different Star Trek series in this book is astounding to me. Add on the fact that Cantwell has managed to capture the personality traits so consistently across so many characters interacting at once is both impressive and natural at the same time. The story just flows like Star Trek should.

Artwork Overview

Unzueta and Louise are doing excellent work with this issue. The action is fast paced and the focus is primarily on the characters and their interactions, which I love. I like a good epic action sequence as much as the next person, but the emotion and expressions on the characters’ faces are important. This team nailed that!

Outer space is beautiful. Any time the universe itself is shown it just feels vast. Even in a small panel, the use of color and scale work together perfectly. Within the Defiant during the battle, their consoles spark and explode and the sparks are so bright you almost think that if you touch them on the page you might get shocked yourself.

The artwork alone would be enough to pick up this issue for me.

Overall Score: 9.5 OUT OF 10 – “Must Pull”

This is part 4 of the Day Of Blood event, which is the very first Star Trek comic book event in history. It’s so awesome to see crew members from different shows interacting and fighting together. They even managed to include Shaxs from Star Trek: Lower Decks!

The storytelling is nothing short of brilliant and the artwork in this book is stunning to say the very least. You can tell the team is really passionate about what they are doing and they are putting a huge amount of effort into this event.

Make sure you pick up Star Trek: Defiant #7 from IDW Publishing at your local comic book shop this week for new comic book day!

Welcome to another New Comic Book Day review from the N.I. Bullpen!

If you are into cryptids, then I have a book for you this week on new comic book day! This new series from Ahoy Comics is an anthology series, where each story dives into a different legendary creature.

Issue 1 contains two cryptid stories, the first being “Ballroom of Death” which covers the legend of the Yeti from Himalayan folklore. The second story is called “Wormy and Me” which goes into detail about the Mongolian Death Worm from the Gobi Desert. For the sake of time and spoiler prevention, we’ll only be covering “Ballroom of Death” in this review.

Without any further delay, let’s jump in and take a look at this new series from Ahoy Comics, Project: Cryptid #1.

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD**

Awesome Detail

Before we get into the story itself, I have to mention one awesome detail of this series from the very first page. Eash story begins with a page of a “file” on whatever cryptid that particular story is about. It covers the name and aliases of the creature, location, a brief historical explanation, and even gives the oldest and newest reported sightings!

Ballroom of Death

The story opens with a climber named Mr. Graff and his two guides as they are climbing Mt. Everest. Graff is making an entry into a voice journal as his guides debate their route to the summit.

The guides want to take Graff on the easiest route, known as “Candy Bar Alley” which is the route they normally take wealthy CEOs such as himself. Graff’s friend Reginald had climbed the mountain before, and told him the route he had taken, the “Ballroom of Death.” That is the route Graff wishes to take.

Copyright © 2019 AHOY Comics. All rights reserved.

After arguing and trying to convince Graff to take the safer route, his guides finally agree to take the more dangerous path saying “If we go that route, chances are that one of us will die.” To which Graff responds “Well, good thing I brought two of you.”

The Climb

The three men begin the climb along the ‘Ballroom of Death.’ They use baskets to lift each other up cliffs and brave against -20 degree weather and winds in their attempt to reach the summit. The guides are convinced that Graff’s recklessness is going to get them killed.

Eventually, the three come upon a small cave. The guides advice Graff to take shelter inside the cave, so that they can set up the basket for the next lift up another cliff. Graff heeds their advice and ventures inside the cave.

As Graff begins to make another entry in his journal, he hears something inside the cave with him. A full grown Yeti appears suddenly. We hear screams from inside the cave. The guides seem unsurprised, almost like they knew this was going to happen. It seems like this has happened before, and these guides in particular seem to see this often.

The last panel we are shown is the Yeti devouring what is left of Mr. Graff.

Story Review

Russel manages to build the tension wonderfully in this short story.

We are given the who, where and why quickly and organically. It doesn’t feel rushed and the reader isn’t left wondering why Graff is on Everest in the frist place. A rich man trying to outdo another rich man. It’s easy to understand and there is not much detail given or needed other than that.

The end of the story left me with a question or two. Why did these guides lead Graff along the more dangerous path even though they knew it would end badly? Sure, he insisted, but as the guides surely they could have just refused and either left him to his own devices or convinced him of the easier path. It’s almost like they knew right where the Yeti’s cave was, and it seems as though they may have purposefully pointed Graff to go into the cave knowing he would never come out.

Artwork Overview

Pérez & Seely bring a superior quality of work into this story. I could almost feel the chill in the air myself as I read through. It seems like it would be a challenge to make a snowy environment jump off the page of a comic book without it feeling forced or washed out, but that’s not the case here.

The change of color tone once inside the Yeti’s cave is drastic. Having said that, it’s also appropriate for the scene. It is the dread at the end of the story brought to life through color. The final panel of the Yeti eating Graff, surrounded by the bodies of other climbers who had met the same fate, is horrifying and gratifying all at once.

10 out of 10 for artwork here.

Overall Score: 9 OUT OF 10 – “Must Pull”

This was a fun read. Not only as a general fan of cryptids, but as a fan of stories.

The fact that each story starts with a history and description of each creature is awesome. Not only for those new to the world of cryptids, but also for long time fanatics.

Don’t read too much into the fact that we left out a review for “Wormy and Me” because that is fantastic as well! I just really want to urge people to go out and pick up the book to see for themselves.

Project: Cryptids #1 from Ahoy Comics is setting up to be a fascinating series. I can’t wait to see what creatures are featured in issue 2 and beyond. This is an excellent choice for new comic book day this week if you are a cryptid fan or if you just need something new and different to read this week.

As always everyone Be Safe, Be Kind, and Take It Easy!

Hunt for the Skinwalker #1Boom! Studios

Creative Team: Zac Thompson (Writer), Valeria Burzo (Artist), Jason Wordie (Colorist), Joe Sabino (Letters)

It’s not very often a comic comes along that’s based on a true story. This comic is about the insane events that happened on a ranch in Northeastern Utah named Skinwalker Ranch. Do you love shows like the X-Files, Fringe or Paranormal investigations? You’re in good company with this series so let’s get into it!

The Background:

This 4 issue mini series opens up with a redacted title page that instantly gave me X-Files vibes and I immediately knew this issue was going to be a trip! Readers don’t need any background about Skinwalker Ranch prior to reading  because Writer Zac Thompson crafts a reader friendly narrative that flows similar to investigation type shows.

Immediately, we start out on the ranch where Tom Gorman, the father of the family, is digging holes for a new fence and listening to an old school radio. At the same time his wife, Ellen Gorman, is putting away groceries like any other normal day. When suddenly, after getting a drink of water, Tom’s post hole digger mysteriously vanishes. A similar situation happens to Ellen where her groceries are magically put back in their bags. This is just the beginning of the puzzling events that are told during this first book.

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

The Stylistic approach that Valeria Burzo takes with the art plays well by building suspense as the issue progresses to more obscure and unexplained events. Jason Wordie’s colors build on the suspense and help showcase the overall fear that Ellen and Tom are going through. The more traditional paneling and lettering techniques used by Joe Sabino allow the comic to flow seamlessly between events, create additional tension and allow for an immersive reader friendly experience.

Final Thoughts:

This first issue did a great job giving new readers the background needed for those that are unfamiliar with Skinwalker Ranch while building the excitement and anticipation for what’s to come!

Overall Rating: 8 out of 10

The Sacrificers #2 – Image Comics

Creative Team: Rick Remender (Writer, Creator), Max Fiumara (Art, Creator), Dave McCaig (colors), Rus Wooton (Letters)

**Minor spoilers below**

Issue 1 of the sacrificers gave us just a taste of this new world where the story focused on 2 species of characters, the blue bird-like creatures and the gods of this universe. Issue 2 continues the world building as we are introduced to the humans and a humanistic orca/humpback whale like creature.

During the shackled sacrificer’s march through the whale-like creatures’ town we begin to learn about their beliefs in this society.

These creatures are the true believers where they think it’s an honor to be the sacrificer for their race and blindly accept the fact that they will be rewarded for this role. Throughout this issue, the humans are the exact opposite and are constantly questioning their purpose and role in this journey.

The Writing:

Rick Remender does a great job crafting these two polar opposite roles. This constantly makes the reader swing between the two characters as they are trying to determine if the sacrificers are a good or bad thing.

The narration between the humans and the whale-like creatures produced some of my favorite moments of the issue. Remender’s pacing is perfect in educating the readers about the complex world that is being crafted. Keeping the focus to one or two main characters in the issue makes this series easily digestible as a monthly book.

The Art and Layouts:

Max Fiumara and Dave McCaig continue to produce incredible scenery! The vivid details in the facial expressions and shadow work during the discussions between the sacrificers was some of my favorite moments in this issue.

McCaig’s use of colors helps the readers connect with the ever changing tone. The use of the traditional 9 block panel layouts created the additional suspense leading up to the final splash pages.

Final Thoughts:

A solid second issue that takes the reader on a wild journey but still ends with more questions than answers! There’s a ton left to unpack with what roles the different creatures will play and how their actions could impact the cultural norms of the society.

Overall Rating: 8.5 out of 10
