Catch up with Spider-Man Noir #4!

The Story

There’s someone in town masquerading as Spider-Man and causing chaos wherever he goes! Peter, who doesn’t have his powers currently, can’t do a thing about it. He especially can’t do anything about it when the faux-Spider-Man busts into Gwen’s house saying nothing more than repeating “Gwendolyn”. Peter fights with all his might, even though he’s already battered, bruised, and powerless. The fake Spider-Man shows no signs of giving up. Gwen was told to run and get her dad’s gun, but she was too afraid to shoot it, until she wasn’t.

Mustering up her bravery, she points the gun and shoots her target. Dead on the ground, Peter goes to unmask the villain, telling Gwen “you killed the man who shot your father”, and removes his mask. Once the mask is removed, there’s nothing but shock. Shock from Peter, shock from Gwen, and shock from me, the reader.

After all of that, Peter’s investigating isn’t over. Peter overhears some police officers being loose-lipped on some pretty big things, so he decides to follow them. There, Peter learns of an entire secret Nazi ring that’s been forming right under the city’s nose.

The Writing

Erik Larsen created a story that was all gas and no breaks throughout the entire run. From beginning to end, there was action, there was romance, there was drama, and excitement in between all of that. Spider-Man Noir #5 had so many things happening within the pages, and Larsen had a perfect balance throughout. The ending of the comic run was very satisfying, with tying up all loose ends. This was a perfect ending to an excellent comic book run!

The Art

The artwork has been fantastic all the through this run but the fifth issue takes the cake. The panels that stood out to me were the ones that had each artists’ talent complimented perfectly by the other. In the pages of when Spider-Man discovers the Nazi gathering, that leads to some pretty incredible artwork thanks to Andrea Broccardo, Rachelle Rosenberg and Joe Sabino.

Broccardo had a beautiful mixture of introcate details and abstract backgrounds that gave the panels a great energy. Rosenberg was able to work off the darkness of Spider-Man’s suit and have it contrast the bright colors of the scenes. Joe Sabino was able to translate the severity of the situation into the dialogue, perfectly setting the tone of the story. Together, the artists went far and beyond to make this amazing.

Final Thoughts

Spider-Man Noir #5 is the perfect ending to what’s been a banger of a comic book run. There’s been so much to love about this run as every issue gives you something amazing. The fifth issue was all gas, no breaks and brought the excitement level to an all-time high!

Overall Grade – 10/10

DIE: Loaded #4- Main Character Energy

We’re getting some major main character energy this month. Writer Kieron Gillen, Artist Stephanie Hans, and Letterer Clayton Cowles are back with Issue #4 of Image Comics’ DIE: Loaded.

This issue, Stephanie’s art is so beautiful. She has taken the issue’s story and created beautiful art for it. We also get to see more character development with the art in this issue, and it’s amazing to see. Attach on Clayton’s lettering work, and this issue already looks amazing. 

Clayton has not missed a beat or step with this series. He has taken these characters and placed them in a new story, and it feels so natural. He knows these characters inside and out and has figured out how to make this story work so well. I also love that we see what the villains are plotting as well. 

We see that this issue picks up from last issue, and Sophie is still on a mission to get out of the game. She ends up on a realm-jumping adventure with Chuck’s son, Callum. I love seeing this because Callum and Sophie are opposite personalities, and it’s so fun to see them adventuring. 

Overall Grade: 10/10 

I’m loving this series so much. Kieron and the team are taking these characters and really expanding on them. I cannot wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the series.

The Story

Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops, is the leader of Alaska’s X-Men team. He keeps the team in check, he runs point on missions, and he makes the tough choices. But what happens when he’s all alone and wounded?

After a particularly frustrating mission with the team, Scott receives a mysterious message addressed to him. Asking Beast to fire up the Quinjet for him, Scott knows he’s immediately needed. Taking off to meet someone of his past, there are plenty of old memories brought up. Some good, some bad, and some Scott didn’t even know he had. As hard as this visit was, it won’t be the only challenging thing about this trip. The Quinjet is shot down, leaving Scott to having to crashland.

The good news is that he survived.. the bad news is that his ruby quartz lenses broke. So now Scott is lost, without transportation, wounded and blind. This seems pretty bad right? Scott doesn’t even know that Donald Pierce and his cyborgs, The Reavers, are right around the corner, preparing to fight.

The Writing

This review is written by Nerd Initiative’s own Janelle and Megan!

Megan – Alex Paknadel brings such a strong start to this comic run with Cyclops #1. We see Scott go from his usual authoritative role as the X-Men’s leader to someone who finds themselves in a more vulnerable place, emotionally and physically. There’s no telling where the writer will take Scott in this story, and I’m excited to find out. Paknadel is able to pull you into the story by the first page, and you won’t want to stop reading by the very end.

Janelle – In this issue of Cyclops, Scott Summers continues to impress me when it comes to having a rich background. Scott stands firmly on the things he believes, and at the end of the day he’s a true hero. In terms of story, I think this issue of keeping that classic leader form of Scott Summers. I’m hoping to see more of Scott’s flaws in later issues.

The Art

Megan – With a great story, you have to have great artwork to match, and that’s what we have thanks to Rogê Antônio, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and Joe Caramagna. Antônio details each page with perfection, while Sifuentes-Sujo brings vibrancy and depth to the pages with his work in the colors. Together, these two artists compliment each other perfectly well, giving us quite a few drop dead gorgeous shots with Cyclops showcasing his bright powerset. Joe Caramagna handles the lettering and is able to bring you into the inner thoughts of the characters through the dialogue, easily having you feel the emotion of the characters. Together, the artists took the story and brought it to life in a beautiful way.

Janelle – The art is really great, I love all the vibrant colors. I also love how the art is displayed when it comes to all the action scenes. There are a couple of comic panesl that stuck out to me, and the visual representation I can’t praise enough.

Final Thoughts

Megan – 10/10. When this run was announced, no one was more excited than me. Now I see that excitement was rightly placed because this comic was fantastic! We’re getting a great closer look at Scott Summers that we haven’t gotten to see for a long time, and so far, it’s emotional, exciting, and extremely compelling.

Janelle – 9.6/10. I love Scott Summers as a leader and I love how multi-layered Alex Paknadel is writing him.

Overall Grade – 9.8/10

SPOILERS AHEAD

The Story:

Matt: It really is something seeing someone else live out your dreams of laying there with She Hulk however, I would not survive a punch from her so it works out. Speaking of punches, this issue really cranks the intensity up a notch as this is no ordinary defense trial. Jen must now fight Jack of Hearts with whom she loves if she hopes to save Sakaar. This issue is full of clever moments from Stephanie as there are various ways that Jen is able to manipulate the energy Jack harnesses against him without killing Jack or herself. There is a lot of emotion packed into this issue as it truly feels personal and no longer simply Jen representing Quade against Korven. The issue ends on an utterly shocking note and I truly don’t see how this ends other than all out war breaking out!

Megan: It’s been some time since we’ve seen She-Hulk reunited with her love, Jack of Hearts! Unfortunately it’s under the worst of circumstances. As apart of this defense trial to save Quade’s life, She-Hulk has to fight and the person Korven has chosen if, of course, Jack of Hearts. What’s interesting is that this isn’t the Jack she knew before. This Jack’s mind is completely wiped clean of any memories so he’s nothing more than a vessel. Maybe this makes it easier for She-Hulk to fight him, maybe it doesn’t. Either way, She-Hulk has to win to save Quade’s life from Korven.

There was a lot more emotion in this issue than the others and it was perfectly handled and well-balanced by Stephanie Phillips. There’s so many layers to She-Hulk that continue to get pulled back in this series, but the fourth issue definitely shows the most vulnerable side of her. Along with that, we get some great action from She-Hulk in the fight to save Quade. We also end on a very surprising note that will live in my head rent free until the next issue drops.

The Art and Letters:

Matt: Emilio and Fabi spare no detail in ensuring that every muscle, every line, everything is drawn out as She Hulk and Jack battle. One of my favorite things within the art is showing how “normal” Jen can look when she is She Hulk and not in battle and then on a dime have her shredded from head to toe. The energy in the colors is simply off the charts as these panels during the battle are bright cosmic bursts. The final page itself is beyond shocking largely due to how they bring certain things to the front which helps leave a lasting impression on the reader.

Megan: Throughout Planet She-Hulk, the artwork has been top quality, and I’m glad to see that continue with the fourth issue. In Planet She-Hulk #4, there’s a fantastic amount of attention paid to the details of the characters. Whether it be She-Hulk’s sadness or Quade’s hopelessness, it’s easy to see the characters living in their emotions and expressing them. Along with this, there were some great focal points of the pages thanks to the vibrant colors juxtaposing the muted colors of Sakaar. All in all, the artists outdid themselves once again!

Final Thoughts:

Matt: 10/10 Planet She Hulk #4 takes an emotional toll on us as it is heavy from start to finish. She Hulk must battle her own emotions while balancing the lives of an entire planet which is no easy task. The entire team is continuing to deliver such a fun story that keeps the reader engaged every step of the way.

Megan: 10/10. Planet She-Hulk gets better and better with every issue! With the huge cliffhanger we were left on, I’m very excited to see what chaos ensues in the next issue!

Geiger #21 from Ghost Machine comics is out today. Last we saw Tariq Geiger he had come face to face with The Northerner. Someone who has given him something he desperately needed: hope.

The Story for Geiger #21

A German Nazi tank has fallen from the sky. The Northerner isn’t sure why, but continues to put the pieces together and answer Geiger’s questions. As they explore the tank more questions arise than are answered. Despite Geiger seeing a tank from WWII fall out of the sky, filled with very specific items and decor, he still refuses to believe Malcolm North can change the past. He refuses to give into the hope. Not realizing by going along with Mr. North he already has.

As this duo hits a bump in the road, Geiger does what he does best. Yet he’s suddenly faced with a completely different obstacle than he could have anticipated.

The Art

Geiger #21 gifted us with some beautiful and dark historical moments, as well as some gorgeous glowing man action shots. While every issue of Geiger has been filled with amazing action shots, and facial expressions on each character, that perfectly sets the tone for each scenario, issue 21 also snuck in a lot of extra details. Details of Ghost Machine past, and what seems to be the future. Every issue warrants, the stop and smell the roses moment with the art. However, this issue, deserves a bit extra.

Overall Grade: 10/10

The Northerner isn’t new to the world of Ghost Machine, but he is to Geiger, and I’m already loving them together. They come from incredibly different pasts (quite literally), yet their dynamic together makes a ton of sense. Despite also having very different ideas of what is possible, they essentially have the same goal.

Geiger #21 perfectly set up what’s to come. Some bits we knew, and others we didn’t, and I can’t wait to see what pans out. While you should dive into all that Ghost Machine has to offer, you should absolutely pick up Geiger. I have a feeling the Glowing Man’s world is about to get a lot bigger, and a lot more fun.

The Story

Sirens: Love Hurts #1 brings together characters from opposite walks of life to work toward the same goal. In this first issue, we see Dinah, AKA Black Canary meet Selina, AKA Catwoman, for a girls lunch when it’s clear that they aren’t alone. Waiting at the table is Harley Quinn and Pamela, AKA Poison Ivy, both of which aren’t fans of Dinah. Dinah isn’t too pleased to see them either as they are villains and she is the opposite. “We’re all just girls from Gotham” according to Selina in an effort to get everyone to get along. After brief lunch where the women are getting along well, Dinah is ditched and left with the check.

The other women had plans of their own which turn out to be a robbery. What turned out to be a successful job turned into something else entirely when Harley, Selina, and Pamela hear a scream and run outside to find a dead girl laying on the ground. A huge mystery around the body and the killer starts to form, and the only people taking it seriously are Dinah, Harley, Selina, and Pamela. These heroes have to work together to save the women of Gotham and it seems like they’re on their own in this.

The Writing

Tini Howard brings a new story with some of the greatest and most underrated characters of the DC Universe. Black Canary joining forces with the Sirens shouldn’t work well, but Howard uses her talents to successfully bring this new team of powerhouses for the greater good. Sirens: Love Hurts #1 will get you hooked immediately to the story and will keep you locked in until the very end. I’ll be very anxiously awaiting the next issue to drop!

The Art

The artwork of Sirens: Love Hurts #1 is nothing short of stunning. The artists bring a comic that’s heavy in details, wrapped in gorgeous contrasting colors, and lettering that delivers perfect tone to match the story all thanks to Babs Tarr, Miquel Muerto, and Becca Carey.

Some of my favorite parts of the comic are seeing the characters in their super suited glory, working together as a team. Catwoman looks fantastic, Poison Ivy’s look is vibrant and eye-catching, Harley’s look feels very on brand with who Harley is as a character, and Black Canary’s look is classic Dinah. I’m very excited to see what the artists do with these characters and what amazing artwork we get in this run. If it’s anything like what we got in this first issue, then we’re in for a real treat.

Final Thoughts

Sirens: Love Hurts #1 should be on everyone’s pull list. A great story, a compelling mystery, phenomenal artwork, this comic has it all!

Overall Grade – 10/10

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #1- The Mailman Always Delivers

Marc Spector is back for a brand new adventure from Jed Mackay and Dev Pramanik in Marc Spector:Moon Knight. For this newest entry in MacKay’s Moon Knight universe, I’m teaming up with Nerd Initiative’s Marvel historian extraordinaire, Megan. Our story opens on Day Eight. The reader doesn’t really know what that means until later, but it seems our good friend Marc Spector finds himself gainfully employed as a mailman delivering letters day in and day out. The only problem is, there’s one letter he can’t seem that he can’t seem to find the proper delivery location for. What will happen to Marc when he can’t get the job done? What happens when being a mailman is more than it seems?

Writing

Megan: After reading Jed MacKay’s Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu series, I knew this new run would be a hit, and I’m pleased to say, I was right. Marc Spector: Moon Knight #1 starts off in a way no one could have predicted happening. Marc Spector is a shell of himself, afraid of his own shadow. Turns out he’s drugged to oblivion by some villains who want to know the secrets of Moon Knight. Marc doesn’t know who he is outside of being the mail delivery man, and has no idea he’s been kidnapped and manipulated. Jed MacKay does an incredible job at building the tension in the story and keeping you hooked until the very end. It’s very interesting to see just how lost Marc is and how Moon Knight is nothing more than a television program to him. This is a completely different way then we’ve ever seen Marc and I’m loving every second of it.

Shawn: I’ll be honest. As big a fan as I am, I keep expecting Jed MacKay to miss. His work is everywhere right now with MS:MK, X-Men, and Avengers all carrying his writing credits. Every single time, though he still comes through clutch and this lead issue of Marc Spector: Moon Knight is no different. MacKay really “gets” the characters he writes. When MacKay has taken on a well run title like Avengers, he’s built on the success. When he’s taken a character that may have gotten a little stagnant like Black Cat, he reinvigorates them with new life.

Ask any Moon Knight fan and they would tell you it would be tough to follow MacKay’s first run on Moon Knight that ended after 30 issues in 2023, but MacKay followed it with more Moon Knight series, including Vengeance of the Moon Knight, and Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu. MacKay continues to roll in this issue. As I said before, MacKay gets what fans love about the characters he writes and nowhere is that more evident that his work on Moon Knight.

Art

Megan: Dev Pramanik, Rachelle Rosenberg, Cory Petit are to thank for the excellent artwork of Marc Spector: Moon Knight #1. Throughout the comic, the tones are darker with a looming feeling of hopelessness, which is the exact opposite of the usual starking white look for Moon Knight. I loved this being a way to show just how lost Marc really is in this drug-induced confusion of his life.

There were many layers in the comic that showed just how different Marc is without the Moon Knight persona, such as how he was drawn. A scared version of Marc who’s nervous enough to sweat through his clothes is what we see, which immediately sets the tone of the comic. The artists really nailed down the idea of seeing Marc in a completely different light in the most impressive of ways.

Shawn: The art for this issue is just phenomenal. It starts from the jump with a gorgeous cover courtesy of Erik. M. Gist and rolls right into the panels with amazing work from Dev Pramanik and Rachelle Rosenberg.

I really love the way that Pramanik and Rosenberg combined to give a little cosmetic update to Mr. Fear. With the very Doom centric offerings headed our way this year in Marvel Comics ahead of Doomsday, I have to think giving Mr. Fear a cloak that invokes the image and colors of Doctor Doom was intentional. Either way, it was a great decision and really works.

Pramanik and Rosenberg make a great team. Pramanik’s lines are clean when they need to be and shaded and thick when the scene calls for it. Rosenberg does a great job picking colors that fit the scene. Their work together to draw and color the animated show Moon Knight may be some of the most creative use of lines and coloring I’ve seen in a Marvel Comic in a while

Final Thoughts

Megan: 10/10. I could not be more excited with how Marc Spector: Moon Knight #1 started with this issue! The excitement is evenly matched with the mystery of the story, and end on a very exciting note. 10/10. 5 stars. No Notes.

Shawn: 10/10. It’s easy to get let down when you go in with such high expectations, but I was so satisfied with this issue. MacKay has worked with various other members as part of the creative team on Moon Knight since 2021 and hasn’t missed a beat. The new creative team on Marc Spector: Moon Knight sets the stage for a series that is distinctively Moon Knight, while still feeling unlike anything we’ve seen from the character before.

Overall Grade: 10/10

The Unseen

Star Wars: Jar Jar #1 is a new stand-alone comic book series featuring a loved and hated Star Wars character. This new series is written by Ahmed Best & Marc Guggenheim. For those who may not be aware, Ahmed is the actor who brought Jar Jar Binks to life on the big screen. I can think of no one better suited to also bring this character to life within comic books as well.

Issue one of this new series deals with the short comings of galactic politics. Senator Binks lobbied to grant “expanded emergency powers” to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Not fully understanding that doing so would ultimately bring one planet to its potential demise. Readers will follow Jar Jar as he goes on a mission to investigate what is really taking place.

Within this issue Jar Jar is reacquainted with an old Jedi ally, Master Kelleran Beq. Who I might add is also brought to life on the big screen by Ahmed! Master Beq takes Jar Jar to a mining outpost where he is witness to the harsh work environment that Palpatine is enforcing. This mine is producing a certain mineral that is needed to build a fleet of military ships.

Jar Jar is then introduced to two individuals who are responsible for the miners as well as conducting vital research that pertains to the planet. Because of the endless mining, the planet is unstable. And the research being conducted has ruffled some very powerful feathers, causing a bounty to be placed on one of the individuals.

Senator Binks returns to Coruscant and schedules an immediate meeting with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Jar Jar expresses the injustice that he has witnessed in regard to the harsh mining practices and encourages Palpatine to take action. Thus, Jar Jar becomes the new liaison for the mining planet, vowing to take protective measures to stabilize the planet.

Writing

Ahmed Best & Marc Guggenheim wrote an outstanding first issue for this series. I credit this to Ahmed portraying both of the main characters on film. Who knows these two characters better than their creator, the actor who portrayed them! The dialogue coming from Jar Jar as you read makes you hear his voice from the films. The plot was simple and easy to follow making this an absolute joy to read!

Artwork

Kieran McKeown & Laura Braga did an amazing job bringing Jar Jar back to life on these panels! The art has this rough and faded texture to it that adds to the dynamic of the story. The amazing line work, shading and coloration bring forth the serious tone of this issue. The focus on the blasters and lightsaber within the battle panels is excellent! Absolutely beautiful work!

Final Thoughts

Back when Star Wars Episode I was released, I was a big fan of one particular character, Jar Jar Binks. Now seeing him get his first stand-alone comic book brings a warm smile to my face. This is a Star Wars story. By that I mean that it has all the factors that play into the mold of Star Wars. You have the galaxy, politics, jedi, bounty hunters, and lightspeed! Mesa thinks this is a great first issue, and mesa look forward to seeing where Jar Jar ends up going and doing next! Go pick up a copy of this thrilling story from your local comic shop today!

DC K.O. #4: The Absolute Showdown!

It’s an absolute showdown as the heroes from the all-new DC Absolute universe have come for the penultimate battle in Darkseid’s tournament. The end is here as the King Omega moves his chess pieces into the final position, with our heroes having but one final gasping chance to win. Today we crown our last man standing!

The Story:

Megan: DC K.O. continues to be a thrilling roller coaster ride full of surprising twists you don’t see coming. In DC K.O. #4, the battle between the contestants and the Absolute Universe has officially taken off, and our heroes realize what’s off about the Absolute characters. They’re 100% Darkseid DNA all the way down to a singular atom. This changes things for most of the remaining contestants, except one. Joker decides to switch sides, which is unsurprising. Fortunately a former contestant joins the fight, evening the odds.

So much happens in this fourth issue, it’s hard to believe it all fit into one comic. Identities are revealed, hope is lost, hope is regained, the winner of the tournament was chosen, and we find out that simply winning the tournament was never that simple. DC K.O. #4 does a fantastic job at showing the true stakes of the tournament, and showing how far Darkseid is willing to take this, and even shows what chaos we’re in for next in the wild event of DC K.O.

Matt: There are so many twists and turns to this story that Scott and Joshua have yet to unveil. Every single time I begin to think that this is the end, they can’t possibly pull something else off, I am proven wrong. Joker, of course, decides to switch sides and join Darkseid in this fight, which I didn’t mind at all. Especially when Batman makes his grand return, which finally sees him kill Joker. When we flash back to game night, of course, Batman knows how to manipulate the dice to always roll just right in his favor. This feels very tongue-in-cheek and perhaps the last moment of joy this tournament brings us.

As Darkseid returns in a very grotesque manner, we are left with one last major surprise: Lex Luthor somehow becomes the final man standing set to face off against Darkseid. It feels as though we are watching our two least favorite teams square off in the Super Bowl, it builds massive amounts of anticipation for issue 5.

The Art and Letters:

Megan: The only thing more thrilling than the story is the artwork, which was hands down the best it’s been in this run. Javi Fernandez, Xermanico, Alejandro Sanchez, bring so much heat to the pages of DC K.O. #4, with their use of pristine drawings, excellent detailing, and eyebrow-raising color sets that make the characters practically pop off the page. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, who handles the lettering, gives so much depth to the dialogue, that you can feel the pure power in the words of Darkseid.

Matt: Speaking of Omega energy, this issue is full of it as Javi, Alejandro, and Xermanico all pack an insanely powerful punch to every single panel. The panel where we see Darkseid climbing out of Booster Gold’s mouth is so uncomfortable, and we cannot look away because the detail and the ability to capture the size of Darkseid as he comes out are impressive. The array of colors in the final pages is, though a spotlight has been turned on as we near the finale. I want to shout out the way the Absolute heroes are drawn in this issue as well. There is a panel where Diana has a split face of herself and Pegasus, which is detailed so well. The way they bring a darkness to these heroes we have learned to love in their respective universes blew my mind.

Final Thoughts:

Megan: 10/10. So much happens within the pages of DC K.O. #4! Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson up the stakes and brings even more excitement to event.

Matt: 10/10. DC K.O. #4 is the perfect penultimate issue as we near the end of the tournament. There is an insanely amazing amount of detail in the artwork, with twists and turns throughout every single page. I’m ready to see how this ends as they’ve built up the anticipation to perfection.

Overall Grade – 10/10

Earlier this week, a set of photos showcasing Sophie Turner in Amazon’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” was released. They show her on set, in a completely different get-up from what we saw her in just a few weeks ago. Where the previous look had Turner in Lara’s classic “blue tank top” get-up, the new set photos show her in a look more fit to brave the woods and colder elements.

Her new look seems to be entirely original and, as a long-time fan, I love it! She’s rocking a sleek winter vest with a tan long-sleeve underneath and grey tactical pants. On her sides are her absolutely iconic dual pistols. Judging based on the background, she seems to be out in the woods, perhaps outside of Croft Manor? We’ll have to wait and see!

”Tomb Raider” follows Sophie Turner’s Lara Croft and is based on the iconic video game franchise currently developed by Crystal Dynamics. The series is also set to star Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, Paterson Joseph, August Wittgenstein, Bill Paterson, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, and Celia Imrie.
