Creative Team: Sophie Campbell (WRITER and COVER), Haining (ARTIST), Alex Guimaraes (COLORS), and Becca Carey (LETTERS).

The Story:

Megan: “People say Happy Holidays but they don’t have to be” is what Kara’s father says to her and it could not ring more true. In Supergirl #8, it’s the Christmas season, and Kara isn’t in the Christmas spirit. Understandably so, Kara gets down in the dumps during this time of the year, and her parents are more than understanding. For someone like Kara, who’s lost so much in her life, it makes sense that this time of cheerfulness and togetherness would feel like a dark rain cloud over her head.

What I loved about this issue, is that Sophie Campbell is able to bring forth an issue that so many feel every year around this time. This isn’t unusual for Campbell, as she manages to retell an issue that so many feel alone in feeling in every issue of Supergirl. So, I think it’s safe to say that Sophie Campbell’s superpower is being able to have readers feel seen and validated through her writing, and it’s very appreciated.

Matt: Sophie continues to capture something special with this Supergirl run, and with this issue, she is nailing the forgotten essence of a Holiday special. This issue reminds me so much of a sitcom or TV show’s Holiday special that would run this time of year and all the while delivering more important lessons. The Holidays aren’t a happy time for everyone, and in fact, they can be hard, which is something that really resonates with me in this particular story. Kara is struggling as her friends and family from Argo City are gone; meanwhile, she teaches Lesla an important lesson that sometimes heroes can’t save everyone. This story is powerful, and it hits both sides of childlike wonder with Lesla and the snow, but also something deeper with Kara.

The Art and Letters:

Megan: Dripping with holiday excitement, the artists really brought forth the hype for the holiday. With the beautiful panels of the peaceful snow, or the festive pages decked out with Christmas sweaters by the fire, it’s hard not to get into the holiday spirit with Supergirl #8. Haining, Alex Guimaraes, and Becca Carey are to thank for the excellent work in bringing the story to life. Haining is the artist behind Supergirl #8, and always delivers in terms of quality. Alex is the colorist, and makes this festive comic drip in vibrant colors and beautiful contrasts. Becca Carey is the letterer of the comic, and makes you feel every bit of Kara’s emotion through the dialogue. Together, the artists really knocked it out of the park once again.

Matt: Visually, this issue brings out every flavor of Christmas and the Holidays! I love how Haining and Alex showcase my favorite things about this time of year, such as the snow and the peacefulness of a fresh snowfall. The detail in Lesla’s face reminds us that she was robbed of so many things, and she has an innocence about her. My favorite scene in this issue is the dark neighborhood overhead page with the lightly illuminated houses that hammer home what I love about this time of year so much. It’s a subtle joy and peace that will never leave me. Becca’s letters truly bring out Kara’s exasperation and sadness as her heartbreaks with each words as she holds a broken robot and relic of so much importance to her.

Final Thoughts:

Megan: 10/10. Joelle Jones continues to do incredible work with Supergirl, and I look forward to seeing what’s next. This should absolutely be on everyone’s pull list for this week!

Matt: 10/10. Supergirl #8 brings me back to the classic Christmas specials that would air every year. It is full of life lessons as Sophie brings so much heart to this issue. I cannot get enough of this run, and it is severely underrated. More people should be reading!!!

Overall Grade – 10/10
