The Story

When learning about the life of a superhero, you can name a few things you assume right off the bat. A super cool secret lair, a funny sidekick, a motivation to save the innocent public from destruction that just never quits. All of these things are usually what would add up to your usual superhero, but not in this case. Superguy is not a superhero like any other. He’s lazy, he’s rude, he thinks extraordinarily high of himself, he doesn’t have a humorous sidekick, but a robot sidekick named Robotguy. All of the things you wouldn’t expect of a superhero are qualities this hero has, and somehow it just works.

Superguy #1 is equal parts action to equal parts comedy, giving you the excitement and entertainment that you wouldn’t expect to see in a superhero comic. Anthony Iannaccio, the writer and scriptor of Superguy #1, makes Superguy relatable in ways you don’t want to admit, but we all can relate to. He’s full of himself, his attitude is off putting, and he doesn’t go out of his way to strive for the greater good. However, his sidekick, Robotguy, is the exact opposite. He’s good, he always has his eye out for crime, he goes the extra mile because he’s a hero.

In Superguy #1, Robotguy realizes that perhaps he isn’t just a sidekick, but a hero himself. With this realization, he takes over all the hero work in the city, while Superguy sleeps the day away. Upon awakening, Superguy has very big feelings about Robotguy getting the praise he gets for all his hero antics, and he makes those feelings very known. Anthony Iannaccio expertly brings Superguy’s feelings to life, while ,making the reader feel every bit of Robotguy’s frustration.

The Art

Joey Murphy is behind the artwork Superguy #1, and his talents shine throughout the read. With artwork that has that superhero vibe that’s matched lighter energy of Superguy himself, Joey perfectly brought this story to life. What I think really sold me was the juxtaposition of simpler panels with much more detailed panels, which really highlighted Robotguy’s story in the comic. It was an interesting contrast between Superguy and Robotguy’s panels, as the latter’s was much more busy than Superguy’s was, which was a great symbol of who these characters are to their chores. All in all, Joey Murphy successfully understood the assignment, and the reader is the one who benefits from his talents.

Final Thoughts

With action, humor, and crime fighting splashed all over the pages of Superguy #1, you can’t go wrong with checking out the comic. It was a breath of fresh air in today’s much-too-serious world.

Overall Grade – 9.1/10
