Chris Condon continues to show why there’s always room for new stories in the Marvel Universe. In doing so, Condon has taken an intentional step into what can often be rugged territory, as Marvel fans are historically resistant to new versions of characters. However, Condon manages to nail the landing. Ultimate Impact: Reborn #4 is a stunning escalation of the story we have gotten so far. We are treated to a chance to really begin to understand what some of these newer powers are and how they tie into the story. It’s a charming mixture of old and new.
Perhaps there is no better way to tie old and new together than with Steve Rogers. Condon does a wonderful job of integrating Steve Rogers into the story. From the opening panels of Rogers reflecting on the nature of war to his challenge to Hostilicus, Rogers becomes a key part of the story. I really enjoyed seeing more of the Sightseer in this issue and getting a glimpse of her powers. Ultimate Impact: Reborn #4 sets the stage for what should be a thrilling finale.
Art
Stefano Caselli and David Curiel do a stellar job on this issue. Caselli manages to give us some skills / powers we are familiar with in new players on the scene. The result is that we get characters that feel unique despite the fact they may have some powers and in some cases the same name as characters we already know. I really love the scenes Caselli draws of Wonder Man’s interactions. He really does a splendid job of conveying Vin’s emotions and confusion about his powers.
David Curiel really makes the colors jump off the stage. The challenge to Hostilicus by Captain America is beautifully colored and really sets the tone for the final issue. I think the art team is really going to get to shine in the final issue and Curiel’s colors in this issue really lay the groundwork for that. Joe Sabino helps the story flow easily through killer lettering and outstanding SFX work.
Final Thoughts
Ultimate Impact: Reborn #4 is a solid entry into this series. It feels like it sets up a big finale while also serving as an enjoyable story.
