Making Enemies, Not Friends

Akeldama is on a frozen snow-covered planet hunting the Prisoner on behalf of the IPPF. Of course, well on the planet she can’t help but make enemies. This time it’s with a powerful man named Mallory, who is upset that Akeldama is helping his pregnant robot “lover” Oola, who he’s mistreated. Now, he sends his men to take out Akeldama once and for all. However, Akeldama has her partner Thunder, who unfortunately is back to his old ways of nonviolence at the worst possible time. Although he is finally ready to reveal why he feels the way he does.

Protector of Peace

This issue takes another break from the main story to take the reader on a side mission. Benito Cereno is not afraid to take the time and expand the story and universe. However, this really waters down the main story and can cause some confusion for readers who are looking for some sense of stability. It would be different if these side quests led to something more, but they seem to just serve as a squirrel moment for the writer. The only saving grace for this issue is some kickass action, and the tease of learning the dark secret of Thunder which ties into Akeldams’s adopted father.

The other saving grace as always is the incredible art that this series features. E.J. Su always out does himself with the art in this series. Beautiful worlds, amazing and unique characters, and some of the best and goriest action in all comics. Su’s art is the standout winner each and every issue and is no different in this issue. Msassyk does an exceptional job of matching the colors perfectly with the art, which really draws the reader’s attention to every panel.

Final Thoughts

Blood & Thunder #7 continues to deliver some badass action and art. However, these aspects are the sole redeeming qualities of the series, as each issue appears to diverge significantly in direction, making it challenging for readers to follow the overall narrative. A Bounty Hunter on a mission, who takes on full side quests that don’t lead to the capture of her target, which would lead to her dream job makes very little sense. This book has the potential to be a top tier comic book, but the story waivers too much to really build it up. At this point if it wasn’t for art and action, there would be nothing keeping the scores on this series up.

Final Grade: 6.8/10
