The Essentials:
- Who is Ulysses Monarch?
- What is the Codex?
- Is this the end for Ulysses Monarch?
Ulysses Monarch #5:
Everyone is after the illuminating Codex, which if read, expands the human mind to its full potential, including telepathy and many other cool side effects.
With that in mind, can Ulysses and his band of rebels keep the Codex protected or will they have to do something rash instead? I promise you, you’ll be surprised with the result! This is a finale you won’t want to miss.

The Art:
Tolibao really has a unique style that is gritty, while also reflecting the new world he’s helped design.
Monarch is definitely not your classic hero and you can see that with his expressions and visual elements that compliment his vacillating behavior.
Is he a coward or a brilliant kind of hero, only time will tell for the archeologist turned crusader.
Without solid art to pair with the amazing writing from Guggenheim, this wouldn’t be the fun and thrilling comic it is.
The Writing:
Guggenheim has such a great talent for a story like this. It’s part Spaceballs, part Star Wars and part something truly original from his very fantastical brain.
Wait till you meet Maggie the First, an almost Helen Mirren type character that may say she wants to save the galaxy but her actions say otherwise.
This final issue of the mini-series has a major twist towards the end and it’s one Monarch fans most likely did NOT see coming.
All part of a larger story that is unique, fast-paced and sure to entertain. As a closer, this one hit’s all the marks and checks all the boxes you’d want to see closed.
Overall Grade: 9.0/10
A very solid ending for a new brand of comic exploration. I truly hope we see Monarch again, he’s such a fun character with so many influences of your favorite past and present heroes. Guggenheim has truly created something new, fresh and fun!
