“Blanks”
Billionaire Edward Kane is obsessed with finding a way to become immortal. He wants to make sure death becomes a thing of the past for all of humanity. Thankfully for him he has the means and the funds to set the research into motion. He visits the research facility that he is funding and gets great news from the lead doctor of said facility, Dr. Culloch. The doctor tells them they have a breakthrough, and Kane instantly volunteers to be the test subject. Even though the doctor tries to talk him out of it, Kane will not be persuaded. However, what happens after the drug is administered will change humanity forever, if Mr. Kane allows it.
A Breakthrough or A Curse
This first issue of the series really sets the tone of where the creators want the series to go. Dan Watters does an impeccable job of bringing the classic tv series to the page. The story is a perfect match to what the show would depict on the small screen. A story with a moral that is learned through an odd sci-fi twist is what you expect and it’s what you get. The lack of hubris by Edward Kane is a warning to us all about how humility and due process should always be followed.
As much as the story encapsulates the tv show, the art really brings the show to the page. Morgan Beem does a fabulous job of capturing the feel and vibe of the tv series in the art, right done to the black and white color scheme. Add to that the character designs that put the reader back into the era of the original show, and you have a perfect storm for perfection. Sandy Tanaka does an excellent job with the lettering that completes the whole vibe of the series.

Final Thoughts
The Twilight Zone #1 is an awesome first issue in this resurrection of an iconic franchise. It hits the vibe and feels of the original tv show flawlessly. When I saw this book on the docket I had to review it, as I am from Binghamton, NY, the home of Rod Serling, the creator of The Twilight Zone. Due to this the bar was set high for this book, and not only did it reach that bar, but it also exceeded it. This is my Pick of the Week and should be on everyone’s list of books to pick up at the LCS this week.
