The Thin Line Between Love and Hate
We start the issue by meeting “Mad” Rob Collins and his “friend” Irene. It is Irene’s birthday, and she wants to settle down with Rob, whom she has been seeing for 12 years. When Rob blows her off as just a booty call, it drives Irene to leave the truck and storm off angrily.
Fast forward to a little later and Rob amongst other patrons are in the diner as Private Fallows busts in after being chased by the infected soldiers. As Fallows tries to get the patrons to barricade the diner and prepare to defend themselves. He gets some pushback, mostly from Rob and mostly because Fallows is a black man. As the infected get closer, the patrons are forced to accept what Fallows is saying. But it may be too late for Irene, as she shows up outside in the mix of all of this.
Heed the Warning and Live
This issue does an excellent job of building the tension of the story well, continuing to slowly reveal the world and what’s actually happening. Chris Condon is putting on a masterclass in how to build suspense and really make the reader dread what is coming next. However, at the same time he is weaving in some real messages about racism and the distrust of the government. Being able to walk the lines of horror, entertainment, and delivering a message and doing it seamlessly speaks volumes for Condon’s writing.
The art continues to be very good and innovative in this issue. Jeffery Alan Love gambles on the black and white style and it really pays off in this book. Not only does the black and white coloring give the art a sense of mystery, but couple that with the featureless faces and character designs and the mystery explodes. This book is distinguished by its exceptional artistic qualities, making it one of the most unique works on the shelf today.
