The Red Snow Falls
General McCoy has ordered a nuclear test to take place at the Gaines Army Base, which is in Southern Nevada, and known to the locals as “Atomic Alley”. The year is 1962, so nuclear tests are nothing new, however this one seems different. Corporal Finney oversees the test and gets the men to hunker down in the bunker on the test site.
At this point Private Fallows realizes the drop tower is too close to the bunker. As he questions the placement of the bunker, the Corporal orders him to get in and shut up. After the nuke is detonated the men are ordered out of the bunker, to which Fallows objects again, and again he is ordered out. However, after exiting the bunker the men notice a red snow, and Private Russo falls ill. As the Corporal takes Russo to task, the issue turns deadly, and a new problem emerges.
Let the Carnage Begin
This first issue does an awesome job of introducing the reader to the world and building up intrigue and suspense. Chris Condon shows once again why he is a master of Horror Comics with this original story. Giving the reader only what they need to understand what is going on, well being vague about where we are headed builds tremendous suspense. Between the unknown and the threat of what is to come the horror your mind builds up is palpable.
The art in this issue is wonderful and really compliments the story. Jeffrey Alan Love made an awesome choice of making the art black & white and making the characters featureless. The latter choice really makes the reader uneasy as you can’t readily discern what the characters are feeling or even making them individuals. That choice makes for even more suspense and uncertainty which really drives the story.
