Who is Jumpscare, Really?
What a blast this book has been so far! A superhero with the power to teleport and conjure any weapon/prop from her favorite horror movies?! That’s wild! It gets deeper though. She’s from an ultra conservative evangelical family and her powers are granted by a dark eldritch horror that seem to come with a bit of baggage. Even so, Allie is slashing across the pages and it’s fun to watch!
After the setup in issue 1 we now have Allie making a choice to help find her sister or tell her parents to shove it. She surprisingly opts for the later and goes out for a movie night to get her mind off of things. When the movie doesn’t seem to cheer her up it’s off for snacks. The shop she goes to however, is being robbed and Jumpscare finds just the thing to make her feel better…hacking up bad guys!

The Rabbit Hole Just Gets Deeper!
As this story about family and Allies trauma with it all is unfolding, something ancient and darker is brewing beneath it. Elder gods and demons are converging on her AND her family. She’s attacked by one such devil during her playtime with the shop thieves. It spoke of harvesting flesh and prophecies about The Leviathan, but none of it made any sense to Jumpscare and now she’s looking for answers! Why does the Dismal Concordat want to catalogue her and why is her sister being pulled into this?!
The Power of Family and Demons in Jumpscare
Cullen Bunn dives deep into the book of lore and gives us a glimpse of how deep it goes! We knew Jumpscare was destined for more than being a horror movie themed superhero, but she was touched by something that is attracting cults, demons, and the worst of the worst! Bunn does an amazing job at hinting to us what’s behind the curtain, and even giving us a small peek, without revealing the main attraction!
Like Cullen Bunn? Our Brilliant Ruin: Horror At Crane Mansion #1- Victorian Horror
Jumpscare seems very one dimensional for the most part, but there is something else going on there. She does care for her family deep inside. It can be seen in her reaction to her being folded out of the family photos in her home. These playful little teases will build to a impactful moment. Bunn is building 2 stories at once, brick by brick.
Jumpscare Draws the Horror!
The artwork in Jumpscare is the reason I love comics! Danny Luckert is not afraid to push boundaries and step out of the box to give us something fun. The creature designs are beautifully abstract and horrifying! There is some really intense body horror in this mixed with some eldritch influences. The action is so dynamic and moves like poetry. On top of that he truly captures the full range of human emotions throughout this book.

A Bloody Colorful Playground
In contrast to all of this horror and gore is a color palette that invokes a sense of softness and beauty. Cool colors like pink, blue, purple, and green paint the pages with either emotion or suspense. The warmth of heartfelt and happy moments are harshly interjected by the cold of the eldritch horrors and the bloodthirsty rage of bright reds!
Overall Grade: 10/10
I love everything about this series so far and I can only see it getting better! The action, the gore, and the uneasy excitement I get with each panel makes me giddy. I love every character and monster design in this issue. The colors draw you in. I love the references to horror movies, Friday the 13th being a big one in this issue. There’s so much to like about this on top of a very good plot unfolding with great pacing. I’m definitely a Jumpscare fan now and I want to know if you are to in the comments below!
