Searching for Answers

Captain Coffin and Antoine are searching the Island to figure out what is happening. Montague and his men find the two of them and after brief questioning, they let them know that their rowboat had been stolen by the lighthouse worker. Despite being half a mile out to see, Captain Coffin after firing a couple warning shots, kills the lighthouse worker with a headshot, which impresses the soldiers.

Once back at the monastery, we learn the back story about Captain Coffin and his special knife. It seems that in search of the “monsters” that killed his family and destroyed his hometown it has led him to assemble other hunters to search the world. Now on the Island, it looks like maybe this is all too familiar to the Captain.

There is More to This Place

The Lycan #2 picks up right where issue one left off, building more on anticipation than suspense at this point. Mike Carey continues to create a world where the reader is unsure of what is going on, while leaving only small crumbs to follow. The mystery of it all is its strongest strength, but also its biggest weakness.

The art is stunning and matches the story perfectly. Diego Yapur puts stunning backgrounds on each panel, with pitch perfect characters for the period the story is in. DC Alonso uses a dark color scheme matching the darkness that the story is teasing.

Final Thoughts

The Lycan #2 is building up suspense and anticipation for something to happen, and while this peaks the readers interest, it can also bore some readers as well. As someone who likes slow burns, I have no issue with this but understand how others can. Issue three will need to give us a little more or this story runs the risk of being too slow. For right now though there is still enough intrigue to make this a worthwhile issue and story overall.

Overall Grade: 8/10
