The Ghost Hunters Become the Hunted in Plague House #1

What if one of those ghost hunting shows ran into the REAL DEAL? That’s what gets explored in Plague House #1 from horror writer Michael W. Conrad and Ringo Award winning artist Dave Chisholm. A nice suburban home becomes the scene of an appalling family massacre and becomes a haunted house with a vengeance.

You’ll Do Bad Things #1 – Reality or Fiction?

A team of three eclectic ghost hunters brought together by fascinating circumstances. There’s man of faith named Jacob, a skeptic vlogger named Holland, and the leader Del, who truly believes in the supernatural but struggles to understand it. When these three personalities enter a home with a history of evil deeds and unexplained malice, they all may find what they’ve been looking for and something worse.

Plague House #1 Builds a Gruesome Ghost Story

Michael W. Conrad takes on one heck of a tour in this first issue of Plague House. The majority of the issue follows the inner monologue of Del as he introduces us to the team and explains what he knows about this house and his profession. We get psychological analysis, explanations of false experiences, and best of all, a ghost story like no other.

More from Michael W. Conrad: In Bloom #1 – A New World Sprouts

The character development alone in this one issue is fantastic. Between the religious experiences of Jacob and the passion to disprove phenomenon by Holland, we learn so much about their histories and what they bring to the story. Then, we get to see them actually interact with real spirits!

Del however remains a bit of an anomaly. He leads this team, he’s passionate about the supernatural, and yet he struggles with something internally that we as readers can relate to in a lot of ways: the “WHY?” By the end of the issue I’m still not sure what he’s doing, but something drives him to go further than to just “ghost hunt”.

The Art of Horror in Plague House #1

Dave Chisholm takes this intimate story and rises the tension through his artwork. The Plague House is fashioned as a character in a way, always looming over the paranormal investigators. Reds illuminate the page every time a paranormal event occurs. This is used to perfection in building suspense for coming ghost scenes.

The Wonderful Nightmare Fuel of Oz: Disney’s Return to Oz

The physical design of the mutilated bodies and/or ghosts are jarring and yet appealing. I can’t take my eyes away after exploring the details for a moment. Frames and depth of field add to the suspense. You know a ghost is in the room, but the characters don’t. They’re looming in the shadows, the corners, or even over their shoulders.

Overall Grade 10/10

I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into at first other than a good ghost story. What I found was something so much more intriguing. I was pulled into the essence of the three main characters and horrified by what happened to the ghosts. The art style of Chisholm is unique and serves a story like this so well. This team has a hit on their hands and I can’t wait to see more and hear your thoughts as the reader!
