The Story

Kwannon has been captured by the villain she has been seeking out, the Taxonomist, or Ty Haniver. Ty has her displayed like one of his butterflies, needles into limbs and all. While she’s pinned down, she has no access to her psionic powers as it seems she’s been administered some kind of poison. Ty is treating her as one of his science experiments and it can only end badly unless Kwannon is able to escape.

Ty’s plan is to put her on display in his creepy museum, and already has a display ready for Kwannon to be added to. Ty has tried everything he can to learn all about Kwannon’s life as Psylocke, but he wants to know so much more about her. With his monologuing ways, we found out Ty’s actual backstory and see where his creepy obsession with experiments came from. It makes sense in a dark and twisted way. His life experiences has led him to be someone that mutilates creatures and puts the finished projects on display, which is exactly what he plans to do with Kwannon.

The Writing

So much happened in Psylocke #5, and still set up for a lot more to come. Seeing Kwannon take on Ty, who’s put her in the absolute worst position, in such an emotional way was really exciting to see. Especially when it involved so many past moments of Kwannon’s life.

I really enjoyed the backstory of Ty, and being shown what all led to him becoming the scientist he is, who’s only interested in destroying and rebuilding. He is certainly a memorable character that did a great job at being creepy. Alyssa Wong continues to impress with writing a story with so much depth, while packing on the action that comes with a ninja character like Psylocke. I’m excited to see what comes next, especially after that cliffhanger we’re left on.

The Art

Vincenzo Carratú, Moisés Hidalgo, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and Ariana Maher really go out of their way to make each panel impactful and full of depth. Carratú and Hidalgo draw some pretty fantastic panels through the comic, but the pages with the most action really stand out. With Sifuentes-Sujo on colors, you cannot go wrong, and that shows very well in Psylocke #5. Of course, Maher always brings so much to the table, but in Psylocke #5, I think she really nailed the multiple tones throughout the comic. With this team of artists, you have a powerhouse of talent that can do no wrong.

Overall Grade – 9/10
