“Magik’s hunt for the Liminal Seals takes her and Cal deep into the Tokyo underground. But who is watching Illyana from backstage? And has Cal teamed up with Earth’s best chance against the demon invasion or its prophesied leader?”(Credit: Marvel)
The Story
Magik has found herself right in the middle of a mystery that includes demons setting out to kill mutants. Why they’re doing this, she doesn’t know, but Magik’s mind is set on finding out why. Joining her is Cal, who is a descendant in a long line of mages who have devoted themselves to keeping Liminal. Speaking of Liminal, Liminal is a demonic entity that’s only being held back from wreaking havoc on the world by four seals. It was once five seals but in Magik #1, one of the seals have been broken. Now Magik and Cal are now on a journey to find the other four seals before they’re broken too.
Tokyo
Their journey starts in Tokyo, where Magik has brought them to a cat cafe to research where the next seal could be. Cal wants to do whatever he can to find the seal, as his grandmother trusted him with this mission, but Magik doesn’t want him to put himself in an unsafe situation. He doesn’t know what he’s up against, and Magik says his grandmother would want him to be safe. Cal is reminiscing about his grandmother when the waitress approaches asking Magik if she would accompany her to a concert later. Magik declined the invitation, but then the waitress mentions the disappearances in the area and her mind is changed instantly.
A couple hours later, the trio is at the concert and they immediately get to work on looking for that seal. Magik tries to use her powers, but something is blocking her from being able to. Just as Magik questions it, the show is starting and on stage is Ren, the girl who was killed by Liminal’s demons. It seems Magik and Cal are indeed on the right track for the seal.
The Writing
Ashley Allen had such a strong start with Magik #1, and she continues that with the second installment. There’s a lot to like about Magik #2, but I think my favorite thing is that it feels so authentic to the character and her backstory. The story itself is dark and plagued with mystery and Allen has written it flawlessly. Adding in new characters along with Magik’s established lore, Allen keeps the story flowing while keeping you on the edge of your seat.
I really like the friendship forming in between Cal and Magik, as they both need each other more than they realize. Cal seems to be inching closer and closer to trusting Magik, while she seems like she’s understanding him a little bit more.
The Art
The artists of Magik #2 perfectly matched the tone of the story with their art, and even adding more depth to the storyline. Germán Peralta does a fantastic at making the comic send a chill down your spine at some points, such as when we get a good look at Ren at the concert. Perlata makes the demons appropriately creepy, while also making them fit the tone of the story. Arthur Hesli, who handled the colors, added the perfect stunning colors to each panel, making every scene at the concert absolutely eye catching. With the bright red backgrounds juxtaposing the cool toned demons, each page stood out in the best way.
Overall grade – 9.1/10
