“THE BLACK CAT STRIKES! Felicia Hardy has set her sights on the treasure trove of magical items that Scarlet Witch keeps in the basement of her witchcraft shop. But has this crafty cat bitten off more than she can chew? And what will happen when Wanda’s ambitious apprentice Amaranth is drawn to a magical item that she’s not ready to handle yet?” (Credit- Marvel)
The Story
Wanda is resting peacefully in her bed when her magic intruder alarm goes off, signalling her vault has been breached. Inside the vault are some of the most magical artifacts in the universe, and in the wrong hands, could destroy reality as a whole. With so many conjurings and protection spells keeping the vault safe, who could it have been that was able to break in? None other than Black Cat herself, Felicia Hardy.
Felicia has her eyes set on the Eye-Spy Cauldron, which allows for supernatural surveillance, but Wanda won’t just let her leave with it. Wanda tries to stop her using a hex, but using magic in a place with so much magic in the air will have unpredictable results. No matter what Wanda does, it seems to backfire onto her. Amaranth, her protégé, seems to only make matters worse when she magically looks Felicia in eye, which drives to be unhinged and out of her right mind. The witches have more than one problem on their hands, and Felicia seems to be making more for them.
The Writing
Steve Orlando has done some really great things with this Scarlet Witch run, and this is so exception. Involving Felicia Hardy in this run was inspired, as she’s really the only cat burglar who would be able to penetrate Wanda’s magical borders. What I really enjoy is learning more about the magical artifacts in Wanda’s vault, and it feels like Orlando is really flexing his knowledge here.
Amaranth is a character I can’t wrap my head around, and I’m excited to learn more about her. She has a mysterious energy all around her, so I’m sure finding out more will be a chaotic thrill ride.
The Art
The artists on Scarlet Witch have consistently delivered standout artwork with every issue, and the continue that trend in Scarlet Witch #9. In this issue, we get some really great looks at Black Cat’s fighting styles that really show how skilled she is outside of cat burgling. The artists also did a great job at showing the magical artifacts and their power once they’re affected by Felicia and her unhinged ways.
As I said before, the artists have done such a phenomenal job in this run, and I can’t wait to see that continue.
Overall Score – 9.2/10
