THE BROOD – The First Family of Supervillainy

As issue #2 of ‘The Brood’ kicks off, we just keep diving deeper into the world of Minor Threats. We’ve met heroes that don’t seem so great, and villains that don’t seem so bad. However, in The Brood, we have a supervillain, his family, and the one obstacle no one has ever been able to avoid: death.

The Story for Issue 2

Last we saw the supervillain, Napoleon Archimedes, we learned he’s not winning any ‘World’s Best Father’ mugs, and he’s dying. While terrible parenting, and the patriarch’s impending doom, continue to be the overall story, issue 2 focused on his only daughter, Agatha. She claims to be smarter than her father, and throughout this issue she attempts to prove her worth. Something she’s never been truly able to do in the eyes of her parents.

Agatha takes us from her childhood to present day, and gives us so much more insight on her supervillain super-toxic family. Additionally she shows us a lot more about the world of Minor Threats, as we dive further into the origin of a character, of someone who seems to be the Minor Threats’ ‘Where’s Waldo.’

The Art

Not only is the world of Minor Threats incredibly entertaining, it’s been absolutely beautiful to look at as well. With each story having a different artist, we get different feels, yet the art still maintains a consistency to it. I always know what world I’m in. In issue 2 we get a few views of Meteor Falls, that are so incredibly detailed, and beautiful, that they had me pausing just to take it all in.

Overall Grade: 9.75/10

I truly cannot get enough of this world. The first issue of The Brood got me hooked right away, however, issue 2 made me fall in love with it. Seeing this specific story from a different perspective, coupled with some overall origin, just completely sucked me in.

The first 4 issues of Minor Threats set the bar incredibly high in regards to storytelling, and the art. Every spinoff since then has seemed to have no problem meeting that bar, and making the world that much better. Whether you’ve read everything in this world, or nothing, I cannot recommend The Brood enough. I have to give it 9.75 out of 10 meteors.
