The Story for Issue #1
This debut issue of THE BROOD kicks right off with our newest villain’s origin story. Born Stanley Tyler, he instantly embraced his evil roots as the “greatest criminal mind the world has even known.” However, Stanley, also known as, Napoleon Archimedes is more than meets the eye. While issue one introduces us to him and his family, his true level of evilness is yet to be determined. However, all the money, family, and intelligence in the world can’t save you from the one obstacle no one has been able to ever outrun… death.
The Art
This is the fifth 4 issue run in this fantastically dark, fun, and mysterious world created by Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum (Minor Threats, The Alternates, Minor Threats: The Fastest Way Down, Barfly, THE BROOD). While the stories are all connected, they all stand out individually as well. The art is one of the many ways they’ve been able to accomplish this so beautifully. In THE BROOD we’re seeing this world in almost classic comic book form with a few “POW” type scenes. All the while the art also showcases beautiful backdrops, amazing background details, and most importantly, successfully captures the mood of each scene.
The BROOD #1 Rating: 9/10
While each 4 issue run has been enjoyable completely on its own, there has been a character that keeps popping in and out. A character who I’m really not quite sure of yet. The Brood looks as if we just might get a bit more background, and possibly more dots connected in this ever growing new world.
I can’t get enough of this Minor Threats world, and this first issue of THE BROOD just made me want even more. I’m absolutely loving the non subtleness of terrible parenting coupled with super powers and magic. Whether or not you’ve suffered from a terrible parent, you should absolutely add THE BROOD to your pull list. It only seems to get better as we dive further into the world of Minor Threats.
